Located up in a small but beautiful mountains of Lepanto, the resort is very nice, grounds are spacious, green surroundings, clean and well maintained gardens, quite an peaceful place like heaven! Though we need to travel about 13 minutes by motorbike from the National road but its all worth it. My first time to come in this place and would love to come back over and over again. One of the best place to relax.

Recently I traveled to the island of Cebu, Philippines.

Cebu with the Philippines is one of the upcoming tourist destinations in Asia. I assume as this is, in comparison to Thailand or Malaysia, pretty untapped.

Being in Asia, the island has a number of beach holidaying destinations. On this occasion I visited a place that sang a different tune. A mountain resort. Usually you hear about mountain resorts in the snowy mountains of Europe so I was intrigued to find out what it was all about.

Sun Xi Resort, a very new establishment, claim to be at 2,200 ft above sea level.

They are situated in the quiet “Barangay” (village) Lepanto, which is part of the municipal Alegria.

Upon arriving at Cebu, Mactan airport. I was met by the Sun Xi Resort driver, who took my bags and put them in the back of their pickup truck, and I got in the cabin with the driver. I must say , this was not your standard shuttle bus to a hotel one maybe used too. Still to me, it added to the general character of Sun Xi.

The drive took about 3 hours and even though it was dark, It was interesting to see us getting more and more rural, till eventually we kicked in the four wheel drive, and started ascending the mountain.

When finally there, I had to climb up a tiring 128 stairs where the resort was finally waiting.

The entrance is a little left to be desired, but once inside the gates, the landscaping and view was truly quite breath taking.

I met with the young manager Tim, whose father is the main investor/
owner of the property. He explained to me the concept was a getaway for the white collar expats living in Asia to escape to for the weekend or longer.

The general atmosphere of the place is very casual. You feel like you are more staying as a guest of a house, as opposed to the usual, room service, front of house, restaurant etc. That being said, there is still housekeeping, a bar and dining area where simple foods were cooked, which all gets charged to the account.

It was a bit weird to get used to the fact that I couldn't readily use my mobile phone whenever I wanted. I was informed that there are only certain spots around the estate which have signal. I questioned as to whether that affects business or not. However, Sun Xi's marketing, is all about, total recluse, the “throw away your phones, burn the laptops” culture, and I see how it works for them.

A good place to come for honeymoons/romantic get aways. Catching up on a lot of reading/ self time. Stargazing (beautiful) hiking on natural paths. Generally to get back to basics.

A must visit, if you really do want to get out of the cities but still feel at home.

Still very new, so a few hiccups, but will be interesting to see how they develop.

Response from Sunxi, General Manager at Sun Xi Mountain Retreat
Responded Nov 2, 2012
Dear clintoneoconey, just wanted to say a big thank-you for your support of Sun Xi Resort and for the pioneering visit and stay you and your friends made back in April 2008. Wow, almost 5 years ago. It would be great if you can make a trip next April as we have a few developments which we will be officially launching and would like to share with you. Quite a lot has changed over the past 4 years, but also a lot is still the same - as it has been for the last 400 years, or more even. The scenery, atmosphere and magic will hopefully never change. Thanks again for your visit and the review. Look forward to welcoming you back soon.

beautiful and peaceful place......good place A break from the standard seaside resort, Sun Xi is a breath of fresh air, situated on a mountain, you immediately get swept away with it's breath taking views when you arrive. This family run resort welcomes you into their cosy nook with friendly staff and even a couple of dogs for company. The chalets are rustic. Sun Xi lets you get back to nature and turn off the tech. Walks around the area will bring you towards enchanting paddy fields and charming village folk. My wonderful three nights stay ended up in the management naming a cute little puppy

Sun Xi resort is a very unique place amongst the many resorts at one's disposal in Cebu. I went to Cebu on a week long mini-tour of the visayas, have been back many times since, but Sun Xi remains the benchmark for one of the island's few mountain getaways.

The room we stayed in was very clean and tidy with a fan provided (no aircon necessary! The air is so cool!). The staff were friendly and ready in case we needed their help to organise activities, order food, etc. I would recommend it for a weekend escape from the city/technology.

The mountain top resort has a sister establishment(Xi Shack bar) in town by the coast so seaside beers are never too far away. To get there, you will have to use your own transport or ask the staff to arrange it for you.

I will definitely go back to use it as my base when visiting surrounding areas in Southern Cebu.

My stay at Sun Xi Resort was a lovely breath of fresh air. As someone who enjoys the opportunity to switch off all technology and read a book, I found Sun Xi Resort to be the prefect retreat for that kind of holiday. Being on a mountain, It's also a nice change of scenery to all the countless beach resorts you find in Cebu. However, a quick drive down the mountain to Xi Shack (their bar by the sea) is a good for a quick fix of seaside air.

Unfortunately a few chalets were still under construction during our stay but it hardly interfered with our stay. They staff were very friendly and helpful with anything we needed.

I would recommend this resort to anyone looking for something unique, serene and quiet. Oh and dog lovers would love it as the owners have a couple of doggies running around!

The first time I travelled to Cebu with friends....the excitement to see this place urged us to overcome the so tiring 3-hour ride towards the South. The breathtaking zigzag road gave it more an intriguing foresight of what's instore along the way going up as you spot a lighted area at the topmost part of the mountain ranges. A few minutes more as we parked down the grounds, we set our feet to grasp the only way up......more than 100 steps! Smiles went painted on our faces as we saw the bamboo gate with the sign Sun Xi Resort....and when it opened....walking a few more steps....we were greeted by a cool, awesome, tranquil abode with the stars almost at our reach. It was an unforgettable golden day for me since then....and had to go back second and third time around, August of this year, bringing other friends to experience the magic of this cozy resort for themselves. Surprisingly, each year has its own new eye-popping added features....and this year....a welcoming villa where 6 casitas await guests to slumber and have some peaceful stay away from the fast pacing world in the cities in a warm ambience and services given by trained staffs. So, what are you waiting for? It's your chance of a lifetime!

Stayed for two nights. I was greeted by some of the warmest people I have met while traveling. I spent the first part of my day just enjoying the view of Tanyon Strait. It was the most fulfilling lazy day I've had. Then in the afternoon I went out to ride my mountain bike (which I rarely travel without).

The air is thinner because of the altitude but I was so fresh I wish I could take home some of them. Got some awesome trails that I wish I've mapped. The next day I got one guy who works there to take me to a nearby waterfall.

The trek requires some level of fitness but the falls were all worth the walk. The day after I got another guy to take me to Mt. Lanaya. Held my breath watching the view, the only thing I could have asked for was some beer and all my close friends to join me.

Haven't been to their beach yet but they got good photos on Facebook. Want to check it out soon.

We booked this hotel on Agoda.com, but the place was actually closed for the season and under a significant amount of renovation construction (the rooms were not under construction, just the rest of the property). The location, with vast views of the Cebu mountains, is stunning, but a lot of work needs to be done to get it ready for guests again - staff seemed unaware of how to handle guests, I think because the place was supposed to be closed. We were indeed the only guests there, which made for a fairly creepy experience the first night, and they were definitely not prepared for us other than having a bed made (no food, drinks, etc). So mainly the fault of Agoda for letting us book there. Once they get back open, with capable staff, I can see this being a great place to stay. If you're looking to book, check through AirBnB, so you can communicate directly with the owner. Three stars are for the owner of the property, who was our saving grace and was incredibly kind to us and generous.

Paul M asked a question Dec 2017
How accessible is it to diving?
Answer from Sunxi
Hi Paul, we are about 20 minutes from the coast in Alegria main town Poblacion. The nearest diving in MoalBoal is a further 30 minutes away
