Palo Alto is only 15 minutes away from Palawan Airport and 5 minutes away from BM Beach and the soon-to-be-opened Robinsons' Shopping Complex. Palo Alto Bed & Breakfast consists of mostly wooden structures combined with other materials, such as Capiz shells and Abaca fiber, designed to aesthetically enhance the beauty of wood. It nestles harmoniously with Palawan's natural surroundings of lush tropical greeneries and tranquility.

Our family stayed here for a couple of nights. We enjoyed the timber design and way the buildings incorporated trees and were generally built around the landscape. They were doing some maintenance work and there were not many guests when we were there so it was a bit lacking in atmosphere. The pool was nice. The wifi didn't work in our room which was a major drawback for teenage daughters. The location is not close to the shops, beach or attractions but they have a free night time shuttle to restaurants.

First of all, outstanding service. The staff were very friendly and helpful in terms of arranging trips, renting scooter etc. Breakfast is decent, not amazing. Room wasn’t cleaned daily and our drain was blocked (also after notifying staff who said it would be fixed). Over all though, we enjoyed our stay. Will especially recommend for short stays.

I liked the room and the atmosphere of this hotel. The quiet courtyard gives you a special feeling of calm. Breakfast was adequate, about all you can hope for. The room had a good hot shower although the layout was to me quite bizarre. While spacious, you practically tripped over the toilet to enter. If that is the worst thing, then the place was pretty good!

This hotel is ok for the price. The wooden look is cool but it's getting a bit rundown and tired. I think they were doing some maintenance when we were there. The rooms are mostly clean and tidy and very spacious. The bed sheets are a bit thin so could see old stains on the matress protector underneath. The rooms only have box aircons but at least they drown out any other noise. The rooms are very bright at night if you leave the light on outside, we only realised the second night that we could turn it off from outside haha. The breakfast was ok but they have that sweet bread.

The staff were all very friendly and helpful. I emailed ahead of our trip and they helped pre-book the underground cave tour for us. They also had a free airport shuttle which was handy.

Although within a fifteen minutes away from the city center of Puerto Princesa, the Palo Alto Bed and Breakfast is located in a rural setting in the San Pedro sub-division, surrounded by serene greenery. The establishment is set in its own not very large compound with about 20 rooms, and once inside gives the feeling of being away from civilization, good for those seeking complete relaxation, away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. The logs for the completely wooden construction (cabin style and a perhaps a bit quirky) are apparently from sustainable Acacia Mangium plantations. The B&B has been in operation for only about six for six months.

The rooms are cozy and come in standard, double deluxe and family deluxe categories. The latter are two level lofts and very suitable for a family with children. The beds, linen and the like are adequate. However, the rooms become secondary here- the plenty of common open spaces, including the dining area and the inside and outside decks (on various levels) tempts one to spend most of the time outside.

The strongest assets of the establishment must be the staff and the meals. A small but dedicated group of “youngsters” look after all your needs, within and outside the compound- from organizing meals to various tours and the like, always with a smile. Breakfast is very simple, and although the menu selection for the other meals is limited (and must be ordered in advance), the food is fresh, of excellent quality and reasonably priced. This is because no stock is held in the kitchen- the shopping is done at the local market separately for lunch and dinner once the orders have been received. The seafood items (calamari, prawns, fish) are a ‘must try’ for anyone with a love for the same. A treat for us was having a ‘private’ dinner on the open deck set like a lookout at the tree top level. In short, Palo Alto is a place for people who want to get away from the daily grind and be pampered, but in a non-ostentatious manner.

we stayed in palo alto from march 15 up to march 26.
Service is perfect, airport transfer service, all private van tours were best arranged.
All the people in there are very friendly and are taking care in their best.
All our wishes in there came true.
The rooms are clean and big enough, we chosed family room. The place is quiet, only animal sounds you can hear. In 7 minutes you can reach Robinson, in 10 minutes the center by tricycle.
Our short trip to El Nido was also well organized by the very helpful front desk young lady.
THank you very much for all your help, you let us feel warmth and friendship!

My friends and I stayed at Palo Alto last year and we were very disappointed. As any traveller we viewed the reviews on tripadvisor and found that Palo Alto has good reviews so we decided to give it a try. Like I said we were disappointed. The place is so far away from the city, the location going to the hotel from the airport is horrible. At night we were scared to go out as most of the tricycle drivers did not know where the hotel is. We were charged extra fare because the tricycle had difficulty finding the place.
Also the rooms were tiny, the walls were so thin you can here people talking and around specially at night.
The place had great staff, all in all place is ok but would not stay again due to being so far away.

Response from ylayapauline, Public Relations Manager at Palo Alto Bed & Breakfast

We wanted to comment on you contribution about Palo Alto Bed & Breakfast earlier but could not decide on we should since there was no way to confirm if you have been our guest because of your blank profile. A picture or the usual basic information about you would have been much appreciated. Anyway, here are the major points we would like address regarding your review (in your own words): 1. "So far away from the city..." - Palo Alto is located in Puerto Princesa City. We are in the city and infact only 15 minutes away from the airport which is located in the commercial strip known as Rizal Avenue. 2. "The location going to the hotel from the airport is horrible.." - First of all, Palo Alto BED & BREAKFAST as the name suggests in not a hotel. Secondly, the actual time it takes from the airport to our place is as follows: 13 Minutes from the airport (Rizal Avenue) to Palo Alto Bed & Breakfast via concrete roads knows as the National HIGHWAY. 2 Minutes from the National Highways to Libis Road via a paved gravel road which is currently being converted to a concrete road by the government. 3. "At night we were scared to go out.." - (a) Upon check-in all our guests are informed (verbally and by a posted notice at the lobby) that we provide free shuttle services at night, to the restaurant of their choice and during the dat, to the National Highway (Shell Gas Station). We also provide our guests with a location map and our celphone number. (b) Aside from the fact that Puerto Princesa is one of the most peaceful cities in the Philippines, Palo Alto is surrounded by an entire neighborhood of friendly people. (c) There are many directionals leading to Palo Alto posted along Libis Road so that tricycle drivers don't miss the turns. Majority of our guests (Filipinos, Europeans and Americans) choose to go out at night for the firefly watching tour, to have dinner downtown, to go bar hopping and other nightlife activities at the city center. They had no qualms about going out and exploring on their own. (d) As a guest of Palo Alto, one would have observed the 24-hour security guards and the security cameras installed inside out property to ensure the safety of all our guests. 4. "The hotel rooms are very tiny..." - As earlier mentioned, we are not a hotel and so, though we have smaller rooms compared to hotels, they are very comfortable and fully equipped with hotel amenities. While our deluxe rooms are good for only 2 persons, our family lofts can accommodate four (4) to six (6) people depending on one's budget. And finally, we would like to thank you for recognizing that we have a "great staff" and that overall our place is "okay". As always, we will continue to strive for excellence. God Bless!

Three of my friends and I went for an adventure in Palawan from October 21 to 25, 2011. We chose to book our accommodation with Palo Alto Bed & Breakfast and looking back we could say that we made the right choice.

Palo Alto is located just 15 minutes away from the Puerto Princesa Airport. It is located in the city but once you get there you would feel like you are far from the city because you are in the midst of pure nature, lots of green, fresh air, and the place itself is all made of wood. Another good advantage of the location is that it is not along the main road; you can definitely avoid the noisy street and have a good and relaxing sleep.

Our room is spacious, tidy and clean and equipped with a remote controlled air-condition, an LCD TV, a mini refrigerator, a safety deposit box, wi-fi access, and there are also quite a number of outlets available for charging our gadgets :). The white walls, pin lights, nice curtains make the room very cozy. We all had a good sleep with the very comfortable bed, white bed sheet, blanket and fluffy pillow. The bathroom is nice with hot and cold shower and there is even a bidet sprayer which is very important for the ladies. The place is also energy cost-effective being partly solar powered.

The breakfast was good, we had an ample serving of freshly made bread, jellies, butter, fresh fruits and coffee. I am a coffee drinker but I would just like to suggest that chocolate drink or juice be available for non-coffee drinkers.

I thought that we were just booking an accommodation, I never thought the Palo Alto would also take care of the tours/activities we chose to have at Palawan. They packaged the tours for us at Puerto Princesa as well as at El Nido which is great and less stress for us. The people that Palo Alto got to service the tours are very professional and courteous. We are satisfied with the services and treatment we got.

I would say that the services of Palo Alto really delighted us. The staff would call our room to remind us that breakfast is ready, the time of our next activity, the time of pick-up and the like. It was also nice of them to suggest the good places where we could have our dinner and also took care of booking the reservations for us. Transportation in going to and from the restaurant was even provided by Palo Alto.

We had a hassle free check-out because the statement of account was readily available when we asked for it the on our last night.

Overall, it was a great and personalized experience at Palo Alto. You get what you pay for and more.

The place is also good for team building activities, for seminars, and for company planning sessions. We were informed that the swimming pools will be operational by summer of 2012.

We'll give our highest recommendations about Palo Alto Bed & Breakfast to our family, relatives and friends.

Keep it up Palo Alto Bed & Breakfast. We'll definitely consider you again when we go back to Palawan.

Thanks to the owners Guido and Lalaine Ylaya for making our first time in Palawan a grand time.

Those were the exact words of my 8-year old girl, Rapha, as we were preparing to leave after 4 days, and 3 nights in Palo Alto Bed & Breakfast. The whole family just got home today, and we have taken home with us precious memories of this beautiful place.

I would have to say that this is the place to stay when you are in Puerto Princesa. It lives up to the name of PP as a city within a forest. Palo Alto is a resort-hotel within a forest! It is predominantly made of wood that it gives the traveler such a respite from the usual concrete rooms. After a long, long time, we just relished being on our feet while walking around the resort!

How have we been delighted? Let me count the ways:

1. The ready smile of Jerome, the driver, as he fetched us from the airport. Instantly, he gave us an impromptu guided city tour -- on our way to Palo Alto, some 15 minutes away from the airport. He surely knows the city!

2. The warm welcome of Debbie, from the front desk, who just made us feel like coming home. My wife and I have been to countless hotels, big and small, here and abroad, but the people of Palo Alto personify warm welcome!

3. The good food of Melissa - who cooked for us our requested food. My wife and she just agreed on our menu for the next few nights, and hot dinner was what awaited us every end of the day! I recommend her crab recipe, and adobo. Warning to calorie counters, your diet will be utterly messed up!

4. The lovely room! We had the family room as our three kiddos were with us, and so the loft belonged to them! Riot! Marvin (one of the staff) pampered us with the extra pillows that we requested, and we enjoyed deep sleeps...

5. Aiza, and Grace (their second shift staff) were just equally good, and warm to us!

6. The TREES! Coming from toxic Manila, this for me is the greatest treat, to just have a mega dose of pure oxygen! This is what would be missing from downtown hotels I should say.

7. View decks, and plenty of space for quiet reflection.. with good wifi to boot! I couldn't resist emailing back some business inquiries, so to be in the forest, with a good internet was just perfect for me!

8. Just the ambience of wood, trees, geckos, birds, free space, sans the sounds of jeepneys, or tricycles.... yet be a stone's throw away from the busy city, was just a great set-up for us. My wife and I even went to the local wet market to get some stuff.

I could go on and on... but as we checked out this morning, my wife and I were led to pray for the staff as our way of thanksgiving, and I just heard myself saying: THE BEAUTY OF THIS PLACE IS IN THE PEOPLE THAT KEEP IT...

We truly meant that.

And so as my 8-year old Rapha quipped "I will surely miss this place", she followed it up with a good question: "Pops, when will be back here?"...I confidently muttered: "Soon my love.. soon!"

The hotel is built in a native style. It is beautifully done with natural wood, open air multi level spaces including a restaurant, an upper rest area, and a central courtyard. An oasis away from the hustle and noise of Puerto. The rooms are a bit on the small side, but they are nicely done and more of a typical modern hotel style instead of native style. Air Con is comfortable and has nice flat screen tv. It was treat to come back to from El Nido which has occasional electricity and no hot showers. The only real complaint that I would have is the location. It is tucked away at a bit of a distance from town. Getting back and forth to and from town was a bit of a hassle. None of the tricycle drivers know the property and we got lost one night for 20 minutes trying to find the place. The roads are also really bad for the tricycle drivers to get into, especially after a rain. The hotel was accommodating in allowing us to use the hotel van to get to nearby Shell Station which was easy to get tricycle driver from. There is no pool unfortunately, but I was told that there is plans to build one across the road on an empty lot.
