When we checked in, there was not a similar room available with a decent sea-view. The room was tatty and small; it had a double bed and an unnecessary single bed meaning there was very little space at all. The shower trickled...
As we'd been on the road for a while, we tried the Wifi and that was very intermitent.
There seemed to be a plethora of staff - all lounging around in the 'public areas' glued to the television - it was like they would draw lots when a customer needed to be seen!
After check-in, we walked past another similarly priced hotel; asked to see a room and immediately returned here to check-out.
Shame because it's in a great location but it was a great idea moving so soon!
In all fairness, there are some good things there, but the negatives simply "outshone" these and after two nights, we shifted over to Taiyo cottages (which was far better) for the remainder of the stay.
Negatives -
1) They insisted on an advance payment even though we were coming after just 2 days. We had to run helter skelter for this. Finally they picked up our payment only on the day of our arrival in El Nido! So what was the need??
2) The beachfront cottage was the only one with air con. The other one with air con was located in a concrete building. The air con was ineffective so we had to ask for a fan (which they were good enough to quickly supply)
3) The resort does not have a generator. Electricity is only from 2 pm to 6 am. Hence it was stuffy! Have they not heard of generators or solar power?? Especially when they charge 2500 pesos per night?
4) The door to the beach was broken and kept locked. Hence despite having a beach facing room, we always had to walk around the resort just to step on the beach! What was the point then of having a beach front room and a resort next to the beach??
5) The CR was not clean. It showed definite signs of aging.
6) The water pressure was pathetic. Everytime our neighbouring cottage had a bat / flushed their WC, water would stop in our bath room and vice versa. Our neighbour actually had the audacity to ask us if we could stop using the bathroom as they wanted to have a shower after their island hopping trip. I politely told him to stuff himself.
7) There was no room cleaning service for the 3 days we stayed there. Did we have to tell them if we wanted our room to be cleaned? If so, they never informed us of that!
8) Our dishes from a drink that we had on day 1 remained on our porch till we checked out. No one bothered to take a round around the resort / clean up things.
9) The restaurant is stuffy - despite being open air and with a fan.
In all fairness, somethings were good... sadly not good enough to keep us staying...
1) The garden was well tended - I would have stayed in a garden facing room if only it had an air con.
2) They had a calachuchi tree with lots of flowers - whose aroma was absolutely intoxicating. you could smell it all around the resort
3) The free breakfast was good
4) The view from the restaurant upstairs is good - a little sea, a lot of trees and greenery
We moved out.
My advice : There are only 2-3 places along El Nido town proper beach front which are worth staying at - these are the star places. It is far better to stay along Caalan beach. Taiyo cottage is excellent. Hippo campe is good, but secluded. Caalan resort is very good, but pricey.
Breakfast was not great either and the girl at the front desk who checked us in - not even sure she worked there, seemed like she was just helping out? - was no help about day trips and tours.
I really don't like to complain but this time I felt I had to say something, at least to warn you guys here.
This place is in serious need of someone in charge who can take action when there are problems and give helpful advice when asked about the local area!! We asked for a refund at the end because this was obviously not what we paid for, but of course they only referred us to their regional office in Manila with our request. Let's see...
We went in 2 tours with them around the islands, the 1st one was good, however, the 2nd one the boat broke and we spent 4h in high sea at some point some local fisherman helped us and we went to shore. After speaking with the reception they rejected any kind of responsibilities.
Bottom line, Awful reception staff, awful hotel.
A special thanks to Jake.
It is in a good location and the grounds are nicely designed but it is suffering from poor management.
The two receptionists deserve a special mention. Imagine if you will the most demotivated, miserable character you could hope to meet. Double it, and you have the "Lally & Abet front of house team".
They perform their daily "how not to run a reception" shows from 07:00 until 21:00. Entrance is free.
Customer requests seemed to be ignored, or carried out under sufferance and one word answers were the norm.
One poor couple came in asking politely whether they had availability.
"No" came the unhelpful monosyllabic answer, without barely looking up.
I could imagine them wearing "Happy to hinder" name badges.
Wifi looked promising to start with , with four to choose from, but two didn't work (so switch them off!) and the other two were so slow that they were next to useless. If you're looking for a place with reliable wifi, don't stay here.
The room wasn't serviced once in our four night stay. The bin was overflowing by the end and the rough towels smelt of sweat and linen felt like it was from the 1960s
Breakfast was slow (25mins) which, given almost all options were made up of a combination of about 7 different ingredients, seemed inefficient.
This place has potential. Fix the wifi, give the staff some hospitality and motivational training and get some fresh towels and linen and you'd have a reasonable place.
But as it stands, it thoroughly deserved it's current 12 out of 12 rating.
It was worthless to discuss, The staff is incompetent and there is no manager on site to help you.
As we also had breakfast included and this new place didn't even had a restaurant, they sent a van everyday at 8:00 to take us to have breakfast. The breakfast itself wasn't easy either. We always had to wait +/- 45 minutes to be served. One day I asked for water instead of the coffee and they charged me for that because it wasn't included in the breakfast menu.
Well, I cannot go on because it will be too much to read, because problems never stopped. Staff needs serious training in hospitality and f&b.
If you decide to book this I wish you good luck. It has a huge potential and I hope it gets better quickly.
Avoid this place at all costs.
