Showed up just before the Lockdown and quite frankly couldn’t have landed in a better spot. Spent my first 5 nights at the dive shop resort on the water. It’s not hard to realize why this dive resort gets consistent high ratings, quality and care all the way. After the diving shut down, I moved up to the main hotel and once again, I couldn’t have made a better choice. Spent most of my time during the initial stages of the lockdown by the pool. All meals where 1st class and quite frankly, I didn’t need to leave the resort as I was very comfortable with an awesome friendly staff. From the room to the amenities and staff, I highly recommend this place for your next trip to the Philippines. 😃

Just spent 12 days here rooms are comfortable and were recently renovated nice bathroom. Nice space for meals and the food was very good with a large menu. Even made me some local dishes that were not offered on the menu. So the absolute highlight of this resort is the staff! Kind and so very helpful everyone went above and beyond to make sure our stay was enjoyable. Fantastic value for your money already looking forward to next year.

We walked in and stayed in their dive center located beachfront. The room we had was basic and simple. The staffs and dive instructors are very friendly. Dive course is relatively cheap. They even have a discount promo when you stay with them. We never had a meal with them as the restaurant is located in another branch.

Good day everyone! I’d like to share with you all my unfortunate experience with the Mermaid Resort in Sabang, Puerto Galera. So as not to take up too much time, I’ll give the short version (well, at least I’ll try):

My wife and I were finally able to have a commitment ceremony and reception last June 12th, and our respective families and friends were present to celebrate it with us (we had the civil ceremony some time ago). Of course, after the wedding and reception comes the honeymoon. Rewind back a few months ago to March…

Since we are both divers, we initially wanted to go to Bohol, but due to budget constraints, we decided on Puerto Galera instead. On the tripadvisor.com website, the resort at the top of their list was the Mermaid in Sabang. It received the highest marks on this site due to, among other things, exemplary customer service. After reading the comments posted by satisfied resort guests, we decided that the Mermaid seemed like a great place to have our honeymoon.

In March I started emailing the resort to inquire and make reservations. We were particularly interested in their 7-day package that included the room, diving, meals, even airport transfer and pick-up if we were coming from abroad. According to their website, the price for this package was “7 nights (double occupancy) USD 798/non diver USD 620”. They also offered a 10% discount, and $50 off for non-alcoholic packages, so the final net package rate came down to “7 nights (double occupancy) USD 673.20”. I was told that the given package rate was for two persons, and that to reserve the room I must deposit 30% of the rate ($201, or P10,251 at the time), the sooner the better. In the last week of April, I deposited the money at Western Union as instructed, paying an additional P740 for the transfer fee (which, pardon my ignorance, I was not aware about until during the deposit). I immediately informed Mermaid of the deposit and sent them the control number, then waited for a reply.

Over a week later, I received a phone call from my contact at the resort informing me that she had made a mistake; the rates for the package were PER PERSON and not PER ROOM as was implied by the website information. I then inquired as to what I could expect should I wish to cancel my reservation. I was told that Mermaid would refund the amount I had deposited earlier but they will deduct the Western Union transfer fee from the said amount. In an attempt to salvage what I could from the situation given the circumstances, I suggested that if Mermaid could come up with a package that still catered to both our needs and our budget, then we might still opt to stay at the resort. When they couldn’t, we cancelled and asked for a full refund. I was then told that they wouldn’t cover the transfer fees to and from the resort, so my wife and I stood to lose P1,480 for nothing! I had suggested that they instead deposit the amount at my bank, and they agreed, but they did not follow through with the deposit; neither did they inform me that they had failed to do so (this was the week before our wedding).

It was now June 10th, and my wife (obviously and justifiably stressed enough as it is) took it upon herself to call the resort manager, and after a couple of phone calls was able to wrangle the refund; however, they only sent the deposit fee and not the transfer fee of P740. When we called the resort manager to complain, he said that since Mermaid had to pay the transfer fee to return our money, “patas lang tayo.” We beg to differ: this whole time, my wife and I NEVER made any mistake while making reservations or in the deposit. We did as we were instructed. The only mistake that we did make, it seems, was in choosing the Mermaid in the first place! Since we won’t be gaining from the resort in any way due to the error that THEY had made, it’s only right that we be compensated for every peso we paid and nothing less. Over the phone, we told the manager that since we’ll still be going to PG for our honeymoon (though in Boquete, not in Sabang) we’ll pass by the Mermaid ourselves and collect what’s due us.

Upon arriving at Mermaid resort, my wife and I asked to speak with the girl who (mis)handled our reservation. She said that she was willing to pay for the transfer fee herself, but she had been instructed to call the finance officer and have him talk to us first. Over the phone, the FO basically said (in so many words) that had my wife and I canceled our reservation immediately upon learning that the package rate was per person, we would’ve been entitled to a full refund including the transfer fee. “We made a mistake, we admit that,” he said. However, according to him, since my wife and I decided to look at other possible packages at the Mermaid before canceling, “the refund doesn’t apply anymore, for though we made a mistake, by asking to see other possible packages it means all is forgiven.” He also mentioned several times that he didn’t understand what the basis for our complaint was, again citing that “all was forgiven.” I told him that “if all was forgiven, then we wouldn’t be here talking.”

At some point, he said that in one of my phone calls with the reservation girl, she had offered to cancel the reservation and fully refund our money, a statement that I vehemently opposed. She never mentioned the cancellation until I brought it up, and even then she said that the transfer fees to and from the resort would be covered by my wife and I. Since neither of us was agreeing with the other, the FO invited me and my wife to his Manila office, which took me by surprise. If Mermaid had a Manila office all this time, why had they never mentioned it before or on their website? Moreover, why couldn’t I just deposit the reservation fee there, instead of having to do it via Western Union? I told him that if we couldn’t resolve the issue amicably over the phone, then it would be my lawyer who will be visiting him at his Manila office. His answer was, “Fine. Bring the whole air force if you want!” Upon hearing this, I asked if it was worth ruining the name of his resort for P740, and he replied, “I don’t care.” A few heated words later, my wife motioned that she wanted to speak to the FO herself, and although I thought her words were far more searing than the ones I used, the results were the same. After talking to the FO and hanging up, the reservation girl said she was instructed not to pay us.

We left the resort soon after that, but not before obtaining the names of all the staff involved, including the obnoxious FO. We are currently in the process of filing a complaint with all the pertinent agencies, including the DOT and the Phil. Tourism Authority (of which my father was a founding member).

Some may ask why we’d go through all this trouble for P740. Well, it definitely isn’t just the money; the most important reason is that we hope this kind of thing doesn’t happen to any other couple on their honeymoon. It is also something that shouldn’t happen to any Filipino citizen in his/her own country (the FO was a foreigner; we could tell by his name and accent). Perhaps the FO thought that since he was talking to a young Filipino couple, then whatever threats we throw at him are just full of hot air, since we most likely won’t follow through. Well, he’s in for an unpleasant surprise.

So please tell everyone you know: the Mermaid Resort in Sabang, Puerto Galera is NOT a customer-friendly place, especially if you’re a local. Avoid it like the plague.

Mermaid Resort and Puerto Galera is just place you have to go for a holiday.

It's a really nice medium size town-hotel with really good rooms and services. The owners and staffs are all very nice and friendly and they make you feel at home.

The town it self isn't much to talk about (very small), but the surrounding areas and diving sites is probably one of the best in world.

Taken all in all into account this is just a place you have to go if you have any interest at all in diving, sunbathing and beautiful beaches.

Also been around some of the other hotels in Puerto Galera and Mermaid Resort is without doubt the best.

The Mermaid Resort has beautifully clean rooms. Spacious and simple, yet stylish decor. Nice amenities...DVD players, TVs, bar fridge, good bathrooms.
The exteriors are kept immaculately clean as well...I constantly saw staff sweeping, cleaning, etc. The pool is on the ground floor...almost below ground because you go down a flight of stairs to get there. Very clean, kind of smallish, but there's usually no one in it.
There's really NO view from this hotel...even though the information says there are rooms with a view (I think there's only ONE and the view wouldn't be that great anyhow).
The big downside with this hotel is its location. It is NOT near the beach. It is actually a few blocks away from the beach. There are many other hotels right on the beach if this is important to you (it was to me). If you are going for the beach, the Puerto Galera area is NOT known for beautiful beaches, no matter what you read. Beaches in Thailand are way nicer, or head to Boracay and Palawan in the Philippines. The Puerto Galera area is known for its scuba diving and snorkelling...both are quite fantastic and pretty cheap. However, for beach bums, this is NOT the place to go. There is white sand and blue water, however the beach is quite narrow and virtually disappears during high tide.

Great hotel with good service, clean A/C rooms, and freindly/efficient staff. The rooms have DVD players, cable, refrigerator and HOT water. Two blocks off the beach away from the noise and crowds. Great seafood buffett on Saturdays. Puerta Galara has great diving, not much for beaches. Good nite life and good diving makes for a memorable dive vacation.

I spent 4 days over there in order to dive.

Resort; we were staying in the resort which was very clean, quiet, perfectly situated (near the bank, up the principal street so you avoid all the noise of the discos), the staff is very professional and always available. In a word, perfect. Breakfast in the morning are the good quantity and cost or 200p.

Dive shop; we had around 10 dives in 3 days and were pretty impressed by the quality of the service. The gears are clean and in excellent condition, they also have some different propositions (Nitrox or different compositions). The staff, master divers and guides are all speaking perfect english. In or out the water, they were always aware of us without being too pushy. This allow us to focus on the dives and not on the logistic around each of them.

I will go back and stay in this resort!

We stay one night in Manila at the City State Hotel in Mabini Street Manila as we arrive to late for the last boat at 3.30 pm leaving form Batangas Pier to Sabang. The reason we stay there is because a coach (Travel company called Sea-cat) leaves at 8.30 am for Batangas Pier from the hotel and you can use the booking office within the lobby. Cost is about 1600 pesos return which includes the cost of the boat but not the small Terminal fee of around 100 pesos. Also you have to pay an environmental fee of round 50 pesos on arrival at Sabang. The coach takes about 1.5 hours to the port and the boat trip is about 1 hour to Sabang but well worth the trip. Please note the coach has only one daily departure at 8.30 and the return you have to catch the 9.00 am boat from Sabang in order to get the coach back at 11.00 am. We will be back in March 2017 as love the place and people. Enjoy.
