Detailed Reviews
You can get the private ferry from Berberabe pier south of Batangas to virtually the front door. Room was a massive one bed apartment with private balcony although 70s/80s furniture inside. Nice bar close to beach and tiny swimming pool. Service was typically Filipino - fantastically friendly although a bit haphazard at times to add to the charm. Food was basic and ok - not it's strongest point but with lots of other places around to eat anyway.

The first regret was a 'long' walk to the hotel from the drop-off point. Secondly, the 'beach' is a narrow sandy, stony and rocky shore. During high tide, the water reach right up to the edge of the embankment. If you like diving and looking at carol, this area - Sadang, is good. U can just jum into the water, the the carol is right in front of the hotel.
Exterior the hotel looks presentable. But the rooms are dated!!! Booked a one -room beach facing. HUGE room, but VERY old. Need some refurbishing.
Food was palatable however the prices were way over-priced!
Staff was very friendly and helpful.

I have visited Puerto Galera for vacation several weeks each year for the past 4 years. I have stayed at several of the hotel / lodging /resort facilities there. The one I found to have all I wanted to ensure that I had an enjoyable yet relaxing and trouble free vacation was Portofino Beach Resort located on Small Laguna Beach. It is only a 5-10 minute beach walk to the night life / noise and shopping of the Sabang entertainment district. Portofino Beach Resort has outstanding facilities and customer service that meets Western Standards. It is safe and very clean. It is quiet and relaxing with a small swimming pool and and an excellent beach front view. The in house Chef and bar offered very good food and drinks at competitive prices. A very well established / outstanding diving / snorkeling business is located next door to Portofino BR. I found that package deals to combine Diving / snorkeling activities and lodging at Portofino BR were available. An American expat and his Filipina wife own and manage Portofino. I Highly recommend Portofino Beach Resort !!!

Jim from Arizona, I stayed in November 2006. I completed the PADI open water and advanced crs with Action Divers located next door. Their instructors were great. The hotel staff was very friendly and the food was good, rooms very clean and the pool refreshing. Roger, the owner made it a point to greet each guest.
The resort is located on the water and a 10 minute walk to Sabang, the local entertainment area. The resort can arrange for boating for fishing, and land tours. The view from the outdoor dinning area is very colorful and less busy than Sabang. The beach isn't for sun bathing as the volume of boats keep people
from swimming. Mostly dive groups stayed, they came from Australia, and other international destinations. The value you get for the peso is worth it and I plan to return in 2007. Great people ,great place.

This resort is not what it appears to be. The rooms are run down, musty and unclean. There is not a beach as shown in the brochure or on line pictures and no place available to sunbathe, not even at the pool. The biggest insult was when the manager arranged our transport back to the airport. He assurred us that he would have an eleven passenger van, which would be capable of taking the eight of us and our luggage to the airport, after we paid the extra 300.00 pp over and above the 6000.00 pp. On arriving at the port, we found there is not an 11 passeger van and we had to pay another 3000.00 pp to use two vans. When I telephoned the hotel to ask them about this all I got was the run around. If you are looking for a very nice place to stay for the same price go to the Mermaid Dive Resort, none of were divers but that doesn't matter, it is a great place to stay.

This review is suspicious as its source cannot be verified. The first part of the review has been copied from another review and we responded to its considerable inaccuracies there. The second part has been copied from a private email between myself and a guest over a minor mistake made by the transportation company on their return trip to the airport after they had checked out. What has been left out is that the transportation company owner has accepted responsibility for the confusion, admitted they made a mistake and has offered to refund the additional money that the customer paid but the offer was turned down. The author of the email has also denied posting the review.

Visited Puerto Galera with my family and stayed at Portofino for a week, the resort is in good location, beach front, away from city life noise but still walking distance to pubs and shops. They have a nice swimming pool specially if you got kids, staff are friendly and good service but food menu in their restaurant is a bit pricey compare to nearby restaurants and yeah I think the rooms need a bit of remodelling but overall it is ok to stay. The highlight of our stay was the boys enjoyed their diving adventures and drink lots of San Miguel while the girls enjoyed swimming and shopping at Puerto Galera.

the hotel looks nice at the brochure. but all is manipulated, no white beach in the front. impossible to swim there because the water is not so clean there and there is in fact nearly no beach, the water just ended by the wall from the terrace from the hotel. the rooms are all very old and they need a complet restauration. I booked 5 nights, but cancelled all after 1 night. the room smells so bad and there was mood everywhere. the walls are wet and and this gives the bad smell.the roof lets comming water through in your room. the furniture are very old and all rooms are very dirty and dark. i changed the room after one hour, but the new room has the same problem.
would never stay there again. not good stay for holidays. we moved to tropicana hotel and this was also 20 dollars cheaper and great stay like as a king in a castle.

Responded Nov 11, 2010
Pvboo, we are sorry that you did not like your room but we must respond to several naccuracies in your review. Your statement that the brochure is manipulated is simply untrue. The main picture in the brochure and an updated one on the home page of our website clearly shows the beach and the fact that it is not big. This is true for most of the Sabang waterfront in Puerto Galera although it does vary from place to place. We accept that ours is on the smaller end. It should not have surprised you that at high tide the sea comes all of the way to the seawall. We do not hide this fact and many customers enjoy dining and drinks along the seawall at high tide and people watching at low tide. And the beach is white sand even if it isn't very big. This is a world class diving area and the proximity to the house reef just offshore is part of what makes it so and also contributes to the smallish beaches. We make no apologies for that. The water quality in Small La Laguna where the resort is located has very clean water that people regularly swim, snorkel and dive in. At low tide the tidal pools are attractions for explorers of all ages. The Philippine Department of the Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) as well as major universities have done extensive water quality testing here. Small La Laguna has always met the standards for water safety. The room you were originally booked in is one of our more popular budget rooms and is regularly requested by returning guests. The dampness on the wall was the result of a slowly leaking pipe in a solid concrete wall that was just beginning to leech out and caused some paint to peel. I don't believe that it smelled but that of course is subjective and we respect your opinion. We should have caught this in our pre-arrival room preparation but we regret that we did not. There is no mold in the room. Your comment that the roof was leaking is not true. Had you looked you would have noticed that you were on the second story of a three story building. The "roof" you refer to is actually the floor above and it and the roof above that do not leak. After you complained about the damp wall we gave you a free upgrade to a one bedroom unit. You didn't like that room either which quite frankly was not a surprise. If a guest does not like it here we would willingly help you relocate if you did not find our accomodations acceptable after giving us a chance to correct the problem. You did not ask for help. As far as the rooms being old you are correct. While management and owners are working behind the scenes to plan for a renovation, that does not mean that the rooms are not clean or not serviceable even if they are well used. Not everyone likes older hotels and I suspect that is the case for you. We understand and accept that. If you look on our website you will find recent pictures of nearly all of our rooms. These pictures were intentionally not staged other than turning on the lights so that potential guests can see exactly what the rooms are like since this is an older resort. What you see is what you get. We have never misrepresented the resort and never will.] Again, we are sorry that you did not like your room and wish you had given us more opportunity to resolve your complaint but as the guest that is your choice which we will respect. Stayed there for 2 days and really enjoyed everything. Great food friendly staff and nice loaction. A 10 min stroll from Sabang Pier and directly on the water.....Only set back I could think of is there is no direct beach infront of the hotel, but that the same pretty mach along sabang & Laguna beach........
Met up with their General Manager Chuck and had a pleasant talk. He was very polite and took time to explain the area and gave tips on what to do........Chuck if you read this, thanks for everything. We ended up at the Sandbar as you suggested it and it was amazing......thanks again....
This is the right place to stay in Puerto galera and I certainly will be back at the portofino soon.
