The hotel seems full during this period and yet the manager and front desk are always stationed at their front desk so that u can contact them if you need anything. Best thing is they dont make you wait around for nothing and they seem to be able to manage their guests well.
It's not that far from manila and ms Em will write to you to ask if you need assistance before you arrive. The best thing is the people there really seem like they are nice cos they like having you around so it's really a nice feeling. They would really welcome you and yes the locals are nice as well. Laid back and friendly.
The pool was so clean and warm that my 7 month infant actually played in it for an hour. The view as many before me have said is breathtaking. They even arranged an island hopping trip for us which u paid directly to the boat man and not to them so they dont take any commission from that.
All in all, if you want a place that you can live in relative comfort with all the luxuries like cable tv, flat screens and wifi and yet near to the beach and nature. Do stay here.
Upon arrival at the Muelle Port from Batangas (around 40 minutes of a boat ride), our party of eight boarded three tricycles. We paid 100pesos per trike. With our luggages and the steep road going up the resort, that amount was worth it.
And wow! The mountain-top resort had a breath-taking view of the cove. The well-maintained greenery and clean foyer automatically gave a sense of serenity.
We were greeted by their friendly staff and I particularly appreciated the no fuss check-in (and check-out) process.
The three-bedroom, six-person Oceanview Villa we stayed in was huge! (We also rented another 2-pax room as the resort was very strict with the number of guests.) They didn't scrimp on amenities, though, with television sets in all rooms -including the main living area; A/Cs and fans; a strong wifi connection; hot and cold showers in three full toilets and bathrooms (NOTE: clogging problems in all three shower rooms); a billiards table, a functional kitchen with fridge; and a small office area to boot. Have I mentioned the view? Yeah!!
Kids and adults alike enjoyed the outdoor infinity pool. There's also a recreational room near the main lobby. (I hope they'd consider placing a chess board there.) Fronting our villa was a wide area to play croquet and hopscotch.
Breakfast was served at the spacious, second-floor dining room wherein you had a choice to eat at the verandah with the grand view of the sea. Kudos to the pleasant, attentive and generous (heaps of extra rice!) kitchen staff for the sumptuous meals.
Another fun part was the 10-minute trek along lush foliage to the beach. We then went snorkeling, sunbathing, swimming and a short boatride to the Underwater Cave. We had lunch, prepared by the group of easy-going boatmen, by the sea. Our two elderly parents went back to the hotel riding motorcycles. The hotel pool was a relaxing place to warm down our day-long activities.
We had dinner at the poblacion and also bought food at the town market to be cooked back in our villa.
Our family had a relaxing 3D/2N vacation in Puerto Galera far from the madding crowd, just as we wanted. Tranquility, indeed!
The room is bigger than SUPERIOR but only one small window with POOR VIEW. We don't need space, we paid for the VIEW.
I confirm many times with staff to make sure what room type we were live in, they all said it's a SUPERIOR ROOM. But it looks so different from the reviews and the photos on the internet.
Next day in the morning, I asked another staff who is cleaning the room next to us, he said our room is FAMILY room! And I check the photo, it really is! Only they have moved out two single beds(change to table and small sofa).
So I asked the reception again. First she still said it's a SUPERIOR. But I show her the picture, she finally admit it's a FAMILY ROOM. And it's just next to the cheaper DELUXE ROOM. So the VIEW is very normal, since it's locate on the B1 floor next to the pool. Although the space is bigger and the price is higher, but I DON'T NEED SPACE, I PAY FOR THE VIEW! And the most important point is: BE HONEST TO GUEST! You can just tell me in the first place that all the SUPERIOR ROOM is full, and asked me if I could select the FAMILY ROOM instead.
They offer me a free night, but it's my last day and I have to go. So they just refund me 540p, so that I paid for a DELUXE room.
I will never come back for sure. It isn't about money, it's about HONESTY. We almost spend most of our time here to figure out WHAT ROOM TYPE ARE WE REALLY LIVE IN. Spoiled my last day in Puerto Galera. Sigh.....
Pros:
1. Stunning view from all angles
2. Very nice pool with excellent view
3. Extremely helpful and polite staff especially Marie. The owner Bill is also very nice and friendly.
4. Hotel is well-maintained.
5. Nearby (5 minutes walk) from the hotel is Elizabeth's Hideaway. The pastas there are nice (but maybe a bit pricey to some). The view there is stunning too. If you eat there, you can use their facilities - the beach and the huts. From the Manor, main entrance or the garden entrance, just walk down the hill, instead of turning left to walk to the main road, turn right and follow the road to the beach.
6. Common areas are nice and comfy.
Cons:
1. Despite that there are reviews saying that the food is delicious, it is certainly not. The choices are very limited. They do have to change the menu and include some universal items like pizzas, pastas and etc. Several couples stayed in the Manor during our stay but the restaurant was empty most of the time except morning hours for the free breakfast. The food is very oily and the ingredients are not fresh enough. They should not bother serving seafood. My plan was to stay in the hotel without going outside to have meals throughout the entire time but I had to give up the idea after the first day of breakfast, lunch and dinner there.
2. No wifi in room - since I have read the reviews of others, I bought an internet card in the airport. A 14-day internet access card costs only 550p (7-day card for 350p). It is very reasonable and I didn't have to worry about not having internet access. The speed is a bit slower on the island but still acceptable. Go to the SMART counter outside the arrival area in the airport to get the card.
I would have given 5 stars to this premise but the restaurant is really too poor that I have to take a star away. We needed to go out to have dinner every single night but it was pretty dark at night.
The hotel is truly outstanding. There is no elevator, but an elevator would totally be out of character with the hotel. In any case, outside major cities in the Philippines, there are no elevators in hotels. The stairs are so beautiful and wide and so full of art and artifacts in such wonderful taste, that it is a sheer pleasure to use them.
The rooms have everything you could wish for. The internet access is good and free and with no silly passwords. There’s living room spaces on each floor where you can sit in peace overlooking the wonderful views.
Breakfast is included in the room rate and was very good. The hotel staff are all quite wonderful and genuinely welcoming.
The downside I guess is that you pay for the outstanding views on the hilltop by being a bit out of town. You can’t have the breathtaking views and the peace and tranquility that this hotel offers and be beside the beach.
This hotel is built in a quality hard to find in the Philippines. The owner is American and he has spared no money in building this place. It was a real pleasure to stay here and I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone.
The only saving grace was when they finally agreed to transfer us to a better/cleaner room without a charge (which only happened after we persistently requested despite the rejection). The room we transferred to was spacious and a lot nicer but still not without flaws. Upon waking up the following morning, we found our laptop bag which stored inside the cabinet drenched because there was a leak on the roof of the cabinet. Service was lackluster as well. you have to have a lot of patience waiting for breakfast. So they took our order, did not set expectations about possible delays, only to find out 1 hour and several follow ups after that one of the crew was still in the market to buy the ingredients for our breakfast. Pfft.
If the front desk staff was more clued into the overall tourist infrastructure in the area and the needs of their guests, it would have been great. A few examples: they couldn't fully explain the boat process for getting there (we asked to clarify which port from Batangas - Batangas Port or Berberabe) and they didn't know and asked us to call back; the hotel was not very clean (dirty table in dining area, cockroaches in bathroom); when we asked for leads on booking an island hopping tour couldn't get us a contact until 5pm (6 hours later) - we just booked on our own; told us the way to the beach down the path but didn't mention that it was a private beach where we were definitely not welcomed initially; would only give a 1 hour late check out and seemed to lie to us saying that they were fully booked the next day (sunday night? really? it was empty after we left); didn't think to suggest that one private boat would suffice for our 12 people to get us to Berberabe port so we ended up needlessly paying for two boats; night front desk staff didn't know what sheets were. The staff were all very friendly but just never seemed able to provide the specific information we needed or a complete picture about anything. Thankfully we were a very self-sufficient group that have all been residing in the Philippines for a while and had a few folks with us that had been to Puerto Galera before.
If the front desk staff was more focused on customer service and simply more knowledgable it would have completely changed our experience. It was overall nice, but I would return to other properties I have stayed at in Puerto Galera before returning to The Manor. This was the second stay at The Manor for one member of our group and she was disappointed with this stay. Maybe we just hit it at a bad weekend.
