The plus side: very close to old central Lhasa (Bharkhor Square/ The Jokhang temple) and easy access to restaurants; friendly front of house The down side: needs some renovation eg broken window locks (anyone could break in), safe not secured to wall (though on mentioning we

I have done a great deal of challenging travel in my life, and Shangbala is a relief in a sea of dirty hotels with questionable facilities. The gracious and famous Tibetan hospitality still exists at Shangbala, which can't be said for all the facilities in Lhasa. First, the

"Stayed in a room facing the inner courtyard which was quieter than rooms on the street side."
"Try tom get a room on the upper floors away from the central courtyard, which is noisy until 11 and starts again at 6. Hot water not always available after 8 at night."
"Ask for a room on the courtyard. The rooms adjoining the alley have no soundproofing to speak of and the alley has several active business and apartment dwellings that seem to have activity well inot the night."
"We had a room with a view of the Palace and while there was some street noise I viewed this as part of the charm of the place."
"The rooms off the alley can be quite noisy until around 11:00 p.m. Ask for a room with a view of the parking lot if you require a quieter room."
