Mara Plains Camp is a one-of-a-kind camp located in the private 13,300-hectare Olare Motorogi Conservancy, just on the Maasai Mara National Reserve’s northern boundary. This intimate camp, one of Kenya’s only three Relais & Chateaux properties (other being sister properties ol Donyo Lodge and Mara Nyika Camp), blends the finest in wildlife viewing with the absolute best of safari hospitality and guiding. No other Maasai Mara based camp offers the extensive traversing area of Mara Plains Camp, with access to a total of 40,000 hectares of private conservancy land and the world-renowned Maasai Mara, home to the Great Migration. Each guest at Mara Plains contributes considerably to the success of the Olare Motorogi Conservancy’s flourishing ecosystem; conservation fees paid to safeguard this habitat while supporting over 1,000 Maasai families. This partnership agreement ensures the survival of an astounding volume and variety of wildlife. The camp is nestled in a lush forest on the meandering bends of the Ntiakitiak River, with careful thought given to every detail. The camp is not an imposition on the landscape, but rather a subtle refuge among the wild. Its presence does not detract from the ecosystem’s visual beauty but incorporates it with sweeping views across the plains and careful position among the riverine forest. It is captivating on arrival. Mara Plains Camp opened mid-2021 with five brand new double or twin bed Suites as well as The 2-bedroom Jahazi Suite at Mara Plains, perfect for those families or couples travelling together. Each of the suites has deep canvas canopied ceilings, rough-hewn wood floors and accents of East Africa’s rich safari history. Thick Lamu wood doors, deep reds, and brass accents – these small details transport guests to a time and land far away. The well-appointed en-suite facilities (including a deep copper bath) and extensive private verandah complete what is genuinely a stunning concept. These stylistic elements and thoughtful environmental elements such as solar power and no cement make Mara Plains a modern-day safari retreat. The Olare Motorogi Conservancy is reputed to have the lowest vehicle density in the Maasai Mara region, while also having the highest concentration of big cats anywhere in Africa. The camp is a sanctuary for resident species by day and night, including many of the Maasai Mara’s 300 bird species. After dark, larger mammals frequent the camp and Maasai warriors escort guests to and from their rooms. Hippos snorting and leopards barking often provide the night’s chorus. But most of all, Mara Plains is a showcase for one of the world’s most magnificent wildlife havens. We believe in keeping the safari experience intimate and personal, so there is no set camp schedule or set mealtimes. The guest’s preferences wildlife opportunities of the moment tailor the day’s activities and dining arrangements. Each guest suite has a set of professional camera and lenses available to them. Add to it the pair of high-quality binoculars, and it is impossible not to see and capture the region’s incredible wildlife scenes.

Our trip was perfectly organised by Rustom @ Safarinut. The itinerary was very carefully drafted for our family and Rustom work did not stop in organising the trip, but was always on during our stay, making sure that everything was dealt safely, smoothly and professionally. Our only regret is that we have worked with Rustom only over the last few years and not earlier.

He suggested to experience the Masai Mara like never before staying at the Jahazi Suite at Mara Plains. It was our third time in the Mara (always with Safari Nut) and being the camp a Relais & Chateaux our expectations were quite high right from the beginning.
The camp and the team truly exceeded our expectations. Mara Plains is a beautiful camp immerse in the vegetation of the savanna and our words cannot do justice to its beauty and elegance. It is probably one of the best properties in the African continent.
The service was truly impeccable and we enjoyed every moment of our staying. The entire team was very friendly expecially with our kids.
The quality of the meals and cocktails is at Michelin star level and Rolex that looked after us made memorable cocktails for the entire family.
The camp positioning was such that wild life was all around us, from Hippo and crocodiles in the stream that surrounds the Camp to lions and all the big fives just few steps outside.
Our staying was truly as good as it gets and we cannot wait to return.

This was our first Safari trip and we were a bit clueless on what to expect. When we walked in to the property we were greeted with the biggest welcome, staff immediately made us feel welcomed, and our tent was ready. We didn't know what to expect from a 'tent' as we have never done this before but all I can say is - WOW. They nailed it. The deck even has a stationary bike in case you need to move your legs from being in the Jeep too much. True luxury both with the decor and then the staff takes it to the next level. They learn what you like to drink, eat, when you like to nap, etc - and it's all done for you before you can even blink let alone ask. The guide we had was amazing and knew everything about the area and all the animals - and we saw everything we wanted to see. When we were leaving we were sad to leave the staff who all felt like friends we've had for years! I can't recommend this place enough.

Mara Plains was one of two Great Plains camps in Kenya we visited. We spent four wonderful days there and enjoyed nearly every minute (except for an unexpected downpour from a typhoon in the Indian Ocean).
First - the camp is situated along a river, and one crosses a bridge to access the facilities. We heard hippos often during day. While I appreciate that some may not enjoy their bellowing, I loved their sounds. It emphasized that we were truly in the wild, yet not at all uncomfortable with our tent. As the camp is not fenced, a Masai escorts you to your room after dark.
The staff of the lodge was superb. Our guide was very knowledgeable, our butler took great care of us, the housekeeper, and others were terrific, and I have to express our sincere thanks to Dee, the manager. When my wife was a bit under the weather, she produced exactly the OTC medicine needed to remedy things.
Game viewing was superb. As our guide said, you will be tired of seeing lions, elephants, zebras, etc. We were fortunate to often see cheetah. The one animal missing was a leopard. We received a knock on our door one afternoon - hurry, there's been a leopard spotted. While it was surrounded by vehicles, I thought, oh well, we did get a glimpse. But our guide positioned us perfectly, The leopard got up, strolled by our vehicle and literally seemed to pose for five minutes. What a superb ending to the day.
One last note - the food is sooo good and sooo plentiful.
Highly recommend this property

This is a very easy 5 star review as everything about Mara Plains is top notch, right from the minute you arrive at the beautifully hidden entrance, the rope walk over the little stream to the camp (where you’ll often see hippos wallowing down below), to the very atmospheric main tent, lovely rooms, and of course the fantastic staff.

Due to a booking mixup on the part of my tour operator, I was generously upgraded to the family suite, an absolutely huge tent with 2 bedrooms and a small private pool. The space was honestly wasted on me as a solo travel but it was a very nice gesture nonetheless, and for completeness I used both the bedrooms during my 3 nights at the camp.

Too many thoughtful touches through the camp to list - they do a very cool thing where they vary the dinner arrangements a little bit some nights, so one night you might sit out in the open for a different experience, they provide you with binoculars and their own high quality camera, a memory stick with all your photos at the end of the trip, hot water bottles in the room. Two of the Great Plains staff, Georgina and Savanna (apologies if spellings or names have been butchered here) hosted me for dinner one night which I very much enjoyed.

The safari experience was also incredible. I didn’t realise it at the time, but the fully open vehicles the camp provides are a HUGE luxury compared to some of the more restrictive alternatives I saw from other camps. My guide Daniel was excellent overall - really good English, very patient, great at spotting wildlife. My one bit of feedback would be, it would be highly appreciated if there were a little bit more silence during the really rare sightings - all too often there was radio chatter, conversation with other guides parked nearby, and even shutter clicks from his camera that sort of took me out of the moment. I understand that he ought to ping other guides about sightings, but that’s a quick thing that should not be a long drawn out conversation - in many cases there were 15 minute+ conversations that continued unabated, and looking back at some of the videos I took at least half of them were spoiled by this. That is probably my single biggest complaint about my experience overall.

My other criticisms are all very minor: I think it would be nice if they served more freshly squeezed fruit juices given how much amazing local fruit there is in Kenya, there is some slightly dodgy rotting wood on some of the terrace areas (my foot almost went through when a plank cracked at one point) so this should really be addressed before an accident happens, and lastly I do think the night time escort from the room to lobby should be optional, especially after signing a release form. It feels a bit overkill - if my time has come, let it be death by hippo.

5 star safari camp. Rooms are amazing. Walking over the suspension bridge, with hippos underneath, from the main building to our room- opening the door to a large, luxurious, clean and well appointed “tent”. Sat on our patio in the afternoon watching zebras, impala, gazelle, buffalo, topi all walking by.
This camp is outstanding and the people make it amazing. Charles was our waiter. We enjoyed talking with him and he was kind, attentive, and a pleasure to be with at each of our meals. Mumbo and Douglas helped make it special. William took great care of out room. Duncan was our guide- helpful, patient, knowledgeable and professional. Staying on the conservancy land is ESSENTIAL and is a much better overall Safari experience. The food is very good and a good variety. Open bar. Snacks all the time. It takes your breath away as you sip a gin and tonic in your private, open air, Land Cruiser with your guide at sunset as cheetahs, elephant, giraffe, wildebeest, impala, gazelle, jackal, and others are all surrounding you. Can’t wait to return.

Our guide, Kevin, showed us one magical moment after another. He had a wealth of knowledge and was a joy to talk to. We especially appreciated his ‘bush eye’ - he saw things we could barely make out even after he pointed them to us. He was always looking for opportunities to amaze us. It is rare to see the elusive leopard. We not only saw one, we followed her as she stalked and then killed an Impala. On our final morning, he drove us to the airport. On the way he spotted a Serval Cat. He went out of the way to get us close. We saw it pounce up in the air and capture a little mouse - what a great last memory.

We came to take great photographs and Kevin gave us hundreds of opportunities to take pictures that we absolutely love. We would have been happy staying in a cardboard box for the opportunity to take came drives with him. So, the BIG bonus was the wonderful facility and the personal connections we made with the staff. Dee, is so easy to love. Richard was always surprising us with delicious food and new locations to eat. Fred, our room steward, was eager to help us in anyway.

We also enjoyed sitting around the fire talking to other guests

We had the pleasure of staying at Great Plains Conservation Mara Plains in the private Olare Motorogi Conservancy Camp for 5 days last month. We considered many camps in the Masai Mara and were guided well by several sources to Mara Plains Camp. The Camp is a Relais & Chateau affiliate and certainly lives up to reputation of this global luxury association. We cannot say enough about the lodge, staff, twice a day safari game drives, dining, and more. Each morning we were awaken with our beverage of choice then off we went at sunrise with our excellent driver/guide Frances for morning safari including a stop under a shady tree for full service breakfast. Late morning we returned to the lodge for lunch and rest. Then off again around 4:30pm for our second safari drive at sunset and sundowner beverages finally returning to the lodge after dark for drinks and multi course dinner. Our gaming encounters were beyond our expectations. We had heard the private conservancy had lot of Cats...and it did! The attention to detail at Mara Plains goes unrivaled. We could live in their tents! The owners have created a foundation and are giving back in so many ways to protect the wildlife, local communities, their staff and more. A huge applause to the founders and all who make our stay so memorable.

What a marvelous experience I had at this beautiful camp.
The location,is,superb and the rooms are beautifully furnished as is the main living area and the library.
The staff is outstanding led by an outstanding manager and support team.
Our game viewing experience was unbelievable under the guidance of Franklin, a superb, guide.
We were incredibly lucky to have an encounter between a cheetah with her two, cubs and a leopard. Fortunately the cheetah was able to,scare the leopard back into the forest.
The fact that this camp,is on a private conservancy meant that there were almost no other vehicles, a most favorable addition to the already many excellent features.
Once again, Great Plains is one of the finest organizations in Africa and I admire their expertise and work ethic.
Thank you,all for making our stay so enjoyable and kudos to all of you

Mara Plains was a fantastic all inclusive camp in the Maasai Mara area of Kenya. We were in Africa for almost a month and stayed in 5 different camps. They were all exceedingly wonderful but none were more elegant than Mara Plains. The common areas were breathtaking with wonderful artwork and decor. Even the silverware was noteworthy; probably the nicest I’ve ever used (funny thing to notice but it was so beautiful that my husband and I marveled). The food was astoundingly great. Of all things, I think I had the best chicken of my life for dinner one night - yes, boring old chicken but it was superb! Each night we were seated in a different area and each time we thought nothing could surpass that and then it did. The game drives were wonderful; we saw so many animals and had several life highlight experiences, including seeing a lion kill (unfortunately it was a mama and baby baboon so kind of sad) and several other dramatic lion experiences. And we saw a cheetah mom and her three babies: awwwwww! Our guide, Dixon, really had a sense of where exciting things were happening and was full of knowledge and expertise about the animals, birds, plants…. The special events that were organized for us were outstanding; I won’t say too much as the surprise factor is part of the fun.

The tent was wonderful (hard to call it a tent when it was nicer than any hotel I’ve ever stayed at, and that is saying something! With only 5 or 6 tents altogether, it was super private. Our back deck overlooked a stream where a bloat of hippos hung out. What a delight to go to sleep with a hippo lullaby! A very high end camera was available in the room if one wanted to have heavy duty photography experience. We didn’t avail ourselves of it but it was a really nice and thoughtful touch. The decor was perfect and the bed was so comfortable. Morning coffee made the early wake up no problem. And there was a really wonderful gift shop there with a great selection of local crafts and very reasonable prices. I wish I had picked up a couple more things!

If you find yourself with the opportunity to stay at Mara Plains, you better take advantage of it! You will be so happy you did and the memories will be treasured forever.

Yes! You need a yellow fever shot and proof of this vaccination, and you should take malaria pills beforehand and during the trip as well. Check out Passport Health online and you can find a local clinic that specializes in trips to unique parts of the world. They'll know exactly what you need!
