I've always wanted to see the inside of one of those old Soviet apartment blocks and this proved that opportunity in Bishkek. It is billed as a hostel, but it is more like a hared air bnb. Ahead of time I was messaged with impeccable instructions about how to find the entry and gain access with a passcode. It is easy to find; just follow the instructions.

Inside I was met by the son of the owner (he speaks English; his mother does not). I had the pink room with Lenin's photo. It was very cute. The bathroom, kitchen, and toilet are shared. There is no common area per se, but there is a seating area in the kitchen around a table.

Everything was just fine and I was happy. The wifi was excelled, there was hot water, and I made coffee in the morning. The location is very good. It is close to a ton of restaurants and shops and on a busy street with lots of transport. I walked everywhere from the hostel, including to Ash Bazaar and all the museums.

It had history, some charm, and the price was right. I would stay again.

We had a really nice time at this hostel, the staff is very kind and welcoming. It's clean and homely! In addition it's straight in the centre of Bishkek, which is very good. There's a kitchen and washing machine, and the staff can answer every question and arrange for transport. Worth a visit!

Stayed with friends in this hostel and have really mixed feelings about it.
The location of the hostel is fine. Its close to downtown. Hostel is located in one of big apartment houses and presents itself a regular soviet 3-bedroom apartment with one bathroom for all the bedrooms and common kitchen (tea and coffee are provided).
Hostel is clean in general, however I saw a cockroach in the kitchen once..
During our stay the washing machine was not working (sign covered it offering to use washing machine next door). Fridge was also not particularly cold: milk got sour overnight. Beds are not very comfortable, unless you like hard beds.
During our stay there was a major water supply disruption in the building. Basically for around 10 hours we were completely out of water. Pretty sure it's just bad luck but still unpleasant.
Staff is ok and tries to be helpful, but not proactive. One of the ladies is a little emotional and gets defensive when something goes wrong.
Bottom line - next time will try another hostel.

We enjoyed the atmosphere and felt at home in the USSR hostel. The hostel has two apartments and my favorite room is the Lenin room with a green view and dark at night. The owners are very sympathetic and the atmosphere relaxed.

This place is cozy, which is an absolute exception in Bishkek. The hostel is in fact (like most cases in Kyrgyzstan) and apartment made into a hostel. We staied in April 2015, paying 20$ for a double room (but the owner said normal price would be 30$).

Pros:
• central (on Chuy Street close to Tzum shopping mall) – ask owner specific directions to find the entrance. The entrance is NOT on Chui, but right behind it.
• cozy, small but beautiful apartment, kept with care
• very clean
• friendly staff, very helpful
• rooms are quite big, with nice view (4th floor)
• several minibus going there
• nice kitchen with possibility of cooking your own food, microwave and washing machine
• heating and air conditioning available
• good shower, hot water anytime
• free internet
• common room is very nice, with big lockers
• on low season you might have the whole apartment for yourself.

Cons:
• no private facilities, there is only one small toilet and one small bathroom + shower in the whole apartment, so in high season (the hostel can take up to 8-9 people) you might have to queue for quite some time to shower/go to the toilet
• beds are honestly very uncomfortable
• breakfast is NOT included
• not much privacy, the apartment is rather old and you can hear everything through doors
• as most of the accomodations in Bishkek, it is overpriced. 20-30$ for a double room with no toilet and no breakfast in a developing country like Kyrgyzstan (one of the poorest in Central Asia) is simply crazy: there are hostels in European capitals which come cheaper. However it is in the average of other accomodations in the city. Bishkek is in general very expensive.

Overall, we would come back again, it is very nice to have found a cozy and clean place, it is not common. Thanks to the owners for a very nice stay!

My friend and I arrived in Kyrgyzstan at 5:00am and the hostel did arrange airport transfer for $15. But we were not actually in a hostel but a random apartment not in the city center. And in our location, it was quite dangerous to walk around after dark as 2 girls. The lady who we spoke with did speak English which helped but we had to email her and wait for a response since there was no reception. The bed was also like sleeping on a brick.

This hostel as noted before is two apartments in a building within walking distance of the center of Bishkek. There is no staff that is located at the hostel but they will meet you at the airport or can arrange to meet you at your time of arrival at the hostel. Sometimes the staff is there during the day for cleaning or just to make sure everything is OK.

I would advise you to get a local mobile number anyway since you will need your GPS maps to get around. The staff will help arrange some tours and give you recommendations. There are maps of the city at the hostel.

The hostel was very comfortable and quiet. Everything was clean. There are full kitchens and laundry available. The WiFI works well. Rooms have A/C.

The one thing that is a drawback is the curtains are too light and allow the morning light in at 06:00 and make it difficult to sleep.

Overall, a great hostel in Bishkek. It's not really a hostel, more of an apartment with rented rooms.

Pros:

Location - walking distance to downtown, transport options very close by

Amenities - great wifi, accessible kitchen, clean bathrooms

Laundry - free!

Cons:

Lack of staff- the only thing that bothered me was that it seemed that staff were never there. Whilst they always answered emails or whatsapps quickly, it was a bit uncomfortable being in a place where staff just pop in every now and then.

Also, note that some rooms do not have air-con.

Nonetheless, would certainly recommend staying here.

USSR hostel doesn't really feel like a hostel. In fact it's a flat, rather small one. Bigger room is a 4person dorm, smaller one is a triple private room. There's a regular kitchen and bathroom. We were lucky to occupy the smaller room and to be in the flat all alone.

pros:
- the whole place is freshly refurbished, clean and nicely decorated
- wifi is really good
- laundry is free (!)
- staff is nice and always makes sure you have all you might need. They are not there for most of time but are always a phonecall away
- the fact that the staff trusts the guests is a very nice change from the Bishkek sad mentality where service providers are treating their customers as potential criminals or at least as enemies

there are however some minor points which can be further improved:
- tv signal is weak which makes the brand new big plat screen tv not too useful
- bathtub needs a structural cleaning or replacement
- balcony is cluttered with some old furniture and toys

But all in all it's a very good value for money and staying there is a pure pleasure. Very much recommended.
