What a wonderful time with the most wonderful staff! We spent a month doing work in Addis Ababa and this stay was made great thanks to the efforts of many, especially the great man himself Yoseph ❤️
Rooms were cleaned well everyday, breakfast was delicious and healthy every morning, location was great and central as every driver knew how to get here, and the amenities within Monarch were wonderful (rooftop bar and restaurant, lobby restaurant, new thai/italian/kenyan fusion restaurant).
We had an issue with our room size and kitchen and Yoseph went above and beyond to get us switched and better accommodated in a timely fashion. He also provided us with great tips on things to do in the area as well as a warm welcoming smile during breakfast every morning 😊
Only real issues were: slow Wifi speed (seems to be a problem everywhere in the city), bathroom issues (maintenance came by and fixed it), and ridiculously expensive cost to do laundry compared to anywhere I’ve been.
Regardless, it was a great time as we had over 10 people here! Definitely recommend as long as Yoseph continues to be the one leading the efforts!

I had a great stay at Monarch Hotel. Actually, I am here for an extended stay but thought about writing a review while I'm here enjoying my stay. Rooms are clean, views are great (from your own room as well as from the rooftop lounge) Servers are courteous and professional. Yoseph, Aklilu to mention just a few of them. I hope I know the chefs and kitchen crew by their first name because THEIR FOOD IS AMAZING. Don't be surprised if you find yourself calling room service past midnight. Security is top notch and also liked the fact that all rooms have safe box to keep valuables safe. What else ? Fast internet connection, Uninterpreted power throw your rooms' electric ports, great rates $ considering the location and quality of the service. All in all, I highly recommend Monarch Hotel for your stay in Addis Ababa.

The hotel staff on all levels were very friendly and helpful.
The atmosphere of the hotel, the live band and entertainment are simply amazing.
All service staff very friendly, however the management especially at the restaurant could do with some customer service training, we had a serious complaint and it was unfortunately not managed properly.
The hotel uses extremely strong chemicals to keep the property clean the beddings and the towel smelled of bleach. The use of harsh chemicals in the kitchen were food is prepared is unacceptable.

This is a fairly new hotel in a good location. Staff are nice but there were a number of issues. Ask for a room at the back - we were at the front and were kept up all night one night with very loud prayer call and on other nights, there is street noise. Our bathroom smelled musty and the toilet malfunctioned. And there were some real challenges with housekeeping - towels not replaced and we had to wait 3 days to get laundry done. The bar/restaurant on the top floors is lovely but music is so loud at dinner time you can’t hear each other.

I regret to express my dissatisfaction with the Monarch Hotel, which, in my experience, stands as the least favorable accommodation in Ethiopia. Despite having enjoyed pleasant stays at various hotels across the country, my recent encounter at the Monarch Hotel was disheartening.
During a dinner with friends this week, despite our early booking, the service team appeared unprepared and failed to set up our table promptly. They began arranging the setup only after our arrival. To exacerbate matters, when we requested our food, we were ignored, left without even a simple glass of water. Eventually, the food arrived, but as we were in the midst of our meal, the management team insisted we relocate to the 13th floor. Despite complying, we were then unexpectedly asked to change tables once more, citing a prior reservation without proper communication. This cycle of inconvenience repeated itself, leaving us frustrated and bewildered.
The lack of clear communication and the displayed arrogance of the service staff, along with the unexpected and frequent table changes, cast a shadow over what should have been an enjoyable dining experience. Despite paying a substantial amount, the service, management, and overall demeanor of the staff at Monarch Hotel left much to be desired. In comparison, even small cafeterias prove to be more appealing than this establishment. I cannot, in good conscience, recommend this hotel to anyone. I encourage prospective visitors to heed this cautionary account to avoid what may be a regrettable experience.

Monarch Hotel is an affordable clean hotel in downtown Addis with the best view of any hotel there overlooking both the skyline of Addis, the airport and the Friendship park and Entoto park. Rooms are comfortable, food is good quality and the entertainment in the 360 degree lounge is fantastic . Special mention to Yosef Depresa in the restaurant who was cordial and attentive. The one area for improvement is the maintenance of the plumbing as well as encouraging quests to lower noise in the sleeping areas.

Monarch found a niche in the Addis hotel scene: modern, reliable, comfortable and way cheaper than the "big ones" in Kazanchis. For business travellers who have to stick to a given budget, Monarch should be their first choice. Their staff is very pleasant, beginning for and foremost Yosef Dereje at breakfast who will guarantee you a good start into the day. After work their rooftop bar is a place to be - for locals and travelers. With a view over the whole city, Fikerte will mix you a tasty drink. It is also a good place to meet new people, as I did. I stayed for some good five weeks at Monarch and can recommend for business travelers who stay (even) longer as well as for short stays. Everything you need you'll find in the rooms - comfortable beds and little to no noise included. Despite being located very central in Addis, other dining options than their own restaurant are scarce in walking distance, but that is nothing to blame the hotel for. Taxis/Rides are always available in front of the hotel. I'll recommend to my colleagues who'll stay in Addis in the next years, too.

I stayed at the monarch for 2 weeks. When making my reservations, I scheduled an airport pickup. No one was at the airport when I arrived. Thankfully I had friends already at the hotel and they double checked and sent the shuttle so they arrived very quickly. However when our friends left for the weekend, their scheduled shuttle was not there. They tried calling the front desk numerous times and no one answered. When i went downstairs, the front desk attendant, Mary, was asleep on a couch in the lobby. The hotel is located on a busy street and is very loud with construction throughout the night. I probably only got 1 uninterrupted nights sleep. The housekeeping doesn’t leave extra toilet paper. I had to call every time i got low. I also had to call every single day for a hand towel because they would take it and not replace it. Finally, the credit card machines almost never worked in the restaurant. The first one they tried at checkout also didn’t work. The rooms are fine and decently clean.

For taxis locals pay about half to a third of a foreigner. They will try to get 100 birr ($5) for any ride which is typically too much for short rides. From the airport to the hotel is very short and 50 birr is plenty. They will really push you for more and make it uncomfortable. There are many taxis so you have to shop to the next one and someone will give on what you are willing to pay.
Meals at the hotels are anywhere from 80-200 birr ($4-$10). Monarch is mostly in the 110-150 birr range ($5.50 - $7.50). It is as good as any other place. Make sure you try the local food as it is quite good.
There are more places to choose from in the Addis Ababa area.
