Detailed Reviews
Our family booked 2 rooms at the Fairfield Inn and Suites over the Christmas holiday and we could not have been more pleased with our stay.
The staff was very friendly, accommodating and professional. We met the manager prior to our stay and she gave us a complete tour and made certain that our stay went smoothly. After all, it was the holidays.
We are so happy

For this price point and class of hotel this one hit all the marks for me except one. The breakfast was very good, well stocked while we were eating with a decent variety of choices. Overall the hotel was very clean.
My problem? This motel by far had the worst mattress I have slept on in a long time. Waaaay to soft for my liking. My butt went down, my feet went up, and being a side sleeper it was uncomfortable. I don't know if the mattress is supposed to be this way or was "broken down" in the middle. 2 very poor nights sleep. My wife agreed. We were in a double queen room and hindsight being 20/20 we should have tried the other bed to see if that was better. If you like super soft mattresses (and some people do) this hotel is for you.
Other minor complaint, a pet peeve of mine, is mismatched light bulbs. Are you going to have daylight bulbs (brighter white) or soft white bulbs (yellowish white)? Not normally a big deal if in different fixtures, but they had them mismatched within the same fixture! Simply poor attention to details that would be super easy to correct or prevent when replacing bulbs. This lack of attention to details prevented me from giving this hotel 5 dots

So, are you a traveling night shift worker? Do you want a hotel that is quiet, comfortable and friendly? I highly suggest this hotel. I LOVE this hotel. The beds are comfortable, the water is hot, the staff is friendly, the breakfast is hot and ready for you when you get off work AND the best part.... this hotel is quiet during the day so you can sleep for your night shift. I can not say enough about this hotel. I LOVE LOVE this hotel. 5 stars. 5 thumbs up.

Our reservation was canceled by the GM as we were getting on the road to travel to Ames. Thomas Romero the GM did not return my phone calls and did not plan on making this situation better until I contacted Marriott corporate offices. Dont book at this hotel if you can avoid it

Easy on and off the interstate. Hotel is in an area with about 10 hotels. There are only 2 restaurants within walking distance. Good breakfast - lots of choices. Clean hotel. Small elevator. Nice staff. Indoor pool is small but looks adequate.

I actually signed up for yelp just to write this review. I travel all over the country on business and stay at Marriott's all the time. When scheduling this trip I originally made my reservation at the Courtyard in West Des Moines, but as I was traveling into Ames, I saw the Fairfield off the side of the road and while eating breakfast at Panera with my daughter, I called the Fairfield Inn to see if I could switch my reservation over to them and if they would honor my room rate. When I called in I do what I normally do and asked for the Manager on duty. I was told by the person who answered the phone Omit, that there was no manager there currently as he direct manager had suffered a loss in the family and was out of town. I explained to Omit that I have a friend who works for Mariott and I would be using, as I always do, a friends and family discount on my room, which I had been provided with documentation for. I explained to Omit that my reservation at the previous hotel was under a friends a nd family discount as well, and after placing me on hold for a few minutes came back on and told me that he would be happy to honor the rate this one time, but not to expect everyone to be able to do it if I was in the same situation again, to which I gladly agreed and told him I would be on my way. I then gave him my information and read the contents of the discount form I had with me and once again asked him that he was certain that he would be able to honor that rate to which he replied yes. After 30 minutes of driving I arrived at the hotel, and as I presented Omit with my drivers license and Credit card he informed me that the rate would in fact be an additional $30.00 to which I replied a little frustrated "That is not what you told me on t he phone and I would not have driven all the way back here had the rate been higher." I then started to ask him why he told me one thing on the phone but was now trying to jack the price up on me, and he very rudely interrupted me in mid sentence to which I said "Sir, please do not interrupt me while I am speaking" I then began to finish my sentence and he again interrupted me in mid sentence. Frustrated and feeling unappreciated as a customer and not wanting to continue a conversation with someone who felt it was appropriate to speak to a customer in such a way, I asked him for his card and informed him I would simply call corporate to take care of the situation. I also told him he was a liar for telling me one thing on the phone and then changing it when I arrived. I called into corporate, and spoke to Mary, who very quickly contacted the front desk , corrected the problem, and told me that I could now go back in and check in at the rate I was promised. When i walked back in, I walked up to the counter where there was a young women waiting to help me. Omit was standing behind her and a little off to the left. As I handed the young lady my information Omit said "Make sure you explain the rules to him" stunned I ignored him the first time. and continued to watch the young women behind the counter enter information into the computer. Getting no response from me, he repeated it again. This time I looked at him and said "Sir, I stay at Marriott hotels all the time, I am very aware of what the rules are." he turned and walked away from the counter making a shish type of sound as he walked away. At this point I noticed the tag that the young women had on it said "General manager" I asked "Mam, are you the general manager" to which she replied 'Yes" I then asked "Do you believe that this is acceptable behavior from an employee with a guest?" to which she replied, "If you continue to argue with my employee's then I am going to make you leave the hotel." I was floored at this point. Never in my life have I ever received such a poor level of customer service from a Marriott, or any other business for that matter. I informed the lady behind the counter that I wanted my information back and that their was no way I would stay at a Marriott again after having been treated that way. Not only am I going to post this information on every social networking site I can find...It is going out to my 500 employees and 200,000 customers. Hopefully someone sees this and fixes these two problem employes. Absolutely horrible experience....

This is my third time staying at this property in three years, and I am in Ames on business all the time and am a Marriott Platinum member. I almost always stay 40 minutes away in Ankeny because this place is so bad. It has been over a year, so I thought I would try it again... Worst mistake I could have made
Internet does not work, although they say it does...
Heater in Room was broken
Floor was dirty and room was dusty
Girl at desk hardly speaks English
At least it wasn't the Bates Motel

I stayed there for two days about two months ago and booked another stay for arrival today since I was going to be back in town and it was a nice place. The rooms were clean, the pool was a nice place for my girls to swim, the breakfast was a nice thing to have.
However after having a run in with the GM, Michael Goldberg I'll refuse to go back there and will tell everyone I know not to go there either. I've been in the hotel field for 10 years now, five with Holiday Inn and another five with Marriott. It's been ingrained in me to clean up your own messes when you're on the road, to treat it like your own house. Always think, "Would I do this in my own house?" If the answer is no, then you don't do that, respect it as if it were your own. I KNOW the housekeepers appreciate that. So we were there for two days, we didn't eat in the room we always went out, most of the time was spent treating the girls and the girlfriend to things I don't get to do since I hardly ever get to see them. I get a call today saying that he would not allow me to come back since the room was a mess the last time I stayed there, WTF? Nothing was eaten in the room, one of the beds wasn't even slept in, it was used to open up presents for the girls. I cleaned the room before I left, (Including the wrappings from the presents)as I've always done. He even went to the length of calling my GM, (I'm a Front Desk Manager) and telling him that I was not allowed to come back since the room "Was a mess". I would hate to see what they do to people that leave towels on the floor or heaven forbid something left outside of a trash bin. I went into work on my day off to tell my boss that Mr. Goldberg is making completely baseless accusations and at this point just making stuff up. If I were Mr. Goldberg I would love to have someone at my property that treated it with such respect. All just because I'd managed to book an employee rate online and used my Rewards Number to pull up my information.
From this point on I'll be staying at the Fairfield in Ankeny because maybe they actually respect the people that stay there. I wonder just how horribly you treat the people that work hard everyday for you, you should be ashamed.

The room had mold. When I complained to the manager they told me to leave. Never staying here again, I will be going to the Hampton across the street that is new. The internet never worked. Then they charged me the night I left because I checked out at 4:00 and not 3:00. Manager and staff is rude.

This quite new Fairfield Inn is conveniently located to people traveling on Interstate 35 or US 30, particularly if you're visiting Iowa State University.
The beds are very comfortable, and the staff is welcoming and helpful. The complimentary breakfast is tasty and nourishing. Pricing is competitive.
I greatly enjoyed my stay and will definitely consider this property if I stay in Ames in the future.
