When we arrived, we did find the staff working and dedicated to making our stay as pleasant and enjoyable as possible. This property is in the process of raising their standards and making needed improvements. Management is involved in dedicated way, and treated us as their guests with significant levels of appreciation. The future of this property is very bright, especially when you treat your guests as well as they treated us.

Three of us were on our way to Kansas City from Minneapolis and found Grandstay Hotel & Suites in Ames, Iowa to be the perfect midway location. This hotel was very clean and accommodating. We were able to reserve a two bedroom suite with a pull-out sofa which was great for us since we each had our own space and even separate televisions. A small kitchenette made heating up food easy and the hotel breakfast was complete with eggs, sausage, waffles and other items such as yogurt. The hotel staff was friendly and easy to work with, even though we arrived after midnight. We would definitely recommend this Grandstay Hotel & Suites. It was easy to find from Hwy 35 too.

Hotel is due for a renovation, continental breakfast was awful even our teenage son who eats everything in sight couldn’t eat it. Restaurant is connected to hotel. We had the one bedroom and it was perfect for our family of 4. Kids slept on couch and we had the bedroom.

Dirty dirty dirty everywhere! It was painfully obvious that cleaning was hit the middle and forget anything else. Dirty bathroom sink and shower floor with litter around the edges of the room. Heaven forbid anyone would dust the top of anything above three feet off the floor. The elevator and luggage cart where just gross. Desk help was nice but everything else was unacceptable. To top it off we needed a handicapped room which they had on the third floor. When I spoke to the front desk and mentioned that there is a big red sign saying that in the event of a fire the elevator won’t work I asked how do you get someone in a wheel chair out of the building if they are on the third floor. Got a blank stare and did not know how. To her credit she admitted it was pretty stupid putting a handicap room on any floor but the first. Would not recommend this place to anyone and certainly won’t stay in any GrandStay again.

We checked in late in the evening and noticed immediately that the room we received was not what we had booked online. The website clearly indicated in the description and in photos that the 2-bedroom suite had separate bedrooms with doors that closed and separated the areas. I told the front desk clerk about the issue and was told that there were no other rooms and that due to multiple events in town that weekend, all other hotels were booked as well. We contacted the booking company right away that night and did not make much progress with them. We felt we had no other options and made the best of it for the two nights we were there but found out later that we should have gotten out right away if we wanted any recourse for this issue. I spent many days over the next few weeks trying to remedy the situation with the 3rd-party booking site I had booked through (a very frustrating process). When I finally reached the extent of what I could do with the booking company (very minimal) they suggested that I could try to contact the hotel for some sort of a refund since the hotel had denied their request. I called the hotel right after that, and the manager insinuated that I was only looking for compensation after my stay. He was quite rude and eventually hung up on me. Do not believe what you see on the website! There is no guarantee you will get what you paid for, and the conditions of the rooms are less than stellar on top of it. Our dishwasher didn't work, the small closet smelled like pet urine, and the beds were horribly uncomfortable. Our family travels a lot for tournaments, and we always leave positive reviews for properties that meet or exceed our expectations. The same is true for negative experiences. Hopefully others will heed these warnings and choose a different property instead.

I can't rate the hotel because they called us two days before we were due to arrive to tell us that they were doing work on several rooms and couldn't accommodate us. No "let us help you" or "we'll put you into other rooms" -- just "you'll need to book a room elsewhere". 2 days before we were to fly in for a funeral. Don't stay at this hotel, even if they give you the opportunity. You might find yourselves high and dry, too.

Maryann~ Thank you for taking the time to respond and leaving feedback regarding your experience. In doing research on your reservation, you were due to check-in on 4/23. Our front desk agent contacted you Tuesday to inform you of our unforeseeable repairs to your suite. During this time, we offered several other hotels with the same room layout and rate that had availability. you can assure our team worked diligently to try and resolve the issue. We apologize we did not meet your expectations and hope for another opportunity to accommodate you in the future. Kind regards, Nicole Gibbs General Manager GrandStay Hotel & Suites Ames Iowa

To the Management:
No one a the front desk and i heard someone talking in the back office as I said hello. They both came out and as looking unhappy and the only words this person said when I ask for the bag of breakfast is how many do you want.. the other staff with her shook her head as she walks out the door. No good morning or whatsoever and i am expecting a greetings to be polite and I cant believed how these staff behave in a hospitality business like this, my opinion, find another front desk agent if this business owner wants to make money. This pandemic is hard enough for business alone. We are a hotel owners in Lake Geneva and if my staff behaves this way, I will fire them in a heart beat and find good people immediately.

First glance, it seemed like it would be an okay hotel experience. Reviews were mixed, but our family usually gives the benefit of the doubt to the good reviews. We were greeted by a happy hotel staff member at the front desk. However, he and his coworker expressed that they were stressed as the hotel had never been booked this full before. We get to the room. It's not clean. Mold growing in the tub. dirt on the floor. large pretzel debris in the pull out bed. The pull out "bed" is the main source of contention. There was no bedding provided anywhere in the room for the pull out (and yes, we reserved a two bed room). We knew they were busy at the front desk, so my husband went down to get bedding. They were able to provide sheets and a pillow, but no pillow sheets or blankets were available. The mattress in question was heavily stained and very thin. The mattress was lumpy and painful. we tried moving it to the floor to see if that would provide more support, but it didn't. My older son chose to curl up on the floor instead. The regular bed wasn't bad and the room was nice in the respect there was a full size fridge. location was Convenient. While we were there a pipe leaked and the stairs became unaccessible for a day. The pool is tiny. It's all concrete and the floor becomes very slippery. The hot tub was out of order and looked as though a large amount of mud had accumulated at the bottom of it. If you need one bed only and just need a place to stay overnight this wouldn't be the worst option, but if you have a family look elsewhere.

The rooms were nice (separate living room and bedroom), but only have one bed. The room also included a full size refrigerator and stovetop. The pull out sofa in the living room is not comfortable, so I wouldn't stay here again if I needed two beds. The hotel included free breakfast, but it was below average based on my experience. Another issue is the hotel is currently short-staffed (as are most businesses in Ames), so sometimes the front desk is empty

We waited 15 minutes at the front desk and an employee was nowhere to be found. We called the number posted on the desk, but it just rang. I finally called their corporate number and they got ahold of the employee on duty.
The pull-out couch was DISGUSTING. Glad we had an inflatable mattress as backup. Getting extra sheets and blankets took several trips to the front desk before an employee was present to ask for some.

GrandStay does not have a shuttle; however, we would be happy to assist you with arrangements for a taxi to take you to Stephens Auditorium. Stephens is 1.3 miles away from the hotel.
