This is probably the best value for your money on the island (and we did a lot of comparing). We stayed in an ocean view room and enjoyed our stay. You have to realize that this isn’t like a hotel in the U.S. There are a lot of stray cats that live behind the guest house and you can hear cat fights at night. They do come up to you looking for food/attention in you’re hanging out on the porch. The beds were not very comfortable, the showers are salty, and the air conditioners are noisy, but this helped block out noise from outside. Front Street can get noisy at night with people hanging out by the local bars/restaurants. This accommodation is close to the split and all the places to eat on front street. The rooms are very clean and having a fridge is worth it! We would stay here again.

Like some others, we were running away from a bad guest house when we arrived at Da Real Macaw. Peter and Jesse were cool and laid back and quickly showed us to a room, and said we could have it first thing in the morning after checking out of our bad place.
The bed was comfy, there was enough room for two girls and the bathroom was clean with a great shower. Peter and Jesse were around in the day just chatting and taking in the relaxed ambience of the world outside their front lawn.
Especially cute were their crazy puppies!

Just got back from Belize yesterday and I am definitely missing De Real McCaw.

PROS: This hotel has a great location...It is close enough to walk to/from the front dock and is a short walk to the split. De Real McCaw is surrounded by restaurants and tours. I stayed in an upper cabanna without AC, but I didn't miss it. There is always a breeze and it feels great to just lay in a hammock and rock back and forth. The showers are cool, but it felt good in the afternoon after swiming/snorkeling etc. I think I might even start taking cool showers at home (I live in San Antonio). And the price is great- a very good deal. The owners-Peter and Jesse- are super nice and laid back.

CONS: There were cats that kept fighting and cat calling outside during the night. But it didn't bother me too much, because chose to lay there rather than go yell at them and scare them away! That is it though, the only CON I can think of.

I would recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Caye Caulker.

We stayed at de Real Macaw January 2022. We moved out as soon as we could as it is quite run down. The fridge did not work and there was no coffee pot. Management was not answering their phone to help us find the room assigned to us. The screen doors block the room number from view. There was a deserted Real Macaw office a block over but it seemed like it hadn’t been used in the last few years. It appeared to us that the apartments that garnered good reviews in the past are no longer part of de Real Macaw. All that is left is quite run-down and nowhere near worth what we paid, nor worth the rating that trip advisor has given it. It should be around a 1 or 2.

I booked a room here 3 months prior to arrival and paid with credit card to GUARANTEE reservation. When I arrived the owner from Seattle, Rob, somehow forgot my reservation and was fully booked. He was quite sneaky and thinking on his feet and gave me a room in the back what wasn't what I booked and wasn't part of the proper building structure. There was a gap between the laundry room and this room and the room filled up with all kinds of bugs. There were animals and other things on the roof and it was in the back so very dark and noisy from the bar / restaurant next door. His wife told me that he rented to backpackers so that is why he gave me her room. I was bitten by sand flies etc., mosquitos, etc., and didn't sleep. I asked for another room, and he said "maybe"... I was quite disturbed by the lack of responsibility, consideration, integrity, etc. I had to walk around Caye Caulker to look for another place to stay. I checked back and he had one vacancy and since I was so tired I decided to just change rooms instead of moving etc. That was a big mistake but I was so tired and worn out I wasn't thinking clearly. I should have just left. Anyhow, no screens on windows and locks, no security, no phones, and more bugs. There are bugs in the rooms and beds. I was eaten alive. A local workman from The Real Macaw got drunk and was banging on my door and window at 2 am and then started using the F word when I wouldn't open the door. I didn't sleep again that night. And there is no one around to help. Last night also bad. I had planned to just relax in Caye Caulker and it was anything but. The place is dirty, dumpy, and not modern or convenient like the website says. I checked other places and asked people staying there and they said the rooms were clean, good, etc. The Real Macaw did not honour my paid reservation, did not provide safe comfortable accommodation and did not care at all. The lack of consideration was really ugly. They just get the money and then you are on your own. The property itself is dirty and full of bugs. And the picture and marketing like the one and only, is extremely embellished and misleading. This was a really bad ending to my time in Belize. I was enjoying Belize very much up until I came to Caye Caulker and stayed at this crappy place. I am writing this because people work hard and only have a certain amount of time for vacation and not keeping my reservation and putting me somewhere with bugs, etc. and the owner knew of the gap where the bugs could enter, is just plain wrong. And I was so sleep deprived and itchy I just wanted to leave. So my rating is zero stars. I would stay somewhere else. The website is misleading it is a small place and a dirty dumpy. And they do not care about you.

Response from DeRealMacaw, Manager at De Real Macaw
Responded Dec 13, 2012
We work hard to provide clean, comfortable accommodations and a friendly, welcoming environment. When we fail, we appreciate honest feedback that shows us where we fell short and where we need to improve. We slip up occasionally. Travelers and hoteliers that use this site frequently, know to be cautious of reviews that go to the extreme, favorable or unfavorable, and that the most honest and helpful reviews are somewhere in between. We encourage travelers to read a wide range of our reviews and you will see a consistent theme throughout: we go out of our way to make our guests feel comfortable and secure and when problems arise, we handle them quickly and with care. We regret that we did not do for this quest what we do so well for so many others. Nevertheless, we thank this guest for staying with us and wish her well on all of her future travels.

My family stayed here for four nights in July and thought it was great. Between the two bedrooms (one with bunk beds) and the futon in the living room, there was plenty of space for the five of us. Plus, there's a full kitchen and dining area.

It's across the street from the water and a very close walk to the split and the main part of the town (if there is a main part!).

The owners/staff were friendly, the room was clean and it's a nice, quiet place.

I would definitely stay there again.

Wow, we were at this hotel for 3 days and we loved it! My friends and I believe it's the best one on Caye Caulker. The rooms were clean and big enough for the 4 of us. The owner Jessie was adorable and helpful. Staying at The Real Macaw allows you to really get into the island vibe with the hammocks and the chairs in the backyard... It's also right by the beach and really close to everything in town (grocery store, restaurants, tours, bars...). I recommand it to everyone.

De Real Macaw is north of the water-taxi along Front Street (actually a sand path, no shoes necessary) which is the part of the Caye that we liked most because it is closer to "the split". The water at the split is turquoise and has a great wood-shack bar with tables in the water. A great place to relax and watch the sunset. The public beach is up there too. South of the water-taxi there are nice places to stay, but the water has sea-grass and is murky.

We stayed in the lower cabana. Has a hammock, fan in room, a deck with chair, clothes line for laundry, a drawer with a lock for your use and nice big bathroom. Room was cleaned and sheets changed each day. There is a nice community court with deck chairs that is home to three very cute dogs and a couple cats. $56 US a night.

Very nice staff that will help you with anything and answer all questions.

Tips
Music played late at the restuarant next door, but only on Friday night.
The stars are amazing - go out and lay on one of the docks and take advantage of that view
The sun will burn you - we used sunscreen, but not enough (warning to people from colder climates)
Lobster dinners $12 US at the Rainbow

Recommendations for Caye Caulker
1. Street Food! Hand 2 Mouth Shack across from De Real Macaw. Full Belizean Breakfast. Da Budget Man for lunch / dinner. He'll be right on Front Street near De Real Macaw.
Mr. Sweets for a snack. You can't miss him and his cart of treats. And The Pie Lady for late night dessert. She'll be with her cart, again around De Real Macaw.

2. All tour companies do the same thing for snorkeling. It is great. Should be $80-90 Belize bucks for full day and include lunch, water and Rhum Punch.

3. Go Slow is the motto of the Caye Caulker. If you need to be pampered or need to use credit card everywhere - go to Ambergris Caye. If you want to chill, go to Caye Caulker.

Caye Caulker is paradise - don't spoil it.

Firstly, most of what is said in the other reviews is correct: De Real Macaw is a nice place to stay. But note how most reviewers are actually enthralled with Caye Caulker more than anything else. Frankly, one could sleep on the street in a corner of this town and retain a smile, and ALL the people on the island are helpful, kind and interesting, noit just Jessie and Jeff. The question is, therefore, are the $75 you will spend per night on a Macaw room worth it, when you can stay at several other, comparable places for half that, or a sixth of that if you don't mind sharing a bathroom.

Truth is, De Real Macaw FORGOT TO ORGANIZE OUR AIRPORT TRANSFER and once someone has happily taken your money, I can't think of anything worse! We'd arranged the transfer in advance, via email, and reconfirmed the day before our departure. Jeff assured me he'd take care of it. He did not. So we were stranded at De Real Macaw at 6:30 am, with only a half-hour to get to the airport, in the rain, with no telephone to call for help becasue the office was still closed. I ended up walking through the rain until I found someone with a cell phone to call the taxi company. This affected our Caye Caulker stay negatively and leads me to point out a few more things about De Real Macaw that need attention, so that you can make an informed decision before making your reservation:

1) The aircon units are too small to be effective and very loud.
2) The hot water isn't hot by any stretch of the imagination. This can be really bothersome if the weather turns.
3) The fridge will be set to the lowest setting when you arrive, so there won't be any ice and your milk will spoil unless you turn it up.
4) If the cats in the construction lot next door are feeling amorous, they will keeep you up all night.
5) The bathroom window had come off its hinges and banged all night once the wind picked up.
6) No one ever checked up on us or bothered to ask us how we were enjoying our stay or whether there was anything we needed or wanted to talk about. This is a basic courtesy in the hospitailty industry and doesn't cost anything. We felt aignored, frankly, once our credit card had been swiped.

The point is, this bad review could have been easily avoided. In fact, if only the airport transfer had been taken care of, as promised, I'd never have bothered writing this. De Real Macaw seems to have come to that point in an establishment's history when the owners are resting on their laurels, not maintaining the property more than is absolutely necessary, and think it's fine to sit on their veranda all day smoking cigarettes, ignoring their guests who are paying inflated prices. There are many other places on Caulker that are just as nice as De Real MacFlaw for much less money. Why pay the relatively high price of $75 per night if you're not going to get your money's worth and the folks charging half that will treat you twice as good? If you do decide to really Macaw, I recommned arranging your own airport transfer. But yes, the island is awesome and the people are all wonderful and despite the above flaws, we had an unforgettable time.

Maybe I had too high an expectation, but I was a bit disappointed with Real Macaw ...

Firstly the good parts - the location is handy [but then the island isn't exactly big, so it's not as important as it might be elsewhere], the rooms are very clean - the beds were made everyday and the rooms cleaned to remove all the sand that we tracked in, and the property is very attractive both inside and out.

But ... one of the rooms we stayed in had bunkbeds which rocked everytime somebody turned over, or got up - so the other person was woken up. The other room we stayed in didn't have bunkbeds, but the beds were fairly noisy/squeaky which didn't assist in getting a good night's sleep. I also had a problem with operating the showers - one of them didn't seem to produce hot water at all, the other one sometimes did and sometimes didn't. The worst thing was that the bathroom in the 2nd room wasn't properly separated from the bedroom [the partition only went to about 6.5'] - so my roommate and I took turns going outside whilst the other one used the it !

In summary, ok, but could be a lot better.

Once the artist across the street with the Bob Marley music shuts down for the night it's quiet...until he opens again in the am. So, quiet from 10pm to 9am give or take.
