The Hay-Adams hotel garners praise for its exceptional service, with staff members who consistently go the extra mile for guests. Its atmosphere oozes old-world elegance and luxury, complementing the refined dining experiences. While opinions on value are mixed, due to occasional noise and comfort concerns, others justify the cost during peak times. The rooms are celebrated for their luxurious touches and comfort, despite some remarks about noise and size. Its location is a highlight for sightseers, being close to key historical landmarks. Cleanliness is top-notch, and amenities, including the dining options and location, receive high marks, although the fitness center is considered modest.

I think this is the nicest hotel in the city. The service is top notch and the rooms are beautiful. Ask for # 818 as it has a king bed, a lovely fireplace (not operational, but very pretty) and beautiful decorative plasterwork on the ceiling. I just spent three nights there, and it was such a treat, I really hated to leave it. The air handling system is very quiet (in fact, the quietest I've ever not heard), the bed and chair are comfortable, and the housekeeper kept me well stocked with tissue, free water and toiletries. The marble bathroom has a hand held sprayer in the tub and the shampoo, etc. were of high quality (don't remember the brand) and generously sized. The staff are all polished and well spoken and very professional.

The Lafayette restaurant has been moved to the 9th floor in a space that overlooks the White House and St. John's church. The dinner I had (bass with wild mushrooms) was tender and flavorful and finishing it off with a pot of hot chocolate really hit the spot on a cold night. I definitely plan to return there for dinner the next time I'm in DC. I wish I could stay at the Hay every time I go, but, unfortunately, my budget won't allow it. I will return some time though, when I can afford a special splurge.

There was some noise from protesters in Lafayette Park across the street, but it wasn't very loud and never went on during the night. (My room faced St. John's church and was only a few feet from where the protesters were embedded). That was the one concern I had going down, and I was pleasantly surprised that it never became an issue.

If you're driving, head east on H St. NW (one way) and make a left onto 16th street. 16th is blocked off, but there is plenty of room to pull into the drive in front of the hotel.

Everyone wore masks, tables were well spaced in the restaurant, and staff were careful to maintain social distance. I can't think of a single drawback and would highly recommend this hotel to anyone who is looking for a special place to stay.

We were fortunate to be guests at the Hay Adams for six nights. What an elegant hotel! You feel like you're relieving history as you enter the magnificent lobby or walk into your perfectly appointed room. Our trip to DC was one of the best vacations we have had in part because of our concierge Leire Falcon. I have never experienced such personal and caring consideration by a concierge in my life. Leire has the most charming personality. She was full of intelligent helpful hints on how to organize our days. From the moment we arrived, she met us with warmth and joy. When we wanted to see monuments, she arranged a driver. She reminded us to use the hotel car. Each time we returned to the hotel she would greet us and attentively listen to our “review” of the day. And our feedback was always excellent – because when it came to our meals, Leire and her colleague Franziska Boelke had made all of our dinner reservations. What an outstanding series of dinners – The Dabney, Le Diplomate, Fiola Mare, and one of the best at this hotel - the Lafayette. I have recommended this hotel to everyone I know and will certainly stay there upon my return. They will become your home away from home in DC.

Dear Gailsik, I am very glad you were able to spend such a lovely visit with us, and experience the best the city has to offer. I have shared your kind words with Leire, who loves and takes great pride in her work with all of our guests. She is honored by your praise. Among the incredible restaurants of this city that you enjoyed, I am so pleased you were able to dine with us at the Lafayette - a dining experience not to be missed! We are delighted to be your home away from home in DC, and look forward to welcoming you back "home" very soon. Sincerely, Han Bruland VP/General Manager

My husband and I spent three night at The Hay-Adams to celebrate his birthday. The staff and level of service was the best we've ever experienced. The concierge was incredibly helpful and assisted us with getting tickets to some of the museums we wanted to visit...which was a challenge due to the timed entry requirements at the time. The location of the hotel is fantastic and you can easily walk or ride their hotel bikes virtually everywhere. The hotel bar didn't disappoint either with great cocktails, cozy ambience and that DC buzz of people making deals and getting things done.

One of the US' leading, old-school hotels for sure. It's location opposite the White House is great, but admittedly a HamptonInn and other hotels are that close, too. But: You can actually see the White house from the restaurant, and of course from the rooftop. The rooms are pretty old-school with a lot of plush. But unlike "new" or "modern" hotels, they're not worn. Instead, they charm you with the power of DC and other comparable cities in the world like London, Paris or Berlin. The quite tiny bathrooms, another relict from the hotel's age, make up the space with high quality and comfort. There are not many hotels in large US cities in which the shower made my day. Staff is great, as you can and should expect. And do not miss to visit the cellar bar "Off the record". No more words needed.

Just finished an amazing Mothers Day Brunch at the Hay Adams Hotel and couldnt wait to write my review to let the world know about this first class experience. As we drove up to the front of the hotel, we could see the White House and the Monument. We both felt in awe with this view but then the true five star quality of this hotel reigned. The beautiful double doors to the hotel opened and we entered the world of elegant luxury. There was not only a doorman to let us in but then a greeter to greet us upon entering the hotel and to help to guide us where we were going. Multiple staff members wished us good morning as we were escorted to the elevated to take us to "The Top of the Hay". There are no words that justly describe this amazing rooftop. It is windowed all the way around which allowed us to see everything in Washington, D.C. that we wanted to see. The whole room was decored with amazing linens that captured the theme of Mothers Day along with beautiful floral arrangements on each table. The buffet was amazingly displayed. There was a champagne tower, food presentations including mozzarrella, fresh spring vegetables, salad items, prime rib, steak, lamb and fresh fish. The pastries and dessert buffet was so beautifully presented I almost felt guilty eating it but boy I am glad I did. There was flourless chocolate cake, lemon meringue, popsicles with marzipan, etc, etc, etc, etc. The service was extremely attentive and impeccable.

It's not as though the Hay-Adams needs another rave, but I was logging in for a less favorable review of another property, and figured why not. Nothing is overlooked (except the White House) as their little cards declaim. The beds are comfortable, everything is elegant, the toiletries smell amazing, the service is impeccable, the restaurant is perfection.
I was here most recently on a sad occasion, in town for a funeral, and not in the mood to accept any imperfections or problems. Luckily, there were none. Total elegance and grace and opulance and comfort at every step.
It was September '21, and Covid policies were in place and reasonable. Staff were always appropriately masked and kept their distance as needed, but were available (and, unlike everywhere else, the hotel did not seem understaffed). There was some convention or gathering happening, so there were always a lot of people around, but it never felt crowded.

It's just nice when something one knows should be in the highest quality in the world really lives up to expectations.

One of the most iconic hotels in DC. As soon as you walk in, you immediately feel the nostalgic vibes. The bellman and doorman immediately greet you and throughout your stay, the entire staff calls you by name. Check-in was warm and friendly. Our room was very nice and cozy. The showers were great and slippers provided were very soft and almond color. The Lafayette Restaurant is 100% top notch with elegant white crisps table cloths, window dining, fresh flowers and crystal chandeliers. The food here is amazing and I highly recommend you give it a try. Please call ahead for reservations because it fills up quickly.
The Hay Adams location is directly across the street from the White House, Lafayette Park, and ST. Johns Church.
Special Kudos to Sean( the Bellman). He was the first person we met coming in and leaving. He's so kind and courteous and we will see you again! Also, the front desk staff are truly amazing. Sorry I didn't take your names, but one was in training and the other young lady was assisting her. Kudos to the team and team work.

I chose this special hotel as part of our 50th anniversary celebration because I wanted the best. It was a good decision because we were impressed by everything the hotel had to offer. The location is tops, the decor is beautiful and classy, and the service couldn't be beat. It's a beautiful historic mansion, and staying there made us feel like royalty.

The staff really aims at serving and pleasing the guests. They are very professional at all times, yet they are very friendly.....always with a smile. They made us restaurant reservations and secured us tickets to a museum that required early morning same day bookings. Moreover, they have a house car that drove us to our restaurant on 2 occasions.

I chose the "park and play" package, which entitled us to valet parking and breakfast. Breakfast is served in an extremely elegant room, and the selections on the menu are all wonderful. As a very early riser, it suited me to take advantage of the complimentary coffee served in the lobby during very early hours (before breakfast is served).

Visiting Washington D.C. is an experience in itself, but staying in the Hay-Adams makes that visit perfect. We plan to stay there again in the future.....I really can't imagine staying elsewhere.

Where do I start when beginning to sum up my experience at the Hay Adams? I’ll start with this, I travel frequently for work but often book based on convenience. As long as it’s safe and the location is where I need, great. It’s not often that I book for pure indulgence, but after two years of Covid blighted travel, I decided it was time to tick something off of my bucket list. I’m a big US politics geek and being able to look into the President’s garden was a huge draw for me. And well, the hotel itself just looked divine. On arrival I had the wonderful surprise that I’d been upgraded to a room that overlooked the White House. I think I actually let out a little squeal akin to Carrie Bradshaw spying the Eiffel Tower from her balcony. I cannot, CANNOT repeat this enough. Never in my life have I checked into a hotel room and not wanted to leave. I found myself dithering and procrastinating regularly, not wanting to leave the room because of that view. You have been warned. I even slept with the curtains open just so I could see it as soon as I woke up. I didn’t even see the complimentary chocolate White House until I came back into my room later that evening because I’d been too busy gazing out the balcony doors. Everything in the room has been meticulously taken care of. I never want a garish bathroom light that blinds you in the middle of the night again. Dimmer switches all the way from now on. As for the staff, everyone was a joy, from Michael who floated seamlessly from front desk to concierge desk and in the fabulous bar, Robin the bathrobe dream maker, all of the doormen who remembered me by name, my darling waiter Geovany who brought not just the most amazing eggs royale, but also words of wisdom and life advice. Love you! My love for all of the staff was only matched by my obsession with the bathrobes. So much so that I purchased one which was beautifully giftwrapped and is currently on it’s way back to London with me now. When travelling with others we tend to be cocooned within our own little world, but the benefit of travelling solo means you get to know the staff, you ask them for advice on what to do and what to see, and in this instance have museum tickets sent to you within moments of discussing it. Do make sure you engage with these ladies and gents, they know what they are talking about. I’d intended this to be a one off splurge but how am I ever going to stay anywhere else in DC again now that these guys are like family? Consider me a regular.

The staff were all lovely, helpful, genuinely welcoming. It is a beautiful hotel. The room was well decorated, high quality linens, furnishings, etc. However, a five-star hotel should at least provide a good night’s rest. You can hear every door slam, strangely hear upstairs neighbors despite solid construction, the mattress was uncomfortable, and so much light leaks around all sides of the door that the room was not close to dark at night. Breakfast was very good, there were lots of staff, but with only 6 other tables filled, service was incredibly slow. This was a real splurge, and it wasn’t worth it.

What kind of question is that? The riots at the Capital were inexcusable and I don't know anyone who would accept rioting and destruction as a good thing...no question about it. I do stay at the Hay Adams when I am in Washington the guests that I see are different and of varying types (although I don't follow the guests around demanding they discuss with me their political beliefs). No one seemed to mind when St. John's across the street or the alley at the Hay Adams was set ablaze this summer (or the obscene spray painting, defacing, and destruction of the Hay Adams and many other places in the area). The only way to protect the employees then was to shut them inside. What do you think happens to employees when you shut down a hotel? They lose their source of income (salary and tips). How is taking away a person's income protecting him or her? I understand the frustration about the riots in the Capital and throughout the summer but please stop to consider the waiters, waitresses, maids, chefs, wait staff, bellhops, desk staff, car attendants, bartenders, laundry staff, maintenance, and countless others (many of whom are not seen) that work very hard and make the Hay Adams the wonderful hotel it is. They cannot just lose their incomes. If you are planning a stay at the Hay Adams then ask a question. If you are making a political statement, write to the Times.

We would be happy to offer car service from BWI - a sedan would be priced at $225 for that trip. A taxi or Uber from BWI is also a convenient option, and will likely cost around $100. We are looking forward to welcoming you to The Hay-Adams! Please feel free to give us a call at 202-638-6600 and ask for the concierge if you would like to arrange for car service, or if you have any additional questions.
