Date of Stay: Wednesday Aug 23 & Thursday Aug 24th, 2023 Location and price were our primary focus when we booked Generator Hotel for our Roguetrip to Washington, DC. The location isn’t too far from all of the big attractions, but just enough out of the way to be relaxing. The hotel is on a hill and on the corner of a residential street. There is a bit of a challenge getting ‘to’ the hotel for check in, because the side road is small, narrow, full of cars, and one way only. So for visitors coming for the first time, it can be a bit of a challenge. There is no pull up spot for check in.
The hotel is very cute and modern looking on the outside it is a lovely boutique-style hotel. . There is a large outdoor patio around the hotel. When you enter the lobby, the front desk is located at the end by the coffee bar. In the lobby, there are several little privacy rooms along the wall. The room was very generous and spacious. The bed is comfortable and clean with no sign of ‘visitors’. We requested extra pillows & towels – which were not present in the room when we arrived – we had to ask for them and an Ice bucket down in the lobby. The bathroom is very spacious, and clean -with no issues. The shower is at a decent height for tall people. There is an outdoor pool – it opened after 10 am and closed at 8 pm when we were there, so we were not able to use it. The exercise room has a few pieces of equipment with a lovely mural of Muhammad Ali. There is a lovely Mexican restaurant inside the hotel – which looked like it would be a good place to eat.
Like many hotels these days, hotels were very expensive. – but this was actually the cheapest hotel we could find in DC, and it wasn’t a bad price. They have a tiny underground parking lot – probably a dozen spots or so. The cost of parking was fairly high. I got sticker shock with that. It would be very cost-prohibitive for many people for longer stays.

This is not your traditional hostel. It is a hotel with lots of rules and a few dorm rooms tacked on. I stayed in a 4 person dorm. The room itself was very spacious and had under bed lockers for some things (not big enough for a bag) . There was a table with 2 mirrors for getting ready or working. The bathroom however was ridiculously small. It did have everything you might need shower, bath, toilet and sink. It was missing a hand towel or paper towels to dry hands which was annoying. There was no body wash or shampoo provided not a problem as I had my own but it is usually provided in hostels. There is no set quiet hours so if you get unlucky with roommates they could be quiet loud. The reseption team on my arrival was quite rude and really didn’t want to be there but this got much better throughout the week. The restaurant is reasonable but not much for people who are gluten free, sane with the cafe. One of the rules is no outside food or drink. When I checked in I was told no outside food or drink anywhere on the property and I had to either use there restaurants or eat elsewhere. As my stay progressed I saw people eating outside food in the common areas or on the patio so am very confused about this rule. This is no self serve kitchen like in most hostels. There is a self service laundry $2 to wash $2 to dry. They will change notes to quarters at reseption.

Not as per the photos or reviews! We recently stayed here on a trip to DC mainly on the back of the photos and positive reviews online however we were left completely disappointed both by the quality of the accommodation plus the service provided by those on the front desk.
We had to change room due to an incredibly strong smell of something akin to damp and even with changing room the only way we could make it tolerable was by leaving the window open 24/7…not ideal!
We requested housekeeping on each day of our stay however despite reception admitting that this was recorded against our room it wasn’t done on two separate occasions.
The attitude of the reception staff was incredible and not in a good way! We often caught them rolling eyes when we asked a question or simply feeling like we and guests generally were a total inconvenience to them and we are aware that our travel agent has been trying to make contact for nearly two weeks now but is also not receiving any response
Strange smell in reception and rooms were not furnished to the quality shown in pictures online however I will say the bed is comfortable

The good -Staff is friendly -Clean rooms -Hot water/Water pressure -Location-close to DuPont Circle
The Bad -In Room Service is Every 3 Days so No Refilling of Toilet Tissue, No Clean Towels, No Clean Linens, No Emptying of Trash, No Making of Bed -No Coffee in Room and Cafe Doesn’t Open Until 7:00 -TV works sporadically-There were Times that I could only get CNN and ESPN -No Facial Wash Cloths -No Shampoo, Conditioner or Lotion - only a combination body wash/shampoo in shower -Rooms are Very Dark with Very Little Lighting Other Than the Window
I do not feel that this was worth the charge of over $300/nightly for a single room

The room was very clean and tidy and was kept so during the whole stay. Lesbia, the cleaner for this floor was very attentive and always ensured I had water and that my towels were clean and that the bathroom was spotless.
It would have been even better to have some tea-making facility in the room

I stayed in the “hostel” rooms for this visit. As an older person let me share my experiences and leave you some tips if you decide to try this.
First of all, it works: the hotel is in a great location in DuPont Circle, near lots of restaurants, shops and the Metro station. The hostel experience (my first) was fine: the room was clean, my roommates were quiet and respectful, and the bed was comfortable.
Its a little strange sharing a bedroom and a bathroom with strangers but ultimately I got what I wanted- an inexpensive place to sleep in a comfortable setting in DC.
Some things to be aware of: There’s nothing in the room besides the beds except for a couple of stools and a small closet. No TV (probably a good thing), no comfy chairs and not a lot of space. There is a common area on the main floor that has couches, chairs and tables to hang out at.
Because of the size of the rooms I felt more comfortable making calls from the lobby or outside, not in my room.
There’s a single, lockable drawer to stow stuff, but if you feel unsafe you need to bring your own lock. I didn’t, but felt safe and nothing of mine was ever disturbed.
Bathroom- you get one towel and as they all look the same need to keep track of it. There are no glasses in the bathroom, so you should either bring a water bottle or grab a paper cup someplace and bring it with you.
There’s no eating in the rooms- due to allergies, but it also keeps the smell and crumbs away. A good policy, and there’s a restaurant downstairs and plenty in the neighborhood.
Again,if you’re traveling alone and looking for an inexpensive bed in DC and willing to cede a little privacy, this is a great alternative. It was probably a little more than a third of the price of a standard hotel room in the same area.

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts with us! We appreciate you shouting out cleanliness, comfortability, cost effectiveness, and location. We do apologize if the dorm space was more bare bones than you expected. In our private spaces, we do have a TV, more seating, a fridge, etc., but for the sake of noise complaints and allergies, we don't have many additional ammenties in the dorms. In the future, if you ever need extra towels or water, feel free to ask for more at the front desk.We hope to see you the next time you find yourself in DC!

Bathroom needs reworking, shower heads are way to low for average size person.
Two mattresses in a king bed which push apart is terrible.
Having no alternative to the very overpriced parking garage to an already pricey room really made the stay poor at best.

I stay here whenever I'm in DC. It is primarily a hotel (directly across from a Hilton) but has a few 4 bed dorm rooms which are well-kept, clean, have en suite bathroom, and curtains for privacy. Staff is very helpful and attentive, headed by the great Tina, who can fix anything.

My partner and I stayed in DC for a few days. The location of the Generator was great and there was a garage (paid) on site which was helpful since we drove. It was challenging to find the rate for the parking online. The staff was very friendly and kind. The beds were comfortable. The rooms aren’t large but it was perfectly fine for our short trip. Downsides- the room did not have enough light. We had to use the bathroom light at night because the room lights were very dim. Also, the body wash had a very masculine scent and was bit difficult to pump out. It would be nice if there was a cleaner/less strong, more unisex scent.
