Akaroa Criterion
Clean tidy basic comfortable
Great views
Fresh milk for coffee- very unusual these days - also met requests for it to be light milk.
Great condition for an older hotel . Basic amenities and hairdryer provided. Soap shampoo conditioner and moisturiser - Not toothbrushes/toothpaste.

This was a lovely place to stay and disappointed we didn’t stay a day or two longer. The room was spacious and comfortable with lovely crisp white linen and a heavenly bed. The room was also well appointed with just about everything you might need for a short stay. Location is just a few meters from the sea front, bars and restaurants very close but without any noise or disturbance. Everyone was friendly and helpful. If in the area again we will definitely stay with you.

This is exceptional value for money and in a prime location. Very friendly and helpful owners. Great oversized rooms.Clean, tidy and very presentable with the benefit of a small kitchen area with fridge. The free bottled water is a nice touch. We stayed on the top floor with a balcony looking out across the harbour and the expansive views. The early check-in and late check out are a particularly good feature. Its the only place to stay when visiting this beautiful town.

Absolutely perfect for private time during the Christmas break. We stayed from Christmas 🎄 Eve until the 27th of December. The room was everything that you could wish for and then some. We were in room 4 which overlooked the Daly Wharf, the harbor and beautiful gardens in-between. The room was so spacious and beautifully decorated, style that reminds us that the mixture of French and New Zealand heritage is something that has been cherished in the best way. We usually travel a lot overseas as well as around New Zealand so Akaroa offered the excellence of French hospitality in a priceless corner of the world. The Hosts were gracious and kind which made the whole visit relaxing and joyful.

What a beautiful place to stay! From the lovely email from Felicity approving my request for a upstairs room to the minute we walked into the office, the owner Murray treated us like old friends. The room was beautiful, incredible sea views, fully stocked with all we needed including plunger coffee and biscuits 😀 Beach towels in a bag and cute patio chairs topped this place off. Very very quiet sleep despite the location in the middle of Akaroa. Would definitely stay again. Thank you guys so much!

Hi Kellymarc Thank you so much for such a great review of your stay with us and we do appreciate the detail you went in to over the little extras we offer as well as your customer experience of course :) The Criterion is our home as well so it is important to us that we offer our guests everything there is available and the knowledge of this beautiful town and surrounding countryside. We would love you to visit us again in the future and we look forward to seeing you in Akaroa. Warm regards Felicity and Murray

We stayed in room 4 for 2 nights in early February. Located on the corner of the property you get fantastic views across the water. There’s a balcony with seating and a table for drinks or a bite to eat. The stores, bank, tourist information office are all within a minutes walk. Nothing was too much trouble, we asked if there might be a cool bag for picnics and offered a choice of two. Proprietor operated and highly recommended. And if you can get room 4, go for it!

One of the standout features of this motel is the genuine helpfulness and friendliness of the personnel. Felicity went out of her way to help us, which we appreciated very much.
The location within Akaroa is great (very close to amenities, but not on the main road), and the units are spacious, immaculate, and restful. Our experience is with the upper units, and the views and afternoon sun make spending time in those rooms a pleasure. (Possibly the same could be said from the ground-floor units, but we don't know those.) We had great sleeps. We've stayed at the Criterion several times, and its high standard has been consistent.

I initially booked this as a single room and was given a fab free upgrade when I invited, mobility challenged, Mum along.
After an amazing crayfish lunch at Nins Bins we arrived well after the office closed on an autumn evening. They couldn't have made our late arrival easier with a personalized welcome letter, and the heater and lights on in our luxurious room. Awesome location, service, and accom!

Ticks the boxes.
A friendly person checked us in.
Spacious units. Ours had a balcony but very small - still it was nice to open the doors and sit inside by the door (only room for one on the balcony really).
Clean and tidy.
Just about beside the fishing wharf.
A short walk to the other end of town.
We'd stay again.

Room was very large, with a table, sofa, chair, and even an extra small bed in the corner. All rooms face the ocean, and we were looking to get a 3rd (top) floor room. Room was clean and modern, and we were offered milk and bottled water for free.
Wi-Fi worked well - no stingy limits. Only annoyance was that there was not a power outlet near the table.
Many shops and restaurants within a block or two - don't need to drive once you get there!
