Detailed Reviews
We spent a couple of nights here over New Years. The room was very good for a pub stay. A single balcony wraps around all rooms. There was no room service menu but the hosts couldnt have been more helpful, providing a chilly bin and wine cooler for our snacks. Big comfy bed and adequate en suite. The Grand Hotel has tab, pokies and a nice beer garden. If there was one small negative, a bar fridge in the room would have been awesome. Overall, a very enjoyable stay.

We went to the Bar & ate from the Bistro menu. It’s the only affordable food we found in Akaroa. We’re not into French food or paying $50 for a rack of lamb. This was a great relaxed bar, friendly staff, good & reasonably priced food. They even put free pizza on the bar for patrons, it was Friday night. Would go back.

The food was tasty and well presented, although the menu choices were limited. Staff were friendly and the service speedy. The place is up for sale, hence the need for a makeover which I am sure it will benefit from.

Popped in today and oh the whitebait fritter sandwich was delicious. We ate a another couple of places in Akaroa and this was by far the best service and food including value for money. Loaded with bait, beautiful fresh bread you must visit.

My friend and I went here for an evening meal on the recommendation of the host at our accommodation. She said this is where the locals go!! The menu was limited, including the pizza menu nevertheless it was a bit latish, we had already ordered a wine so we opted to stay and have a pizza. We wanted vegetarian but we asked to add mushrooms, capsicum and olives...not an outlandish request I would have thought! The kitchen apparently had no capsicum, the 'olives' was some crumbled rubbish that only vaguely resembled olives and the mushrooms were not fresh. Consequently the pizza was pretty horrible, lacking taste and dry. We only ate it as we were hungry! Our own home- made pizzas are 100% better than this excuse for a pub meal.

We popped here for dinner thinking the menu looked good. Unfortunately a live band was playing so went to sit outside to get away from the noise and the outside shelter was leaking so we got constantly dropped on. I ordered the salmon pizza as I usually love a good salmon pizza but was really disappointed. Firstly couldn’t cut through base so had to go get a steak knife and even then was difficult. Too many capers which was really all I could taste, not much salmon. Almost tasted like a GF base as was so tough. Very overpriced for what it was. However chips were good and garlic bread was good so came away feeling full but disappointed had wasted money as had saved hard for this trip.

Pub open the latest. Received a warm welcome & was cared for immediately. Ordered off the bar snack menu (fried food variety); fried chicken & potato wedges were delicious. Charlie was a great bartender and helped us out before closing.

This is an extremely noisy hotel with gigs running right beneath the bedroom. The service is nonexistent. We were not advised of the gig, and got no acknowledgement, let alone a reply, to our complaint. The location while OK is away from the village centre and right on a big car park.

Clean, tidy and value for money. Lovely stay at a good pub. Beds comfy and what was expected from a pub. Lovely bar area, very friendly and welcoming barmaid (Jules was her name we think such a nice lady). Lovely bar food and well priced. Would highly recommend!

My wife and I visited The Grand for dinner last night. At first the barman (manager/owner? ) was amiable enough. We explained we were vegetarian and he said they could do some veg and rice, like a veggie curry. We had already seen there was a beef curry on the menu and made it clear we could not eat that. He said no problem and asked the chef if they could do a veg curry. At the same time he passed the chef a note.
The curry came and it looked good. I tried some and could taste beef. My suspicions were confirmed when i started chewing something that had the texture of beef. When i took it out of my mouth, i could see it was beef. Clearly, they had just tried to remove the beef and serve it as "vegetarian".
I turned round to find the barman looking at me. I told him there was beef in the curry and tried to show him. He ran over to grab the plate and hurry it back to the kitchen before i could. He then returned and flew off the handle, effectively calling me a liar and shouting "We don't do that kind of thing here." I was surprised how quickly he turned on me. I came to the bar and said i would pay the full amount for our drinks and the (beef) curry. I said i had learned a lesson and would put it down to experience.
The barman refused any money and shouted at me wife and i to get out and never come back. I think he was trying to save face and cover up what he had done in front of his friends/the regulars/other customers. I suppose he had only two options: admit what he had done; or go the other way completely and continue/escalate the deception. Sadly he chose the latter.
As for the note he passed the chef when placing the order, I strongly suspect it said something like "Take beef out".
If he replies to this and calls me the liar, I would say - why would i have tried to pay the full amount if i was trying to cause trouble? I would also say that i am a lawyer of 10 years calling with an unimpeachable reputation and i would readily give a progessional undertaking that the curry had beef in it.
Avoid this place, and go to the Madiera or Harbar instead. Especially if you care what is in your food.

the Grand Hotel at the top of the main street heading to Christchurch is your place. Big screen TV and a friendly barman Eric will look after visitors.
