Welcome. We are a small and friendly surfing lodge and relax packers set on 33 hectares of pasture and native forest located above Akaroa on the Banks Peninsula, east of Christchurch. Overlooks Akaroa village, the harbour and out over the Pacific Ocean 550 metres (approx 1650 ft) up on the slope of an extinct volcano. Possibly New Zealand's highest boutique hostel with the views to match. Friendly, relaxing, quiet, clean. Our wish is that you leave more relaxed than when you arrived. c u soon.

The only positive thing I have to say about this place is that it is in a beautiful area with lovely views. Beyond that, it was awful. The building is an old metal barn that was cheaply converted into a hostel. They used sheets as "walls" to divide rooms, and the kitchen and lounge still have concrete floors and a metal garage door as one wall. You can watch the sheets - or rather, walls - blow in the wind from the drafts that come through the outer walls.

There is also no electricity during the day - they use a generator at night for lights. If you plan to use the kitchen, hope you don't mind sharing your food with mice. We woke up to discover our food bags had been raided and much consumed by rodents. Not having power during the day also means that food in the fridge will spoil more quickly.

We got the feeling that this hostel is set up more for the people that work there and not for guests. They have seperate living quarters and lounge area (where all the nice appliances and furniture happens to be), and we felt like we were intruding in their private living space by even being there.

There is no internet for guests (although we saw the employees skyping, so apparently there is internet, but the guests don't get to use it). There is also no pool table, which their website claims to have. Also, camping is $10 per person, not "by donation" as their website suggests. Dorms are $25 per person per night, and based on the accommodation provided, I would rather have slept in a gutter in town. Seriously.

We planned on staying at this "retreat" for three nights, but left after one night and day of trying to make the best of it. Ugh.
