For us, yes we had a good break but the city lacks the impressiveness of Rome or Paris but is quaint in it's own right, the local restaurants are good as is the low key night life. A word of caution - do your duty free shopping as you fly out to Cracow as the airport at Cracow really is basic with virtually no facilities even to buy food air side.
Very pleased with our room it was big, bright, airy and spotlessly clean; looked like it had just been totally refurbished. The veiw out the window was a bit limited though as we were situated so high up and in a narrow street, (apparently the old building opposite is some famous Jagiellonian University building dating back to the 15th Century). A Continental Breakfast was brought to our room on a tray at a pre arranged time and was very good.
The location couldn't have been any better, just a short walk from the main market square, which has lots of good quality restaurants and bars. The staff were EXCELLENT, genuinely friendly and helpful and couldn't do enough for us, they even charged my mobile phone for me.
The only down sides are that to get to the room we had to climb 3 flights of stairs, not what you really want with 2 suitcases or after a days sight seeing and as the room has a shared kitchen, we had to endure the (thoughtless) people in the next room, with their 'Do you want Tea?' 'How many sugars do you have?' 'Do you want milk?' etc after they'd just come in late at night, when we were already in bed trying to sleep.
Our room had a double bed, a basic MFI type wardrobe and a couple of Ikea type easy chairs, with a satellite tv system seemingly capable of receiving every known German channel, but only the dreary CNN in English. But then again, you aren't really there for tv.
Not so good was the nightly choice between a stuffy room with windows closed or horrendous noise from the street below, well into the small hours, and the comedy pillows on the bed. Less mobile guests should heed previous comments about the stairs too - fifty steps to the second floor rooms, which could be a problem for some.
Superb location next to the main square was a bonus, although the aforementioned street noise was an inevitable downside to this.
Well worth considering, but if the minuses are important to you, try somewhere else. It worked for me though.
The breakfasts are great - can keep you going most of the day - and the staff are very friendly. Take some cash with you as there is a local tax to pay before you leave but it's not very much - just a few pounds (if that).
Can highly recommend the Nordic House Apartments, already a few people we have told about Nordic had been there and rave about them also. If you want somewhere clean, relatively cheap and central to stay in Krakow look no further.
This was was my second trip to Krakow & in my first I stayed at the Polonia. I think that Nordic House beats this particular hotel in every measure but accessibility.
The location of the hotel is great. It is just two minutes walk from the main square and close to an excellent selection of restaurants, Despite its central location it is in what is a relatively quiet street, close to the universities. It is around 200 metres from a major tram connection that is very useful, should you wish to use public transport to get around the city.
The accommodation itself is its major draw. the room that I stayed in on the third floor is massive by modern day standards, clean and tastefully decorated in a modern style. The room was very light, illuminated by large windows overlooking the street. Breakfast is served in the pub in the basement and although lacking choice was excellent and very filling.
So what of the downsides? Well first the hotel is not for the immobile. The rooms are situated on the second and third floors and food is served in the basement. There is no lift and a walk to breakfast could therefore entail a 4 flight journey! Secondly your options for storing valuables whilst you are out are limited. There are no room safes and the office that serves the hotel is only open 9 - 5.
Despite this limitations I would recommend the Nordic House as offering exceptional value for money for the able bodied visitor.
Location: Location was amazing. Steps from Market Square, right in the old town. Everywhere is walking distance. The main train station is on the northeast corner of old town, Nordic House is on the Southwest side, and that is a 10 minute walk.
Rooms: Entering the room is a breath of fresh air. Harwood floors, high ceilings, big and bright and clean. We did not have a balcony, but large windows that open up. The bed may have been the most comfortable in Poland, however the pillows were somewhat lacking. The bathroom is decent size, clean, and with a heated towel rack. Plenty of storage for clothes, and satelite t.v.. Security is quite good, as one key opens the door at ground level after hours, another opens the door to the quad area and the last is to your room.
Service: We found the people to be quite pleasant and helpful with any bookings (Salt mines, Auschwitz) although we did not require those services. We did ask about laundry when we arrived, and we were told to leave it out, but it was never done. 2 of our 4 nights were on weekends, so it may have been an oversight. However, there are no Laundromats in Krakow, and we had to take our clothes to a Dry Cleaner which cost $80 for a normal size load. The washing machine located outside our room had a "broken" sign on it. That seeemed to be the only bad expereince.
Bad: Little things that were negative, but in no way would prevent us from going back: No elevator, and we were on the 3rd floor. We are in pretty good shape, and by the 3rd day, we dreaded those stairs, especially after a long day of sightseeing. Beware if you are disabled or very over weight or just plain lazy! Also, the noise form the kitchen area if you have inconsiderate neighbors, as well as the noise from the street. we were able to close the windows to block the outside noise fine, but in the summer, that won't work, as there is no A.C. or fans and it can get hot. Also they do not accept credit cards - so if your room is not prepaid, bring cash.
Misc: breakfast was good, served in the Nordic Pub. The Pub didn't seem to be to happening during the night, mostly randoms who happened to stop in for a beer, and Nordic House residents stopping in for one final pint before heading upstairs. By the way, all the Krakow pubs seem to be in basements that look like they are on fire from the cigarette smoke pouring out the doors, a lovely stench on your clothes in the morning! Also, do not expect views form the rooms, as it;s on a small side street over looking the Magmus University, and next to St. Annes church - both in tourist books. We didn't use the stove or fridge, so can't comment on them. The room service (not food), simply come in and make the bed and drop some fresh towels off, as it's not a hotel, don't expect mints on your flat pillows!
The apartment appeared to be newly decorated and the bathroom was really gleaming with new fittings. Breakfast is served in the Nordic 'Pub' in the basement - which was fine.
The office were really helpful with any queries - particularly Lambert Krol - he is a very helpful guy who deals with the accommodation.
We fell in love with Krakow - Its massive market square is great for an evening drink and watching the world go by. We went to Aschwitz - incredible experience. Also the salt mines - a little bizarre but well worth it!!
I really want to return to Krakow for the Christmas Market. My tip is to book the Nordic House apparment - but keep it to yourself!!!!! You'll love it.
This spottlessly clean and comfortable bit of heaven is just steps from Crackow's Main Square, where there is enough to keep any tourist busy for their entire stay. My kudos go to Christopher who arranged so much in the way of tours, etc.
He was the one who told me of the flat 50zlt (about $18.00USD) taxi fee from the airport. The electric car or walking tours by some really good guides, and most importantly arranging for pickup to Auschwitz and the Salt Mines, famous for the rock salt carvings and statues.
My room was Huge. It could be divided into at least 2or 3 smaller rooms and still be very comfortable. Breakfast is served every monring even Easter, when I was there. A full plate of ham and cheese, fresh rolls, a soft boiled egg, and Tea or Coffee.
The only thing I did not like was having to go up 3 flights of stairs.
Jan, the owner, and also a very nice and helpful person, told me that a lift would not be allowed because the building is so old.
I left information with Christopher about stair lifts, like in those old houses that rich people want to live in, but not shelp up the stairs. I will be going back to this beautiful city, but I will have to see if there are any hotels with ground floor rooms or a lift!
There is plenty to see and do with lots of restaurants and cafes in the close vicinity. We picked up a free walking tour on day one to get our bearings and pick up general information. We'd already planned to do Auschwitz-Birkenau, the salt mines and Schindlers Museum but we added to that the museum under the main square, which we knew nothing about until the walking tour. This was very interesting and interactive which made understanding it very easy if you speak English or Polish. As a group of four (two couples) we found it cheaper to arrange our tours by taxi but there are plenty of places where you can book tours or ask the hotel staff to do it for you. They also have deals with some of the restaurants and if they book your table for you you'll get a free drink or similar included in the price.
Overall Poland still offers good value for money generally and I thought the Nordic Apartments were great.
