Detailed Reviews
22 of our team stayed at the Motel Russell 5th December to 6th December 2020 as we had a work function in Russell. The proprietors Wendy and James just could not do enough for us. Due to our group, they also gave us an early check in and a late check out. The Motel is spotless and the rooms large, we all stayed in different size rooms from one queen bed to two bedroom units. They also have a fantastic pool area which they allowed us to hold our after function drinks. Truly they could not do enough for us. If you are looking for really well priced accommodation with fantastic service i would so recommend Motel Russell. The Motel is about a five minute walk from the town centre, but we were all happy to just stay at the hotel and given the chance would stay there again. Highly Recommended

We stayed here for one night on our way up North, I have never had as good as service anywhere and I have stayed in lots of hotels across NZ and the world! The rooms were late due to unforeseen circumstances but they gave us a box of chocolates to apologise, their gorgeous puppy was the highlight for the kids, and I was able (with amazing help from them) to wash and dry all our holiday washing.
A lovely family run business. We would def come back.

We have had another AMAZING experience at Motel Russell and will be back next year for sure! James, Wendy and Linda are the most amazing hosts and absolutely make Motel Russell the place to stay when we head to Northland! The motel is cleaned to an exceptional standard, the pool and BBQ area is amazing and so relaxing and the hosts could not be more accomodating. It’s just a short, flat walk to the centre of Russell for dining out and perfectly positioned for a night at Russell Boating Club at the end of the road. Highly recommend - the best kept secret in Northland!

Our family has just had the most incredible week staying at Motel Russell and we cannot recommend the facilities and hosts highly enough! Wendy, James and Linda are AMAZING hosts - unbelievably friendly and helpful, super accommodating to our needs and truly genuine people.
The accommodation is warm, quiet and comfortable, and is kept spotlessly clean at all times - as are the rest of the facilities (including a gorgeous pool and BBQ area). It was also brilliant having access to a washing machine and dryer to use while we were away.
Located at short, flat walk to all nearby restaurants, shops and the wharf, Motel Russell is ideally situated. It was the perfect family holiday and we
will definitely be back for another relaxing week at Motel Russell soon.
Thanks once again James, Wendy and Linda - we absolutely loved our time here with you all!

Motel Russell is conveniently located on the main road into Russell. Despite it being on the main road, it is very quiet. A mere five minute walk from the centre of town makes it the perfect location to stay.
Its friendly owners are welcoming and proud of their achievements since taking ownership of the property.
The room we stayed in was modern and comfortable with a VERY comfortable bed.
The swimming pool is nice and the grounds well kept.
We'll most certainly be back.

We booked a King Studio. The room was of a good size. The bathroom was very good and looked like an 'accessible' bathroom. Plenty of room. The bed was large and comfortable. Everything was very clean which is great. Lovely crisp sheets. Small improvements however could make a big difference. Why would anyone still use one ply toilet paper? It just means everyone uses twice as much so no overall savings. No hair dryer or tissues which are pretty much standard these days. 'Penny pinching!' Also the room had a terribly put together table, come bench, come fridge and utility holder. It was a mess. No room for anything and a bit of a disaster DIY I expect. A chair is placed at each which assumes this is a table but no way could fit a plate in front of you. Hardly enough room to serve anything. No sink area which is my view is a significant hygiene issue as it means cups and glasses etc are washed in the bathroom hand basin. Small improvements could make a huge difference. For the price we expected better especially relative to other places where we have been staying.

Long overdue for an update. For a family 2 bedroom unit, it’s small and cramped, there was barely any room between beds in single bedroom and the double room was much the same, the only heating was 3 small heaters, the lounge area was very cramped. Description of units is very misleading,
The manager / owner was nice and accommodating with heating the room and lights on with us arriving late, and saying hi when we did arrive. For less money you get a way better 2 bed apartment in paihia.

The room was clean and had everything we needed e.g. microwave, milk in the fridge, coffee, wine glasses. All credit to James and Wendy for having a folder of local information for us to read. The King sized bed was great and I had a great sleep in it. I liked the two pillows. We appreciated having two fans in the room as it was humid. It was a shame we didn't get to check out the pool.

Now called The Captain's Motel. Really good value and very clean and crisp. Decor is lovely and bedding, towels etc were excellent. The 2 bedroom accomoatuon was very roomy for 4 females and all of our luggage. Highly recommend this as a place to stay. Wish it had been warmer so we could have enjoyed thd beautiful and lush pool area.
