What a charming olde pub/hotel. We had a lovely, comfort room overlooking the patio. We set up the table at the window to have room service for dinner and enjoyed a bottle of wine we’d picked up in Marlborough on the way. This was Michaela’s (the manager’s) suggestion as there are no BYO restaurants nearby as we’d hoped.
There were lots of little thoughtful touches in our room that you don’t necessarily see in more expensive hotels - nice.
The complimentary breakfast was perfect for us.

+1
I picked this place just because of the name! But my choice was good one!
The room is big and the bed is big and comfy. Old fashioned country style room with wooden beams and rustic fittings. The room even comes with complimentary continental breakfast! You would not get that these days!
There is a small area at the end of hallway to wash your cups and use the microwave.
A pub downstairs with a big courtyard.
Reasonably priced for the room you get. Highly recommend.

We stayed 3 nights in a so called delux king room.
It was winter and quite cold in Nelson. Despite this the heating in the room is turned off until 5.00 pm every day.
The room had no view, just a couple of tiny windows covered in net curtains overlooking the driveway. The room received no sun.
We asked for a coffee one morning, which took 40 minutes to be made. We bought a coffee plunger after that.
Cleaning was paltry, the room wasn't vacuumed, a dirty glass was missed.
We were told where to park, but another guest had parked over the 2 available parks so I parked nearby. I was rudely told by staff that I had to move the car.
In summary, our worst travel experiences.

My family and I went here today for a Mother’s Day meal treat. When we arrived, yes it was busy but to be directed to our table with hand signals was a poor start not to mention finding people sitting at our clearly labelled reserved table having a coffee! Table wasn’t wiped down between them and us so that was black mark number 2 (doesn’t get better from here).
Waited a solid 15 minutes before we approached the bar staff to give a drinks order and was told to take a seat “we’ll get there soon”. A waitress finally arrived, looked at us and shrugged and said “sorry” before taking our order.
When the food arrived nearly an HOUR later, there were only 3 meals instead of 4 and I had to go in search of cutlery, napkins and condiments. The fourth meal arrived a solid 8 minutes later. I really wanted the food to redeem what was a lacklustre experience so far but it didn’t. The fish was heavily battered and very oily and the “chicken, Brie, almond filo parcel” was extremely light on chicken and the almonds weren’t there at all. Plus one of our meals had a hair in it 🤢
During the whole time we had been there, we were not approached once regarding further drinks and not asked if our meals were ok, HOWEVER the table right next to us were asked TWICE!
We decided not to grow any older waiting for dessert and when paying, we were presented with an extraordinarily large bill. Half of it was items we certainly hadn’t ordered. No apology, just “that’s why we like you to check it”. Throw me an apron and a notepad sweetie and I’ll do the rest of your job for you while I’m at it.
Here’s some advice for free - when you are short staffed, restrict your bookings and don’t take walk ins. Look after your bookings, they’ll usually come back. But we won’t be.

We parked our camper overnight in the carpark. It costs $10pp but for the cost we got a $20 voucher for food and drinks. We had friends to see in the morning so came back for lunch and ordered the sticky chicken wings, oh so delicious! Sweet, savoury, a little Asian flavor a little heat...nom, nom. Seriously recommend!

We loved this place as it’s quiet and outside of the main CBD so easy to get in and out. On the night we stayed it was quiet and no issues with diners trying to park in the accommodation parking lots.
Loved how cosy and quaint it was, with a very fancy bathroom and bed. Good speed Wi-Fi. The added brekkie items were good value for the price point given that a lot of hotels cost more and won’t offer that. It was some boxed cereals and fruit. Plenty of milk.

This pub was across the road from our own hotel but we chose to have a drink and dinner here on successive nights.
Nice big garden bar for the warmer weather includes a large size chess set for the intellectuals amongst us.
Inside is all old beams etc in English style.
Good selection of wines and beers and menu had good variety. Really enjoyed the steak and ale pie.
It's wee bit of the beaten track in a mainly residential area but it's handy for cycling tourists to wet their whistles - the bike trail goes right past the front door.

My friend and I went to look at staying at this place and had a coffee and cake. The staff were so unfriendly and unwelcoming and the place had changed a lot from the rustic character it used to have.
The coffee was terribly burnt.
I needed to access the internet to look at the accommodation options and arrange a few things so asked for the wifi password and was told it’s only for in house guests.
They lost a lot of $ that day as we left and will not be back, nor did we bother making a reservation for dinner as previously planned.

Room Tip: The place was dead quiet so I don’t think they can afford to be so rude. Avoid the coffee!

This place was character charm from the get go, staff warm, rooms unique and big, free washing facilities, breakfast did the job and if you wanted more you could eat downstairs and they had gorgeous gardens. Pub food divine and the coffee wasn’t bad either.
All we can say was we had a great experience from the get go
Would go and stay again
