We visited Nelson for the weekend of 5/8th of March. We left Nelson 20 years ago and thought we would stay in a place we were familiar with when we lived there.The hotel is a run down shadow of its former self. The accommodation is adequate but the meal service and standard of food is appalling. I won't bore you with the tedious details of the bad service and poor quality of the food as other guests have already pointed this out. Needless to say we will not visit this place in any future visits to Nelson.

I stayed here overnight with a friend twice in a week, book-ending a tramp in the Abel Tasman. I thought it was great value for money - clean, big, comfortable rooms in a busy but peaceful English country pub-style small hotel. Nice grounds and reasonable food on offer in the pub downstairs. Lovely staff, particularly Aroha the manager. Toby the dog and his duck toy a highlight.

We visited as a large group. Sadly, the food was disappointing, fish and chips was very ‘average’, no choice for desert, just chocolate brownie, which was very oily & served with a minuscule ‘squirt’ of cream! A very different experience than previous visits, we had expected better. A very ‘average’ experience.

Ordered our meals and drinks to wait nearly one hour. No advance warning of wait time. Soup was cold. Duty manager couldn’t give a toss really. What a shame as lovely setting but service slack Today. Out of town visitors, not good enough.

Obviously no one wanted our money as after getting a beer and a wine we found a table then went and found menus and after looking through a very average menu and no one coming to take our order even when i caught the eye of one of the wait staff we decided not to eat here. There was a lot of chatter between staff over the counter but no one interested in serving us. We have been going to that pub for a number of years but the menu just gets worse with each (i guess) change of chef. We paid for our drinks and left. No one even thought to ask why we were leaving. This was early in the evening. No other customers except one table. We are locals but will not go back.
