Be Aware!! We arranged our 3 night/4 day booking (via email) with Estrella (Star), she appeared friendly and willing to work in a fly fishing trip for me. There web site led us to believe we would have a good time at their lodge. Note: We did all of our research for this trip on a cell phone with poor internet while in Cuzco acclimatizing for an Inca trek. We canceled our trip upon entering their (Jungle man Expeditions / Abundancia Amazon Eco Lodge) hostel in Iquitos Peru. Estrella arranged for a taxi to pick us up at the airport and drive us to her hostel. We tried to pay the taxi but Estrella very rudely took the money stating it was hers. When we entered the hostel we made a quick assessment and decided we would rather spend the night at a hotel. We politely told this to Estrella who stated we agreed to stay there and must pay her 55 Sole. We had a very bad feeling about Estrella at this point, but decided to go along with her and stage our bags there while we searched for better options. Note: This was a very strange and possibly dangerous situation. I have spent a career living and working with foreign military in very austere locations; but would never want to subject my wife to that. The hostel and most likely the rest of the business (lodge) was very messy and unprofessional. Estrella met us wearing a night shirt with no shorts and gave us some kind of rudimentary brief on what the trip was about using some old laminated photos. Estrella appeared to have bad hygiene as was evident by the state of the kitchen and table she briefed us off of. The hostel really looked like it needed some maintenance. The room had no windows, the linen was dirty, the beds were falling apart with bad mattresses and the bathroom was dirty with no towels. We were not even sure that the hostel was even a legit establishment; there was no sign depicting it as a hostel and we could not find it on an internet search. See photos of exterior. Based off of the initial assessment we decided that it would not be safe to do a trip with Jungle man Expeditions. We are sure they do not have an adequate contingency plan (radio or evacuation measures) for emergencies such as snake bite, possible allergies or dangers that are associated with the amazon. Estrella was definitely overcharging us and the website was probably “smoke and mirrors”, were you think you are staying in a lodge, but in realty a living in primitive conditions. She was charging us $750 for what other companies are charging $300 to $400. We lost our $200 deposit plus 55 Sole to this scoundrel. Do not waste your time or money!!

Food was dreadful. Room had a nice view but leaked like a colander when it rained and was far from clean. Diego did his best but the owner was unhelpful with any problems dismissing the grubby wet bed as "a sign of the Amazon" will never return.

Hello, I just saw this review and I think you were at some other location, we are several hours into the jungle by boat. We have traditional leaf roofs which we keep in good repair, buying the leaf from the local villagers. Very occasionally the leaf can leak, but we would promptly repair it to not have damage to the mattress. We do not have any specific view rooms as the entire lodge faces the river. Our food is excellent, beautifully presented and is included in the price of your lodge stay. We have never had anyone named Diego working with us. We We are a smaller family operated lodge with a few nearby villagers who work with us also. We are near the Rio Napo on the Mazan River. Miguel is the guide who provides the many guided trips. Please review this experience and our lodge listing. Thank you!

My partner and I stayed at the homestay in Iquitos, also run by Miguel and his wife, Starr, for more than a month. From day one we were greated as family and welcomed in the couples home with open arms, at the same time they always respected our privacy. The room and house was nice, clean, homely and cheap. Both Miguel and Starr have been extremely helpful in giving us advice and helping set up meetings with people we needed to find for a research project we worked on. Two times Miguel brought us to the jungle where we stayed for around 5 days both times. First time we went to visit his mother in a small village and second time to stay in Starr and Miguel's beautiful lodge in the primary rainforrest. The lodge is located in the most beautiful surroundings, completely isolated from human life, the nature is stunning and there is plenty of wildlife. Miguel was always very helpful, flexible and happy to share his knowledge about the jungle, the traditions and beliefs. He tought me how to fish (amazonian style), how to take proper mud baths in the river, took us to meet local curanderos and many times assisted us with translating spanish. I highly recommend meeting and staying with Starr and Miguel. They are both warm, caring, humorous people who put great dignity in their work. They love the jungle and first and foremost always want to share this passion with their guests.

One of favorite memories from a two month trip in South America was time spent on the Mazan River at Abundancia Ecolodge — the food, the sounds, the people — it is truly a special place!! Being so remote (around a 3 hour boat journey from Iquitos), I wasn't expecting the food to be as tasty as it was, but each meal was another surprise of homemade crepes and fruit, freshly caught fish, pastas and more. For the four days that we were there we had the entire place to ourself and it honestly felt like our own little jungle oasis. Early morning canoe rides for bird watching, piranha fishing, hammock lounging, river swims next to the pink dolphins, guided walks through the thick trees learning about every plant's medicinal purpose... I could go on and on. Many thanks to Starr, Miguel and the rest of the crew for making our trip so special, we hope to return to you one day in the future!

Miguel was a hunter in the forest for 20 years and has huge experience of that environment. Additionally he speaks perfect English and can communicate his knowledge, wisdom and enthusiasm to westerners. It is truly a privilege to spend time with him. The lodge is located in a remote and magical position at a bend in the river facing an island. The facilities are simple but totally appropriate to this remote unspoilt environment. The hospitality is overwhelming. All this combines to create a totally unique experience.
