We stayed here in the converted barn for 6 nights. We had the whole barn to ourselves, both upstairs and downstairs. Downstairs has a queen size bed, small kitchenette, bathroom, concertina doors that open to the garden and outdoor setting, small lounge area, large smart TV. Upstairs had a large bedroom, concertina opening windows that have a view of the main lodge, large ensuite with jack and jill basins and a heated towel rack, lounge chair, wardrobe, and smart TV. Breakfast was included and our host Andy offered 3-4 choices for a cooked meal, yoghurt and fresh fruit, a couple of cereals, tea and coffee.
We loved the space, the cleanliness, the shower was hot, the bed reasonably comfortable (although the pillows were a bit flat and probably due to be replaced), the cooked breakfast that was just enough and delicious, the garden/orchard with birds and rabbits, the proximity to town, local shops, and attractions while feeling you were out in the country with the peace and quiet that brings.
We felt that the place seemed to be lacking a bit of TLC though - the outdoor setting is in need of re-coating, the windows and skylight need a good pressure wash, the garden is overgrown in places, the pool is not in use, the clothesline needs to be restrung, the kitchenette has an electric frypan and a microwave, but doesn't have a hotplate or stove, it does have a dishwasher, the refrigerator is not full size and only has a small freezer space.
The main house offers a pool table, books and DVDs. The dining room is a warm space that includes some interesting art and a chandelier.
Overall, we enjoyed our stay here, and appreciate how Andy looked after us during our stay, particularly still cooking breakfast on Christmas Day.

Lupton Lodge We had an extremely comfortable, spacious room at the front of this hotel and were able to regroup after a lot of travelling around. The host was a very good chef who made dinner we had ordered from choices we made before our stay. It felt very relaxed and special to dine in the attractive dining room, it was quiet and peaceful and gave us a break from running around looking for a restaurant.
The next day the younger ones of our party went diving at Poor Knights. We had not realised they would bring so much dive gear in the other couple’s car and that they were going elsewhere afterwards, so we somehow had to get all the gear and four people into our car. We tried to hire another car but couldn’t find anyone willing to rent us a car that we were not bringing back. When we told our kindly host, Andrew Raven, about our dilemma over breakfast, he could not have been more helpful. He rang around and got us a rental from a local firm which meant we could put all the gear into two vehicles. That made a huge difference to our comfort on the long trip from there to Auckland.
We were extremely impressed and would gladly stay again at Lupton Lodge.

Lupton Lodge is a quiet and restful stop when traveling north of Auckland. The house has several separate rooms and the property also includes two large rooms in a 2-story building separate from the house. My brother and his wife had the upper room while my husband and I had the lower floor. Both were attractively decorated, and overlooked the pasture where cows and sheep peacefully munched grass. The host Andy had offered us a dinner option which we took. We had great Moroccan Lamb with interesting sides and a fabulous dessert. Breakfast was equally delicious. Andy was an excellent host giving us great advice for the travel ahead.

I could probably cover this off in 2 words “highly recommended” but I think a bit more is expected. We only stopped one night on our journey north and were thoroughly delighted with Lupton Lodge. We stayed in the Green room, downstairs in the converted barn. It was spacious, clean, bright and well appointed with an adjacent patio area for good measure. The rural setting, only 11/12 mins from downtown Whangarei was charming and peaceful.
Andy was an excellent and helpful host and breakfast was a real treat with all dietary requirements catered for.
Whangarei is not famous for its accommodation but the Lodge ticks all the boxes and yes, is highly recommended.

Thank you Andy for making our 2 day stay so wonderful. We had the ground floor studio which was fairly large and had everything we wanted in a B & B. The room was clean, nice and quiet and the bed very comfy. I do however, regret not having done enough research though, because I did not know that you also offered dinner ...otherwise we would have opted to have dinner in on the first night! But your breakfast was sumptuous & delicious, so that made up for it. Thanks also for the lovely tips on what to do around the area. We will definitely recommend Lupton to anyone planning a trip up that way.

Although listed as a bnb there was a kitchen and I would have taken food had I known. Lovely large room with superb amenities. The patio outside was lovely to sit in and enjoy the rural setting. Only thing missing was the cows in the paddock on the other side of the fence! We had a superb breakfast. During the day there was a lot of road traffic but it was very quiet at night. By far one of the best places we've stayed at.

Away from the craziness of the city, this beautifully restored historic farm house and separate barn are set amongst huge old fruit trees, olive trees and chestnuts. Cows and sheep graze in adjacent paddocks and the property is surrounded by old stone fences. There is a heated swimming pool which was refreshing. The Lodge is located close to the lovely Whangarei Falls and not far from the beaches and walks if Whangarei Heads. We stayed 3 nights. Breakfasts were included and we had various omelettes and other delicious options with lots of good coffee.

We had a fabulous stay at Lupton. The rooms are beautifully decorated and have all you need in terms of kitchen requirements. Great bathroom with a good shower as well. The gardens are lovely with lots of fruit trees, oranges, lemons, limes, plums and grapefruit. You will wake up to birdsong and cows mooing. Nothing is too much trouble for the host. Andy, chef and owner, will whip you up a fabulous breakfast and or dinner, my suggestion being the Thai green curry. Careful attention paid to dietary requirements as well. There is a tranquil entertainment area with books and cds and a lovely dining area to enjoy your meals in. Well worth a visit to a beautiful part of Whangarei. Thank you Andy. We will be back.

Only having 5 seems to few,i'd rate it 8 out of 5,with one star off for poor cell reception. Wifi is good though,as was the excellent room we used for two days. Peace & quiet and the rural flavours make this a gem along with Andy's great service. Breakfast was great & we did have a Kitchen for evening meals. They will cook for you if required..

Hi Caroline, there are taxis that can get you to Lupton Lodge from the bus station but as we are located in the countryside we generally recommend that people have their own car. If you want to be able to explore the local area or go out for dinner then you would need your own vehicle.
If you are going diving there is a shuttle that can take you to the dive operators and bring you back to Lupton Lodge at the end of the day.
There are several rental car companies in Whangarei if you would like to rent a car once you get tot eh city.
If you have any further questions please let us know.
Kind regards
Karen & Andy @ Lupton Lodge
