Detailed Reviews
Restaurant review: I went with a group of friends so luckily sociability was more of a priority for me than the food and this was the saving grace for the night. Flames in my opinion cannot be described as an atmospheric dining experience as touted. For the non discerning diner who is happy with pub style fare the menu served, it was questionably passable. Those seeking atmosphere or a romantic intimate setting should look elsewhere. That aside the staff were pleasant. Overall the standard of food was not up to basic chef standard which makes me question if there was a trained chef in the kitchen.. My chicken Parmigiana and accompanying risotto balls were deep fried and overcooked resulting in dry fillets rather than succulent as described in the menu. The tomato sauce was missing and it was covered in what looked like a crinkled yellow sheet of plastic type cheese. The accompanying piece of broccoli and bok choy provided a welcome relief to this desert fare. I managed to get through half of the meal only. Complaints abounded from others who complained of tough steaks, dark brown chips, coleslaw instead of seasonal salad and the desert menu looked more suited to a child's menu being lots of over-sauced and cherried icecream and a panacotta that was tasteless and resembled a very solid door stop .What was served was at odds with the description on the website and I failed to see where any real or imaginative cooking or presentation had taken place. It all seemed more like freezer to deep fryer fare and this is fine if those were our expectations and the menu priced accordingly. If this review seems harsh its not meant to be, I wish it were the opposite but hopefully it will lead to reflection and improvements. its just that I can tell when food is not prepared with care and love and its somewhat irritating when ingredients are seemingly trampled on, they deserve better. Suffice to say, I will not be frequenting this restaurant for a 'dining experience' again. Unfortunately no photos were taken as despite the poor quality of food the company was excellent and we all had an enjoyable time catching up.

Was given top treatment from the moment I walked in. I was part of a group and I arrived ahead of the others. Manager and staff went our of their way to welcome both myself and the others in the group after hours and throughout our stay. Many thanks team.

This is the first time I've stayed in Whangarei and I won't be going anywhere else when I come back.
My queen room was fantastic, super clean, lovely touches everywhere. Great size, excellent wifi reception. Bed and pillows just right. Beautiful views with palm trees. Every staff member I encountered were so helpful. I had a 5 star quality vegetarian dinner, expert made cocktail. Breakfast was exactly the same, perfect barista coffee brought to my room in the morning and no extra charge for room service. I could tell that all of the elements have a lot of care and thought put into them. Thank you for the stay and I will recommend to anyone I know who comes this way.

The room is very spacious and well appointed with a wonderful view. We were given a warm welcome when we arrived and the staff have been great. With several dietary issues our needs were catered for and tonight’s Valentines dinner with live jazz music had been an absolutely wonderful highlight of our stay. It you are on North island and there are stunning views and forests, ancient trees, and kiwi birds to see alongside Hundertwasser’s Art Center, and his toilets

Friendly accommodating staff, let us store our ebikes in a locked garage - which we were grateful for as a tropical storm was passing through . Roomy king room with comfy bed and air con made for a comfortable stay, good sky channel selection. Wifi a little stilted viewing netflix. Short walk to little shopping centre and small New World. Great views.

Went to Flames restaurant for dinner with friends. Worst meal ever. Four of us had fish and chips, two got 2 pieces overcooked and 2 got 1 piece of fish. We were given a $5.25 discount on two fish meals. Two others had the $47 scotch fillet, obviously cooked on a dirty grill and both steaks were different sizes. My entree of scallops were grossly overcooked, bacon burnt and cauliflower puree wasn't cauliflower at all. Won't be going back ever.

Response from Raewyn Goldberg, Owner at Comfort Hotel Flames Whangerei
Responded Sep 8, 2023
Your fish were different sizes because they were different types of fish, I've never had someone sit and compare their meal sizes before. Our steaks are all weighed out to be the exact weight but different types of cooking eg rare /med well, may result in them coming out in different sizes we have never been accused of overcooking fish and chips before and this was not something that you mentioned on the night. We note that it is not the first time you have eaten with us and it was a similar display of dissatisfaction last time. We therefore apolise and understand that our menu/cooking is does not suit your style and we are completely understanding of you not wishing to return. Wishing you all the best and thanking you for your feedback, which we do take seriously.

We recently stayed at the Flames for a long weekend. We had to book via telephone and the staff member we talked to was very accommodating to fit in our family to one of their last available rooms.
Every staff member we interacted with was incredibly friendly and professional.
The room was warm, tidy and clean. Beds very comfortable. We called reception for the additional rollaway bed and it was there in an instant.
Twice we ordered room service dinners and the service was fast with meals absolutely delicious.
Heat pump in the room was incredible. After using it briefly to warm up the room, we didn't need to use it again overnight.
Shower pressure very strong with lovely hot water.
We would definitely stay again!

I chose this hotel based on both the great reviews and it's extreme proximity to the airport. I was not disappointed.
I made my reservation over the phone and was given a great description of the room options and prices. I picked a premium room on the top floor with harbour view. On check in, Raewyn gave me directions to the car park nearest my room, and as I stepped out of my car a happy, helpful man appeared and explained he had been sent to carry my suitcase up the stairs for me!
The view from my balcony was so uplifting with white sailboats in the blue harbour beyond the mangroves, and native bush in the distance. I loved relaxing on the cane furniture set in my room. It had deep, comfy cushions and perfectly suited the tropical atmosphere provided by the beautiful palm trees and hibiscus in the garden below. On enquiry I was provided with a jug of soy milk and a coffee plunger to use in my room which I appreciated so much.
After settling in, I went down to the bar for a cocktail, where a very friendly girl expertly made up a wonderful large and strong aperol spritz for me, no problem at all. I then enjoyed relaxing in the lobby reading the paper and looking at the art collection of black and white photographs of famous people from the 1960's and 1970's. I did not dine in, but easily found a tasty and well priced Thai restaurant nearby.
After dinner I returned to my room, the evening was cool but the heat pump efficiently created a cosy warmth. I wanted to take a bath, but couldn't figure out how to get the water to switch from the shower to the bath tap. A quick phone call brought another helpful staff member to my room who had it working in no time. After a relaxing tub, it was time to collapse into the spotless white sheets on my soft and comfortable king size bed for a much needed sleep, after a big day driving down from the Hokianga.
In the morning I couldn't face a busy restaurant, so made a phone call to see if it was too late to get breakfast in my room. I was met with "of course not" and literally within 10 minutes there was a knock at the door and a perfectly presented tray with delicious sourdough grain toast, cereal, fruit salad and yoghurt was brought in.
Check out was fast and simple, another strong man carried my suitcase from my room to the car, and an easy 3 minute drive to airport completed an ideal stay.
At no time was anything too much trouble, all the staff were so warm, kind and friendly. I was so welcomed and taken care of, while travelling alone and feeling somewhat vulnerable. I couldn't recommend the Flames Comfort Hotel more highly. Thank you Raewyn and crew, I will be back no doubts.

The staff at Flames Comfort are very accommodating, its been a pleasure staying each time. I stay here regularly for work and highly recommend this over others in Whangarei. The rooms have great views over the harbour, there is a great pool area and the restaurant cooks great meals (try the bacon wrapped chicken with pilaf). There are also great conference facilities and the Lava Bar looks like a perfect function area set in the outdoor garden

If you are looking for friendly, helpful and outstanding service you must come here. I traveled to Whāngarei for work and flew in late on my first night. I was met by a patient and accommodating manager who calmed my nerves after a very bumpy plane ride.
The hotel room was spacious and well stocked with little thoughtful touches such as shampoo etc... I had a wonderful sleep in the very clean room. The restaurant food was delicious and excellent quality.
I would like to especially thank Raewyn, she was an absolute star who I absolutely appreciate and I wish I could take her with me to every hotel I go to because she was simply outstanding!!
