Detailed Reviews
This motel is a freshly renovated mid century classic motel it is has around 8 rooms. Ours had a separate bedroom and was very comfortably furnished. The position is perfect with everything you need including the tourist information and ferry within a very short walking distance. It is next door to the Tipsy Oyster a great fun restaurant. The owner is friendly and helpful.

This accommodation exceeded our expectations! Originally, we were booked at an upmarket apartment that was 4x the price, decided to go for this place instead due to central location and value for money. We compared this place to our original booking and were not disappointed with our decision. The owner/manager of this property cannot do enough to ensure a great stay, working hard all day to maintain high standard, and advise on best options for tours etc. Great facilities like complimentary laundry, and 5min walk to central area & ferry wharf. Many Thanks for a great holiday!

Good sized room and spotlessly clean. Relaxed and friendly owner and relaxed and friendly dog too - always a bonus. Just a few minutes walk from the pier where the Bay of Islands boat trips depart and also from where many coach tours depart. Shops are just a five minute stroll away. So this motel is close to everything and right across the road from a scenic beach. Oh yes - powerful shower too. Recommended.

Totally my fault, I'd booked the wrong room. Reception temporarily unattended so I tried looking up stuff to see where I went wrong. Also noticed the current rates were a lot less than when I'd booked many months earlier.
What followed is a great example of how to look after a customer. Having mentioned my mistake which nothing could be done about, and without mentioning the difference in rates, John saw we had booked at higher rate. He offered a lower one that was a fair middle ground considering general occupancy (obviously still low) and current occupancy (full for a couple of nights). He also mentioning the upstairs outdoor area available to guests, so we could still sit up there with our dinner and enjoy the sort of view we thought we were going to be having.
So, pretty happy!
Unfortunately the hot water situation continues to be tricky. After learning after the last couple of visits that you need to run the water at full speed to get the hot water to come through, that's only good if there is actually hot water available. I took a near-enough-to-cold shower this morning. Luckily my partner showered last night so she avoided it. I'd also had one the previous evening and even then there was a bit of variability. If full occupancy on a summers morning saw the hot water out, I wouldn't want to be trying to have a hot shower on a winters morning.
If it wasn't for the hot water, Ala Moana gets 5 stars from me every time. It's still the only place I've never stayed at when in Paihia.

Had a great stay here, a warm welcome, also discounts offered for the local boat trips and restaurants when booked through owner. Room was comfortable and clean with small patio overlooking the small car park, but the bay is literally the otherside of the road, so you could sit on the beach. The kitchen area was well equipped and clean. The local countdown was only a 10 minute walk away. The main town was only a short walk away, as was the quayside for the ferries to the islands or Russell

This motel is was ideal for us, and we relaxed looking over the Bay of Islands waters at sunrise. I even had a swim twice, it was warm enough even in April. Unit had everything we wanted, very clean, wonderful host

We recently stayed a few nights at Ala Moana in Paihia, New Zealand. It was such a lovely motel. We had a one bedroom unit that could easily sleep five, so comfortably accommodated the three of us. There was plenty of room but had a comfortable and cosy feel that made us so glad we chose this motel. John the proprietor is such a lovely man, friendly and helpful even booking our cruises for us. He even provided us with other places to visit that we didn't know of, including things that would be accessible for our mother who was on a walker. The motel is right across from the bay and only a few minutes walk to the wharf and shops. A delightful place to stay and I would stay there again in a heartbeat if I revisited the area. Thoroughly recommend this motel!

We loved our comfy room, watched the Paihia Xmas parade from our patio. Walkable to everything in Paihia! John is the best host, very hands on, helped us book "Hole in the Rock" and snagged a discount for us.

This motel is very centrally located for the wharf and other amenities. To be honest it is rather dated and needs a bit of a makeover however it is very clean and tidy and staff very welcoming and friendly. The rooms are very functional and have a good kitchenette which is well equipped. It needs a more homely feel and a woman's touch to make it look more inviting and can be done easily. Parking is right in front of the units and only one step up which is good for less mobile and older guests. Would I stay there again, yes without doubt.

We stayed 3 nights in this motel which couldn’t have been in a better location - a less than five minute walk from the shops, the wharf, tourist info, restaurants. A beach was literally across the road and although we couldn’t see the water from our room, we could hear the waves breaking. Very relaxing! The motel is next door to a pub and you CAN hear live music but it never went on later than early evening and it was the kind of chilled out music which made you tap your foot gently and enjoy it in the background. The motel itself was clean, well supplied and John, the owner, was exceptionally welcoming and helpful - always ready for a chat. We really enjoyed out three days in this lovely motel in a great little town!
