Detailed Reviews
Overall a good stay. We were in a twin room with shared bathroom. Definitely think they need some more showers and toilets located throughout the hostel. There was only one upstairs and there was soooo many products like razors and shampoo bottles in the shower too. People should clean their stuff up or it should be emptied daily by staff. Only issue we had here was parking. Our car got blocked in by someone who stays in the hostel and had gone to work... we were delayed almost 2 hrs because of this so lucky we didn’t have a flight or anything. The girl on reception was lovely and knew who’s car it was so she sent a message to the owner. But she didn’t reply... We Could tell the staff member felt bad. But An hour later a gentleman who works there asked us what we were waiting for and we explained the situation, he then went to get the keys from the owner to let us out. Thankfully he did and we could get on with our day. So just be careful where you park and book a room with your own en-suite if you can. 😂 Otherwise good price and nice people!

Booked a private double bed room which was comfortable and spacious. Room had everything we needed for our stay.
Located in the township. Close walk to the wharf & shops.
Only issue is the parking. Only a few available onsite otherwise there is off street parking but has to be moved at a specific time. This is also a backpackers so there are shared spaces available & kitchen for cooking.
Staff were friendly and helpful.

I stayed here for a week in November. While the weekly rate was the cheapest around, the hostel was dirty and smelly. In a dorm room of 5 people, our floor was not vacuumed once and our bin was not emptied once, despite it overflowing. The kitchen smelled too. The management was friendly and the price cheap, but overall not the best.

Great vibe, great price. I felt at home. I arrived late in the evening, but the owner waited for me. Full of young happy people. There's also a hot pool, but I didn't stay long enough to try it. The kitchen is big and fully equipped. The bathroom facilities are well distributed. The location is perfect, just a couple of minutes from the maritime station where all boat and bus tours/trips depart.

What a fantastic place to stay. We had 3 self contained rooms, all beautiful and clean.
The manager was very helpful.
Nothing was a problem, great meeting the different people staying there.
The bbq area was set up is a great location for many people to sit around.
Very handy to town.

We found the hostel facilities here to be perfectly decent but our two night stay was really marred by the bad attitude of the owner. In every interaction we had with him he was rude, unsmiling and weirdly accusatory and hostile, even though we had done nothing wrong and had nothing to complain about in turn. Other staff were friendly and helpful but with so many lovely places to stay in Paihia we'd recommend avoiding the bad atmosphere at Centabay Lodge.

Avoid this hostel if you can.
Booked and paid for 1 family room $140 and didnt get much sleep. People screaming and shouting into the early hours, walls wafer thin, rooms hot and humid, bathroom dated and in need of upgrade.
Overall, feel (in comparison to other accomodation) it was waaaay overrated. You dont get what you payn for in this instance.

Centabay lodge back packer hostel accommodation in Paihia was alright. When I came with my family for a visit and for
Accommodation the white guy owner/manager was rude and aggressive communicating to customers. He doesn’t like to greet and smile to customers I felt intimidated and sad. The room was average, the bathroom was average, the toilet is dirty etc. The bed wasn’t comfortable and the room get hot in the night but there is fan though. The owner/ manager is very stingy and unwelcoming and rude.

I've stayed in many backpackers hostels and have always got what I booked but not this time. My Booking.com confirmation clearly showed a room with two pairs of bunk beds and a single bed in a 'dorm for 5 people'. My booking clearly stated 'single bed' I was told 'we do not offer specific beds, you get what's available'. NO. I get a refund (which I did for 2 of the 3 nights I had booked) and go elsewhere.

Booked this place for one night since this was the cheapest place I could find in Paihia, and I guess you really do get what you pay for. The staff were rude and condescending, my room was cold and dirty with rubbish across the floor, and after going into the common room to warm up I found myself surrounded by people heavily drinking, smoking weed and vaping indoors. I didn't bother hanging around after that - found myself a much nicer place to stay the night.
