Just completed a lovely trip to Tarlton’s Lodge. The location is stunning, the hot tub on the patio is private and pristine and the room is very quiet and comfortable. What makes the place special, however, are the many thoughtful personal touches you get from the hosts. From good pre-trip communications, to daily snacks and beverages and cleaning services, recommendations on restaurants and tours and the warmth with which it is all delivered. We felt more like old friends than first-time customers. Would stay here again in a heartbeat. It was our favorite accommodation while touring New Zealand.

We had a lovely time here, from our warm welcome on arrival, through to saying goodbye. The comfy, peaceful room and spa with a view were excellent. The location was great - just a short drive (or 15-minute walk) to Paihia's beaches and cafes. Each day we came home to an impeccably clean and made up room; complete with restocked goodies and super soft towels. Would definitely stay here again.

Firstly the location is to die for, it’s an escape within an escape. The hosts Peter and Katalina were very warming professional and accommodating. Our room was serviced daily and meticulously. We were provided with water and coke in the fridge, home made cookies that were replenished daily along with tea and coffee (multiple ways). The bed and linens were fresh and a delight to return to at the end of each day. The towel warming rack in the bathroom is also a nice touch and the rain head nozzle to shower with is also very nice.We can recommend a stay here. You will not regret it.

There was smoking by other guests on the property. The smoke drifted into our room and triggered my husband’s asthma.

The “Lodge” description was misleading. The units are converted from a basement in a house. The view is obstructed because the foliage has not been trimmed. There were a lack of amenities. The room is overpriced. It should be listed as an Airbnb; not a Lodge.

This is not a location for anyone with mobility issues as there are tight, steep stairs going down to the room.

And there are rules as there might be in someone’s home. Don’t eat in the room. Don’t stain anything with turmeric. Make sure you have a shower and clean thoroughly before getting in the hot tub or you will be charged for any cloudiness in the water in the hot tub when you leave.

The reader should be assured that this guest's description does not accurately describe Tarltons Lodge. Consider why this negative review is out of alignment with the hundreds of happy and satisfied guests who have written rave five-bubble reviews both before and after this guest? It is clear that she is trying to damage our business and reputation with her negative and untrue comments. We have no idea what would motivate her to do this. We are extremely disappointed to read her comments. We work very hard to make our guests' experience extra special, as evidenced by our Trip Advisor Choice Award, which states we are in the top 10% of hotels worldwide.

Wonderful relaxing stay at Tarleton's Lodge. My husband and I enjoyed the peacefulness of the location, proximity to everything we wanted to do, and the beautiful views from the balcony. The hot tub overlooking the water was a great way to unwind at the end of each day. Everything was very clean and comfortable. We enjoyed chatting with our hosts and appreciated the little extras they thought of- the homemade cookies in the room were an especially welcomed treat!

Our host Peter was so welcoming when we arrived.
He greeted us, then took us down to our cozy, private studio room where a hot spa with a spectacular view of the Bay of Islands awaited us.

The room was beautifully decorated (I loved the Victorian lamps!) and felt very sumptuous and decadent.

Wonderful walk-in wet room, with a luxurious rain head shower. I loved that there were good quality toiletries provided, and plenty of towels, plus waffle robes in the closet.

Tea and coffee machine, and drinks/snacks were made available to us.

Comfortable bed, with good quality linens. Heat pump/air conditioner.

Our room was lovely and we noted how impeccably clean it was, both inside and the outside area around the spa were spotless.

The spa water was CRYSTAL clear which is important as in other places we've stayed, it has not been. This was a real sign to us that the owners take great pride in what they do.

It's a 1 minute drive to town and there are taxis to get you home from the numerous wonderful restaurants and bars safely.

These folks have gone to great trouble to present a cozy, private and romantic retreat for couples to relax and enjoy a break from the world.

We had a wonderful stay and would love to return again.

Thank you so much for your hospitality.

If there is anything that can surpass the location and views of Tarlton Lodge, it is the hospitality provided by our hosts Peter and Katalina.
This is a truly special start to our trip to New Zealand.
The greeting to enter the Waitangi Meeting House at the Treaty Grounds makes this the perfect way to start a visit to New Zealand.

This place is a hidden gem nestled in beautiful paiha. This place combines elegance with amazing customer service with a view to die for. Everything is very clean, bed is super comfortable and the linen is also very clean. Dont be put off that there is no kitchen because who wants to cook when your on holiday plus paiha has a huge amount of restaurants and places to eat you will be spoiled for choice. The shower is awesome . The hot tub is crystal clear and so clean, after a day of adventuring and being out on the saltwater the investment of getting the private hot tub really pays off . Warm , inviting and since it is an adults only it's quite and super relaxing. If you need to get away from your busy schedule, life or your children or just need a break this place is for you ,we will be booking again for our 13 yr anniversary or fingers crossed before then

We hade a fantastic 2 night stay at Tarlton's Lodge and it was definitely the best venue of our 5 week holiday. You certainly get what you pay for. Peter and Katalina gave us a very warm welcome with nothing that was too much trouble to make sure we had a wonderful time. The views are amazing, the location is perfect and with lots to do, places to go, restaurants etc all nearby and helpfully collated by Peter. Home made snacks, complementary wine, fruit etc all goes a long way to making you feel at home. Everything was spotless and they pride themselves on trying to be the best. Air conditioning worked well, and as a new-comer to Hot Tubs, we really enjoyed it at the end of a busy day on our private and secluded terrace.

Our hosts, are lovely people. They added many extra things, for example, fruit in a basket each morning and cookies for which we enjoyed as a special treat.
My husband enjoyed the hot tub and we both enjoyed a glass of wine and the amazing view of the ocean.
Thank you so much and may 2025 be a fruitful year!
