Wonil Hotel Perth is an intimate and stylish boutique hotel and the first opening of Accor’s Handwritten Collection brand. Wonil, a word used by the First Nations Noongar translates to ‘Peppermint Tree’ and plays an important role in First Nations culture. These trees generously populate the banks of the Swan River surrounding the hotel and have traditionally provided medicinal value to the community, a rich natural habitat for birds and animals, and shade for Noongar communities to gather under, rest and share knowledge. The wonil is a symbol of learning that inspires the hotel’s position in the community. Wonil Hotel Perth fosters a sense of belonging where guests and locals come together to live, learn, work and play with sustainable and locally sourced dining, multifunctional spaces and stunning outdoor areas with panoramic views of the Swan River. The hotel is located on the campus of the University of Western Australia (UWA) and has a unique operating model where all profits go to supporting medical and scientific research at the five surrounding universities. This hotel does not accept cash as a payment method. Credit, debit and prepaid cards are accepted to buy goods and services.

The Wonil Hotel in Perth garners praise for its exceptionally clean rooms and attentive housekeeping, situated in a locale lauded for its proximity to attractions and picturesque river views. While its modern atmosphere adorned with local art captivates many guests, a few have raised concerns about noise. The hotel's amenities and breakfast options are generally well-received, though not without minor critiques.
Service at the Wonil Hotel is often highlighted for the staff's friendliness and professionalism. However, opinions on room comfort are mixed due to noise and temperature issues, and some guests feel that additional costs for certain services detract from the hotel's overall value.

Detailed Reviews
Fabulous friendly and attentive staff are the first introduction to this intimate but very stylish boutique hotel. The balcony views are fantastic and justify the rather pricy modestly sized rooms. The streaming service is not worth the aggravation on the generous sized quality screen. The coffee table books on West Australian Aboriginal art, rock art, petroglyphs and contemporary artists are a lovely way to pass the time in the comfortable relaxed foyer/bar/ riverside alfresco. Our room was fresh, well maintained and scrupulously clean and well serviced. Now to the best bit: the food is generous and delicious. Breakfast ✴️✴️✴️✴️✴️. The Restaurant offers an uncluttered menu with a Chef who has earned the title. With all West Australian local produce, wines and spirits, art, decor … it is a wonderful Perth West Australian experience.

I had a fantastic experience. From the moment I arrived, the staff made me feel welcome and ensured that my check-in was quick and seamless. The room was spacious, spotless, and well-appointed, with comfortable bedding and thoughtful touches like complimentary water and high-quality toiletries.
The hotel’s amenities exceeded my expectations. I also enjoyed the delicious breakfast buffet, which offered a variety of fresh and tasty options. The location was ideal with a beautiful view of the river.
Parking is difficult as there are limited spaces and needs to be rebooked in advance.
Overall, I couldn’t have asked for a better stay, and I highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting the area. I look forward to returning in the future!

We found this place by accident after checking out of a low grade apartment. The Wonil has only recently opened in the Andrew Forrest owned sandstone buildings acquired from the University of Western Australia.
It’s a hotel for couples or business travellers.
The food was excellent (serving breakfast only) and a grab and go of light meals however the property does not yet have a liquor licence.
It is in a soft opening phase and we were one of only a few guests which made it extra special and quiet.
We were really well looked after by the Duty Manager Eric and we are really looking forward to our next visit.
Close to the city, perfect for foreshore walks of runs, a sailing club at the front and a panoramic Perth city skyline makes this an iconic Perth hotel location.
Tip: book dinner or lunch at Cooee restaurant in the old swan brewery building.
Upmarket and again on the water. Perfect if you like being out of the city life hustle bustle and noise.

Location:
- The only highlight is the river views, but the location itself isn't great
- Situated along Matilda Bay
- About a 10-minute walk to the Blue Boat House or Kings Park
- No convenience stores or supermarkets nearby
- A 9-10 minute drive to the CBD
- Quite inconvenient as you'll need to take Uber for most outings
Room:
- Paid extra for a river-facing room, but it was underwhelming
- Clean and spacious room
- Free WiFi
- Complimentary tea and coffee in the room
- Shampoo and body wash provided, but they aren’t refilled
- Ironing board, iron, and hair dryer available
- A microwave is also included
- No bedroom slippers, bathrobes, or body lotion
- No bottled water provided, which is inconvenient as you need to buy water from a supermarket
- No pen or notepad provided
- Constant door slamming from other guests is disturbing
- Loud music from nearby boat parties every evening
Others:
- No food room service, but you can order from the restaurant and pick it up yourself (they don’t deliver to your room)
- Parking costs AUD 25 per day and must be reserved in advance
- There were fireworks along Matilda Bay during our stay, and we enjoyed them from the balcony
- At check-in, you choose if you want daily room cleaning; otherwise, no cleaning will be done during your stay

Booked through Qantas through points and don’t realise for their “King River Rooms” you had to be specific about the bed otherwise it automates to a twin bed. We requested an early checkin and they said they would note that and to call the morning. Ended up arriving at 15 minutes before checkin (2pm) and was told room was not ready. I felt like because we requested an early checkin they purposely did our room last. Other people who came to check in around the same time had their room ready! Asked if there was any chance of getting our bed made into a king, got told by reception she would ask housekeeping. Saw one of the lovely housekeeping lady on the way up who told us the hotel normally rings to check what bedding configuration you want which they didn’t! In the end the lady at reception rang back and said they wouldn’t change the bed until tomorrow as it had already been made. We only stayed a night so there was no point. Room was lovely and clean, but moisturiser tub was empty.
They advertise a grab and go food and snacks available on their tv screen but when you go down there is nothing available at all. Take your own food and drinks as the rooms have a microwave.
The lady at reception on the 4/1/25 just didn’t seem genuine or seemed to care or try to be accommodating. We heard the way she spoke to some people in front of us too.
Just a little disappointed considering we booked for our anniversary and stated it on the booking. They have these open walkways so our door backed onto an open airway and stairs so being a main road you could hear sirens and cars and the wind blowing all night.
This hotel would be amazing if you got the right room with good service and amenities it says it has. Don’t bother with breakfast there either.

We can’t rate the Wonil more highly. By far our favourite Perth hotel for a staycay. The views, architecture and aesthetics are beyond compare for a hotel in this price category. Above all, the service and hospitality are faultless. All the staff from housekeeping to management work tirelessly to help to make one’s stay all the more enjoyable. We’ve stayed before and will definitely be back. Sincere thanks to K and his team 🤩

The hotel is well designed and beautifully fitted out. The location near the river is lovely and the staff are courteous and friendly. They go out of their way to help. However this can also be a problem. Our keys repeatedly randomly failed to work. The randomness suggests problems with the various door sensors rather than the cards. Staff finally solved this by giving us a housekeeping master key! Yep, effectively access to other people’s room. Further, there are no secondary locks or chains on the inside of the rooms. If you have a master key you’d be in. Our balcony faced the river and street and neither my husband nor I could find any way to latch the sliding doors. There’s a key lock but no key. Also a secured door at the end of the corridor was propped open with bricks for most of our stay. Door locking and key issues. As a woman who has often travelled alone I would not feel safe if I was on my own.

New hotel that enjoys a prime location overlooking beautiful Swan River. Location ideal if visiting UWA or family who may live in the area.
Staff are lovely friendly professional welcoming and polite.
Rooms clean and modern. Serviced daily if requested. Can be hit and miss. No instructions for coffee machine. Air-conditioning average.
Negatives.
Restaurant meals average. Restaurant closed Sunday & Monday. I was told there would be prepared meals to purchase. Unfortunately, not the case 100% of the time. As restaurant is closed no one can access a drink from the bar or in the rooms. If you arrive late be prepared to bring food or snacks with you.
No room Service for food or drinks in your room.
Parking is an issue if you have a hire car. Only a few car bays available. Guests should prebook ahead of time with hotel. Cost $25/per day for inhouse guests. If you park on the street you may have to walk a distance. You have to pay for Street parking between 8am-5pm risk of vandals. Make sure you leave no valuables in the car.
Access to nearest IGA or to a lovely bakery called Common Bread is around a 20-minute walk.
3 stars.

During my recent business trip, I stayed at the Wonil Hotel and had a pleasant experience overall. The room on the 4th floor, complete with a balcony, provided a stunning view of Swan River. The room itself was well-appointed, comfortable, and clean. There was a minor issue with low water pressure, but it was later addressed.
Breakfast was priced at $25 for a continental spread, with an extra $10 for hot items. The hotel’s location is excellent, adjacent to UWA and the iconic blue boat house. It’s also conveniently close to the CBD, easily accessible by the purple cat bus or the 950 bus.
