This is probably more like a 3.5/5, but we would only stay again for the excellent central location and the very nice tropical and ‘leafy’ feel of the surroundings not for the accommodation itself. And the parrot that ‘owns’ reception is a bit of a cutie!
We had a ‘sunset villa’, which for two nights was fine, but the small size would start to feel a little too claustrophobic for a much longer stay. The bathroom felt VERY small. When we originally booked, the sunset villa had a bath/spa in the bathroom, but they wrote to us a while ahead of our arrival saying that renovations had occurred (which look good) and baths had been removed from the villas. We were grateful for the heads up and the choice to change our booking. We chose just to reduce our stay by one night. But seeing the bathroom size on arrival, we do not have a clue how a bathtub used to fit in there!!! PLEASE can someone tell me where there is ANY accommodation in Darwin that has a bathtub option now – it seems impossible to find them, other than at Mindil Beach Resort.
We found it a bit weird that when we checked in we were given two keys BOTH of which were missing the fob for accessing the car parking. The person just said with not much care, ‘oh sorry we don’t have any fobs for you’. So for a few times when we were travelling in and out we had to keep going into reception and asking them to pull down the barrier for us to drive thru – a bit annoying. Towards the end of the stay, when I went in yet again to ask them to pull down the barrier, the person on duty seemed confused as to why we didn’t have a fob and gave me one straight away – gee thanks!
Unfortunately, what was more annoying was the hot water and the fact that the mixer tap in the shower doesn’t work at all. You get two options for temperature – boiling or freezing. It is a good thing that cold showers aren’t the end of the world in that heat!!! We wondered if this was just a first day glitch but sadly it also happened the next day. So we reported it at check-out but the person seemed to have a ‘knowingness’ when we spoke of the issue, and I also note water issues are reported in other reviews. So might be a good idea to get that situation rectified!!!!

Hi Lisa, Thank you for your honest feedback. I apologize for the issues you experienced with the parking fob and water. We need more information to address these problems effectively, and our maintenance team could have resolved them if they had known. If you return to Darwin, we would love the opportunity to host you again and ensure that these issues are resolved. Best regards, Palms City Resort Management

I have read people stating how wonderful this place is hell what a dump. This is the second time we have stayed here, this time we rented a garden bungalow, let’s start with check in, no real issues there, on entering our room we were a little dumbfounded at the lack of a decent kitchenette instead what we got was a two burner electric cook top an extremely small fridge and bugger all cupboard space, oh yeah a microwave, kettle & toaster (which blew up). Under the sink was one fry pan and one pot. The frypan pot kettle & toaster were purchased at BigW yep found the tags. Moving on to the rest of the room, the TV was positioned so high as to make watching it a bit of a neck breaker, and on the first night we discovered it was not attached to the very poor WiFi. On inquiry we were told to use our own WiFi😳. There was only one very old chair in the room, we asked for another one only to be to,d it was one chair per room. During our rather extended stay not once did any of the staff bother to clean the bathroom, I tried to keep it hygienic but for the money this mob charges, this should be done for you. They offer a buffet breakfast, which is charged at $18 per person, we tried it once and that was more than enough, the food was stone cold, for goodness sake the food warmers were not even plugged in, as for the quality don’t bother, very very poor. They have a nice pool area with a tiki bar, which when you consider just how expensive Darwin can be, the drink prices are alright. Another issue for this place is the noise factor, being right behind Mitchell Street from Thursday onwards be prepared for extremely noisy music echoing from a nearby night club. I noticed a lady complained about people smoking, well tuff luck, you do have a verandah and yes you can smoke on those, You are provided with a Sunbeam electric BBQ, which is a good thing especially if you want to cook a meal. This place is so badly furnished in all aspects and so worn out that the amount charged for accommodation is a disgrace. I had an issue where one day early in in our stay we rang the front office at 5pm and asked why we had not had anyone service our room, we were told that they had, really we had been there all day, the bins were full the bed had not been made and the floor needed vacuuming, this became the trend here, really poor service, obviously once they had your money they could care less after that. Probably the one big positive to this place is it is centrally located but that is also its negative. Unless they do massive upgrades we will not be back.

Hi There, Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts. We are a 3.5 star property and have operated under this classification for many years. If this has been advertised anywhere incorrectly, if you can please inform us so we can correct this. The room is fit out with a kitchenette which is by definition "a small cooking area, which usually has a refrigerator and a microwave, but may have other appliances". As you have mentioned in Villa style accommodation we also supply a kettle, toaster and two burner stove in addition to the BBQ located on the balcony. We have found this offering sufficient for most of our guests. It is unfortunate the toaster “blew up” during your stay but if this was bought to our attention at the time I’m sure we would have replaced this for you. Unfortunately a lot of our suppliers have experienced stock shortages post Covid so occasionally we do need to replace items from other sources. Our housekeeping team service all rooms daily (unless a do not disturb sign has been posted by the guest) and this is a light service. A full service is offered every fourth day during a stay which includes changing the bed etc. I will however pass your feedback on to our housekeeping team to ensure we are meeting guest expectations. We do offer a buffet breakfast and our Bain Marie's stay plugged in at all times but we will investigate why the food was cold on the day you dined. As we are located in the city close to lots of Darwin’s best restaurants etc. there is the possibility of noise external from the resort. Our staff do monitor this with a decibel monitor and if the volume reaches over the accepted levels we do contact the venues that this noise is coming from to ensure the disruptions to our guests are minimal. Smoking is allowed in outdoor areas of the resort (excluding the pool and outdoor café area). We are sorry to hear that you didn’t enjoy your stay with us and hope our response sheds some light on the issues you have raised.

Arrival – We knew we were too early to check in, the lady at reception did check if our room was ready though and as it wasn’t offered to call us when it was ready, which she did so that was a good start.

The Room – We had a Garden Bungalow, these are nested amongst the palms and as mentioned before quite small, however we were there for 10 days and once we had stored all our stuff never found the room to be too small, we were generally out and didn’t spend a lot of time in the room. If you are intending to spend a lot of time there is a toaster, microwave kettle and BBQ, we chose to eat at the many bars and restaurants in the area
People have commented on noise, we certainly heard none even on Friday/Saturday Nights there is a pub at the rear of the property and maybe the ‘Hotel” rooms that back onto it maybe hear something.
My only minor complaint would be the housekeeping, one day they just left 1 clean face washer on the bed and roughly made the bed, so I had to call reception for fresh towels, and to be honest all they did each day was make the bed, vacuum and change the towels, the bathroom was not cleaned once in the 10 days although they did supply plenty of shampoos and soap.

The Grounds – The pool is small but beautiful, with about 10 loungers and a few seats, the is also a bar that opens daily 2-6 and two large BBQ’s. We used the pool in the morning, and it was quite peaceful. But the afternoons got very busy.

Overall – We loved the grounds and location of the hotel and will definitely stay nowhere else on future visits to Darwin

Great location but .... the self contained garden villa we booked was mostly taken up by the queen bed, and a verandah that afforded a magnificent view of the couple making love in the adjacent villa. Self contained apparently means the absolute minimum of kitchen utensils (ie knife fork spoon plates cup gasses for 2, nothing else) minimal appliances that include a small BBQ with no BBQ tools, hardly any room to do anything but sleep and shower in the villa. Wifi was woeful, WTF in the middle of a city??? There pics of the rooms and the pool on the website are nothing like reality. Very disappointed,

We arrived late on a Friday night for a four night stay and were given a room which was very noisy. There is a bar behind the resort. We were told by the receptionist that they were full up, but within five minutes another room was found which was slightly better. We also notified the receptionist that our wifi was not connecting and were advised to come down to reception in the morning. The message we were getting was "connection failed". The next day we were given a room overlooking the pool and found this superbly better but the phone in the room was not working.
The next morning, we went to reception and asked about the wifi as we were still unable to connect. We were told the issue was with both of our phones, but we explained that we had no problem connecting in Adelaide, Alice Springs or on the Ghan train. Over the course of 3 days we were told various stories eg the wifi does not work in the dry season, it has been out for 3 months, it has just been out over the weekend. Another receptionist stated to us "they need to do something". Absolutely sure that we were being told untruths, we went out at night to use the Darwin Free City wifi. On the website it does say it is available. I then emailed stating that if was not fixed by the end of the day, I would be putting on a review on Trip Advisor. The next day I received a response to say there is no problem with the wifi and it can be seen as working as the same connection is used to connect to the wifi by the staff, and it is both our devices at fault. I also spoke to two other guests who were unable to connect but weren't worried as they had data and shorter stays, however as an international guest, wifi was important to us. The email also read that the staff were not IT experts. The staff who appeared to be equally frustrated hooked me up to the corporate network which would work in reception only and my friend on the staff network. When this was revealed to management, I heard nothing further. If you require honesty and connection to wifi, I suggest you stay somewhere else. On the plus side, our room was a good size, and a room change was given. The location was awesome.

Hi Suds, Thank you for your review, technology has been much advance, and it is really hard to say when it fails. We have Wi-Fi services for the guest and definitely it works but sometime it is hard to say when it fails on some occasion. There are various ways which affect the Wi-Fi services. I know being international tourist you need Wi-Fi for emails and contact family. Palms City Resort Management has been doing best for the Guest staying with us. We will definitely look into it. Thank You Regards, Palms City Resort Management

We had an enjoyable 5 night stay overlooking the pool area - the rooms are not overly big but have all the amenities including microwave & spacious fridge if you need them. The guest laundry is handy & wifi available(it can drop in & out).
The room & bathroom are clean. Staff were great.
The Palms is a short walking distance to various places to eat. Would stay again!

Well-maintained complex under palm trees, room accommodation on 2 floors and bungalows / villas
in a beautiful tropical garden with pool.
Central location on the esplanade, many POIs within walking distance,
but still very quiet.
Good value for money.
Excellent buffet with fresh fruit, among other things.
Good maintenance of the hotel complex
(including daily pool cleaning).
The room service, however, is
well below standard - does not take place every day(!).
Our request on the 3rd and 4th morning (of 5 nights) was only reduced (garbage disposal) or not met at all.

The Palms Resort is a fantastic low-rise hotel in the centre of Darwin. Unlike anything else in the CBD area, the Palms Resort is a breath of fresh air. From the first phone contact with Jade from reception to our check out 4 days later, we loved it. They have very reasonably priced various levels of accommodation from motel type rooms, bungalows, villas, a lovely pool, all in a compact lush tropical garden in an excellent CBD location. Level easy walking distance to lots of shops, restaurants, bars, the waterfront and esplanade. We booked a villa that included onsite parking and although the villa was not overly large it had everything we needed, including an outdoor deck area with table and chairs and a BBQ all in a private garden setting. We saw a great cross section of all ages of people staying at the property and we almost feel hesitant to tell anyone how good the Palms Resort is in comparison to other properties we looked at in the Darwin CBD area because we loved it and will definitely want to stay there when we return to Darwin and just hope they are not fully booked when that time comes.

What a place - as close a you can get to feeling like being in Bali without actually leaving the country. We had a garden villa and a hotel room opposite for our kids - it gave us plenty of space with the kids not being far away.
The landscaping that made you forget you were in a city, loved the BBQs on the villa patio and the well appointed kitchenette. Thoughtful touches like pool towels, insect spray and cutlery and crockery made it feel like home.
Each hotel room also had their own outdoor table and chairs. Couldn’t recommend this place more!

The staff were lovely and very attentive - BBQ grill was cleaned the next morning after we had used it (not after we checked out).
Parking was plentiful and I really appreciated the ability to pay a day rate for continued use of the room until our very late night flight.

We stayed here for 4 nights at the end of august - we thought it would be quiet but it was fully booked. Regardless of this the place was relatively quiet and we felt as if we had the place to ourselves. The grounds are great, you feel like you are in a tropical oasis, and the pool is an added bonus! The pool area was lovely too, complete with deck chairs and a bar.
We stayed in one of the hotel rooms, it was clean and tidy, with a comfy bed, everything you need for a short stay.
Front desk staff were always friendly and helpful too.
This resort was in a great location, right on the front esplanade, easy walking distance to pretty much everything, the waterfront and the main street in town. If anything was much further away the scooters that are all over darwin wouldn't be far away!
We will definitely stay here next time we are in Darwin :)
