Very nice apartments.....dated but clean. Wonderful views from the balcony. They fitted us in at short notice when we were stuck with no accommodation. Very friendly and helpful staff. I would definitely stay again.
Centrally located, close to bus stop, cafes and shops.

We arrived from Tasmania late afternoon, to find all ceiling fans on, but the aircon broken.
Receptionist said manager would ring us. (He didn't ) So we rang again.
The manager admitted aircon u/s and would contact the aircon company.
later the manager rang (with attitude) to say aircon would be fixed tomorrow.

Aircon was very important as Darwins daily max temps of 30+ threatened our sleep.
I checked internet, but could find no other 2 bedroom apartments available that night.

The manager refused to discount a unit falsely advertised as "air conditioned".
There being no alternative accommodation, we reluctantly accepted our fate.

Hours later we returned after dinner downtown, to find aircon fixed,
a bottle of red, a scribbled note (unsigned)
BUT NO APOLOGY.

No wonder the fans were on.

Response from Leanne M, General Manager at Marrakai Luxury All Suites Darwin
Responded Jul 28, 2014
Dear Sir, You were in a newly renovated apartment with a brand new a/c system. There was an error flashing in the control. We called the a/c people in after hours. We left a note offering you a full refund and a good quality bottle of red. We leave the fans on in all apartments so they are fresh for your arrival. I am the manager and I certainly did not have a melt down ? I am sorry you did not enjoy your stay, However I know we did everything humanly possible, I do hope you enjoy the rest of your travels. Nice location, basic two bedroom unit definitely not four star, over priced, I think your paying for the location, stayed five days, on first day reported fox movies not working, reception said they would pass it on to maintenance, didn't seem to get done never had movies for the five days, also went looking for the BBQ, when we found it, there was food & grease all over it, never got cleaned during our stay

Where do i start? This visit to Darwin was booked two weeks ago by my company and i'm here for 20 nights, for which they have been billed just over $11,000 for!!! When i saw the amount they'd paid i thought it must be a pretty good place to stay! Have read a few reviews about the joint and it really depends on which apartment you get as i presume they are all privately owned. Location is pretty good, only around 15 min drive from the airport and a 5 minute walk to the bars/restaurants of Mitchell street and short walk to the coast.

Unfortunately, that's where it ends - the apartment i'm staying in is in desperate need of some serious cash spending on it, all the paintwork is grotty and most fixtures and fittings are in very poor/dated condition except the sofa and TV which look pretty new. The fridge must of been rescued off the street as its paintwork is damaged and rusty, the worktops are also in poor condition and the oven looks as though its never been cleaned as well as missing a control button! As for the extractor fan, that was just filthy and covered in old grease stains. One of the chopping boards supplied looks as though it needs burning due to the amount of ingrained stains on it.

All the switches/sockets were covered in thick dust and the ceiling fans look as though they've never been cleaned since they were fitted!

In the hallway there is a hole in the wall which has been covered up with a piece of paper and blue-tack! The carpets have numerous burn marks from cigarettes and various stains throughout. The air con outlets are all dirty and the surrounding structure/paintwork is badly cracked. Tiles in the en-suite shower and kitchen have numerous chips in them and again are dated.

The crux of it all is i think it was last cleaned by Stevie Wonder and if id of personally paid for this id be asking for a refund!

We checked in on the 29th Dec. We were first given the keys to an apartment on level 11. As soon as we entered the apartment I could smell smoke and an old musty smell. I looked at the rooms and found stains on the sheets, hairs on the pillows. Dust and fluff clogged the air vents and coated the fans. The outdoor furniture on the balcony was rusty, broken and one chair was upturned near the door. There was a layer of dust on all the taps, bathroom fittings and there was no seal over the toilet or anything to show the apartment had been cleaned to some sort of basic standard. I went back to the front office where the Manager was outside the front door having a cigarette, I told him about sheets and that overall I wasn’t happy with cleanliness. He stated the cleaner was very short so maybe couldn’t reach things like the fans! He also rolled his eyes and said “Jesus what more do you want?” When I asked for a different room.
Reluctantly he showed me another room on level 9 which upon inspection smelt slightly better, had cleaner bathroom fittings and thankfully no hairs on pillows. None of these rooms look like the photos advertised FYI. Very deceiving. We spent the next 10 days in this room and below are the pictures of what we put up with…. Obviously I was not impressed at all with the condition of the room. My children’s beds were extremely uncomfortable/ there is literally no bounce or padding left in mattresses. The cupboards were useless in the kitchen, they couldn’t close properly. The bathrooms need a deep clean, or just to be renovated really! Towels and sheets all stained. Laundry was disgusting!! Cockroaches everywhere, in apartment before we put any food in kitchen I saw them running around bench top and into drawers in bathroom 🤢 also downstairs parking smelt gross! Parking was confusing to use as different numbers all over the parking garage. Lift doors are dangerous- the doors stopped working sometimes which is scary midway down to ground, we had to pry open the door to get out about 4 times! I could go on and on … we hated it and couldn’t wait to leave! I’m glad we had family close by so we could spend our time at their place instead. What a waste of money 🙄 never again.

Loved our stay at the Marrakai. Had a two bedroom unit on the 11th floor and had wonderful views of Darwin and surrounds. Apartment was spacious with plenty of room for the four of us. Close to all facilities and attractions so didn’t have far to walk in Darwin’s humid and hot summer climate. Air conditioning was essential and worked our treat, apartment was always comfortable. Clean and well maintained would definitely go back.

We booked this based on the website photo's. The room we were given was nothing like what was in the photo's. The room was dirty and the carpets and walls were stained. The furniture was old and very tired. The air conditioner struggled to work and was so noisy you could not sit outside on the balcony. The bloke who runs reception was unhelpful and would not listen to our complaints. We stayed no more than ten minutes, long enough to book something else, and walked out. When we tried to contact 'management' to complain we were told that 'he' wouldn't talk to us. Despite numerous attempts we were told that 'no-one' will talk to you. I would strongly advise you to look elsewhere as this place is the worst I have 'nearly' stayed in. We never got a refund for the money that was taken from our account either.

Stayed here, when we first moved to darwin earlier this year, the stay was ok, but there was never any hot water through the 5 days we were here. The room wasnt ever cleaned or towels changed - but i dont like to complain so it wasnt worth a mention on here until now...

I had booked through a website with my credit card, but ended up staying an extra night and charged it to my partners card when he checked us out. Now, 7 months later, without warning or any notice they charged my card because it doesnt look like I paid because my card wasnt used. what a joke!

Response from GM_Marrakai, General Manager at Marrakai Luxury All Suites Darwin
Responded Dec 16, 2013
Hi Louie w Thanks for your feedback although "DO NOTT STAY HERE" is a little harsh. If you had informed us of the fact you had no hot water, we would have fixed this immediately. Usually it is a case of the guest not inserting the key tag in correctly or the switch has tripped. This is easily remedied. As far as the apartment not being cleaned is concerned, you were on a non-serviced rate. Daily servicing is always available on request. All this information is included in the compendium found in each apartment. In terms of the credit card charge, if there has been an accounts error all you need to do is contact us and our accounts department will fix this immediately. You only have to ask. There was clearly a lack of communication which is most unfortunate, as it is important to us that all of our guests enjoy their stay . Merry Christmas The General Manager

We recently had the unfortunate experience of this hotel/apartments for 10 days.

These are NOT 4 or 5 star as advertised and at best 2-3 stars and certainly not worth the price tag.

The quality of the rooms are highly variable as is the cleaning standard.

On arrival we were placed in a "so-called renovated room": This room on the 11th floor was not renovated but had had a minor cosmetic superficial makeover with new cushion covers and couches. The bathrooms, kitchens and floors were dated back to the 80's. We noted crumbs on the floor, mouldy bathrooms and dirty fans. In addition the foxtel didnt work. We complained and the management dutifully sent the cleaners up - who rather than having a set list of jobs just rush around like mad giving the place a superficial spray and wipe.

The next three nights my daughter started to complain of severe itch and came out in nasty bites all over her back and legs which required medical treatment. We complained to management who at first were rather disbelieving. I demanded to move rooms and this time we were placed on the 15th floor. This apartment was renovated but again suffers from the wear and tear and bad cleaning and management issues.

WE found on moving in to this room -:
1. TV didn't work! (had to again get management up to fix it - turns out someone had plugged in an old VCR and removed all the cabling).
2. Fans filthy
3. Pillows yellow and stained and severely odiferous - again called housekeeping who dutifully exchanged them for newer ones.
4. Extractor fan peeling paint which dropped into your food when cooking (again management called who sent a handy man up to rectify)
5. Door to balcony jammed - same poor handyman sent up to "replace the pads which had become worn"

Management denied having any cause for our daughters bites however 4 days later some flowers and chocolates were delivered to our room from management. Turns out they had found a NEST OF BITING ANTS in the wardrobe of the room where our daughter was staying. Management suddenly were apologetic and no longer disbelieving. However my daughter had to have oral medication and creams for 1 week to relieve her discomfort.

Other issues:
1. Pool is showing signs of needing an upgrade and is not child friendly - the entrance is thru a narrow door up some steps which is not pram friendly as you try to fit the pram thru a doorway whilst opening a security latched pool gate. We have a 5 month old baby so we needed the pram as the seating areas around the pool have lots of ants.

Overall we would have moved to another hotel but my husbands work had paid for the accomodation so moving was not an option - however we would never stay there again and we don't recommend anyone else to either.

The problems could be fixed if some serious input was placed on maintaining these properties. However as each apartment is owned by a different owner the standard is highly variable.

In addition the cleaners/housekeeping don't really clean or have any set guidelines. House keeping consists of a superficial spray and wipe followed by clean sheets! So often things are missed or just not checked between peoples stays. For example - the remotes to the TVs had been misplaced so weren't in the second room when we were moved - if the housekeeping had checked this we wouldn't have had to ring down to management again to find them. In addition coffee and tea aren't restocked, just missed by housekeeping. The cleaners need to have a list of requirements and get them ticked off each time they service a room- that way when a room needs maintenance they can inform management.

The only positive was the location - close to Woolworths and the centre, and walking distance to the lagoon (15 mins).

Hi well_travelled079 I do recall and know who you are. I feel very sad that you left still feeling the need to give us this review. I personally dealt with this and believe I did everything possible to make you and your family comfortable and enjoy your stay. Our bathrooms are not from the 80's and our apartments are not dirty. Our cleaners at the time were professional and did not move around with a superficial spray and wipe, however they do move fast when guests are in the room as to not inconvenience you. We did find some ants (a typical Darwin issue) which may have bitten your daughter and this was dealt with immediately. We gave you a complimentary upgrade, offered medical treatment for your daughter and I personally delivered fruit bowl, flowers and hand-made chocolates as I cared and was concerned for you all. I'm sorry my concern was construed as being anything but that. We are really sorry that you didn't enjoy your stay. We do have lovely apartments and take on-board all of your comments as there is always room for improvement. Hope you are all well and have a joyous and safe Christmas The General Manager

My family stayed in this so called "luxury" apartment. First of all the furniture was shocking (out dated), and also the apartment was discusting (dust and dirt), had no TV reception for the whole time we were there, also the TV also did not work half the time, the dryer did not work, the sliding door did not lock, and the worst thing was water pouring down from the ceiling from the air conditioner, which is shocking for a holiday we thought was going to relax us, we ended up being more stressed about getting the HELL out of there! The other thing to worry about is the management, they would not give us a refund or even give us another room to stay in! The manager basically said "this is darwin, nobody cares about this, not even the owners". I cannot believe that we would not get any compensation or compassion from those pricks because they dont care. I really feel for those people with toddlers and smaller children.... DO NOT RISK GOING HERE!
