My husband & I plus our 24 year old daughter stayed at Palms Motel for 2 nights while attending a family wedding in Darwin. We had a family room which was very spacious and very clean. The aircon was reasonably quiet and very efficient. The beds were extremely comfortable too. It was quiet and in a great location close to everything. The pool area is great and I wished we had more time to enjoy it. Yes it is a bit dated and like previous travelers we found we didn't get enough shampoo/conditioner or shower gel for 3 people for 2 days. Unlike another traveler we did have plates and cutlery in our kitchenette! There was an iron in the room too. We weren't disappointed by The Palms as it doesn't misrepresent itself in its' advertising like some hotels we've stayed in. It's a 3 star motel that we'd be happy to stay in again in the future.

We found the Palms to be basic but very clean and tidy with helpful, friendly proprietors. Good for those on a budget or with families. On a map it seemed close to town but proved a little far for walking, particularly with heavy bags of groceries (Woolworths being several blocks away). There is an inviting pool and a hotel restaurant across the road if you are not inclined to cook.

We found this motel via Topend recommendation. To our surprise, it was very very good, clean, quiet, value for money and the owners were most helpful. My family was very happy with the spacious family room we got (2 adults and a 10 yo). I would recommend it as a good place for budget family travellers. Your own kitchen and your own ensuite.

We stayed here from the 24/12/11 to 01/01/12. Although a little on the older side we found the Motel to be comfortable & clean. The housekeeping staff were wonderful...very helpful and friendly. Our room (1bedroom apartment with kitchenette and en-suite) was very roomy and plenty big enough for the three of us, laundry facilities were good, pool clean and the price was very reasonable. Would recommend to anyone after basic, good value accommodation close to Darwin City Centre.

Simple & clean. Must be leak in shower tiles as water was on tiles pooling next to toilet but wouldn't drain as the drain appeared blocked.
Great if on a budget, very spacious.
Didn't use pool but looked nice.
Coin washing machine out back which was handy.
Tavern & bottle shop across the road, very convenient.

We spent three nights at the Palms following our arrival in Darwin on a birding trip. The location was perfect for us, since the hotel is next door to the Botanic Gardens and near the Stuart Highway as well, so it was easy to get out of town quickly to visit some birding locations. The accommodation is basic: the room was rather spartan and cheaply furnished, but the kitchenette had everything we needed including an excellent electric frying pan, and the small fridge kept our food supplies, and our drinking water and beer, ice-cold. There is a pub across the road, which we did not try, with an attached drive-thru bottle shop, and a good Thai restaurant (Green Chillies, reviewed separately) a couple of minutes' walk away. The owner is genial and can provide advice about where to eat (it was he who advised the Green Chillies). The pool is small but good. Our room was air-conditioned (you use your room key tag to activate the air-conditioning). There is a coin laundry on site, which was very useful to us. The motel is not cheap, but nothing in NT is cheap! A dead cockroach in the cabinet under the sink was an unwelcome surprise, but not unexpected in the tropics. NB: there is no internet service of any kind at The Palms, which was a major inconvenience (we finally went to McDonald's on Smith St in the CBD to take advantage of their free wifi, but that involved a fairly long walk).

This hotel was reasonable cost for Darwin. It had a very nice pool area, which was very welcome after a hot day sight seeing. It was quite convenient for Mindl beach, a bit of a longer walk to the town centre. The room was basic, but was clean, although a gap under the front door did allow cockroaches to pay a visit, though they didn't stay long, I think the room had probably been sprayed. Hotel was nice and quiet at night, so got a good nights sleep. Overall a good choice if on a budget.

Positives: Clean Room, Friendly Staff, DIY Laundry available ($3/cycle), Microwave oven & Toaster, Close to town, without the noise of Mitchell St.
Negatives: The double bed in our room was very short. My feet were hanging over the edge (and I am only 165cm tall). Very Dated, The door and windows are curtained, but let a lot of fluorescent light through at night, so I kept waking up and thinking it was morning. If you like to sleep in a dark room, this hotel is not for you.

A good cheap motel about a four minute drive from the centre of town. Rooms were very clean and (for a motel) pretty roomy. Room had a microwave so you could "nuke your own". Alternately you could go across the road for a nice pub meal.

The motel is in a quiet area and fairly close to the casino, a golf course and the botanic gardens.

Would happily stay there again.

"Our room (21)was tucked in an alcove so did not have the floor to ceiling windows along the walkway. It was therefore more private and also remained darker in the mornings which made sleeping in much easier. We thought this was a bonus."
