Detailed Reviews
Going to write a completely honest review, as I religiously read the reviews on this hotel before staying here and it made me feel very apprehensive about visiting. I’m not too sure why this hotel had so many negative reviews, especially comments about the noise?
The noise was never an issue during the week that I stayed in this hotel. I stayed here for a relaxing hotel and it was exactly that which I had. The sound proof windows and curtains work a treat, you can barely hear any noise from the street below when you are in your room. I really cannot understand why this comment has been made by so many people, as prior to my visit it really put me off staying here but this wasn’t an issue at all.
The staff are absolutely fantastic, always greet you with a smile and polite conversation. I enquired at the reception if we could have a kettle for our room, as you are provided with a coffee machine (which you can use to make tea) but was a bit too complicated for me. Within 20 minutes a member of staff had bought a brand new kettle to our room. Fantastic service.
Another positive which I haven’t seen mentioned in any other review, is you are provided with complimentary bottles of water every day - I’ve never had this from any other hotel.
All in all this hotel is fantastic and any issues we had were absolutely nothing to do with the hotel itself.
The breakfast is the best breakfast buffet I’ve ever had. The bacon is cooked nice and crispy. There’s lots of different options, fried breakfast, breads, fruits, yoghurts, cheeses.
The Hugo’s chain in Malta is fantastic, the food also in Hugo’s pizza and pasta is incredible.
Some points I’d like to make in case anyone reading this is thinking of staying here (none of these points are directly about Hugo’s hotel, but about the location of the hotel);
- the surrounding roads are dirty, they’re cleaned every morning but the area smells disgusting.
- You do not feel safe walking round the streets at night. Group of dodgy men hang around the surrounding area, all day and all evening.
- During the time you walk to breakfast, the bins are being collected so usually a lot of flies around which is off putting.
- Lots of steep hills and steps, so if you’re elderly or less able to walk this definitely wouldn’t be the hotel for you.
All in all, a great hotel and fantastic staff. But the smelly, dirty location really does take it from a 5* to a 4*.

At the third attempt my wife and I finally got to have our honeymoon in what I can only describe as an amazing hotel. All the staff, check-in, concierge, housekeeping were all extremely polite and helpful.
We chose Malta initially as we both had not been to the island before, and the hotel criteria was "child free", which Hugo's is. The website photos are exactly as to what you get . The hotel is very lavish, with no expense spared on decoration on both the inside, and outside of the hotel. The rooms are kept well maintained, windows / balcony doors are double glazed to drown out the hustle and bustle of the day and nightlife , blackout curtains help to keep out the neon lights of this lively district.
There is an infinity pool and bar on the roof, which is very popular, and in the current climate the number of persons around the pool is limited, but a cocktail in the bar area is an alternative, with staff on hand to wait on you as you relax and take in view of the bay, and surrounding area.
My wife and I had 12 fantastic days at Hugo's, and the breakfast in the morning set us up for the day, with a choice from a buffet style bar of traditional English breakfast items to a European cold meats selection / pastries, vegetarian, and a small selection of cakes.
The staff at breakfast were all great, very polite, and always had time to talk to you. A very special thank you to a young lady by the name of Ranjita, she was there most mornings, very cheerful , you could see her smile underneath her facemask ! She made us feel so welcome, not just another of the many guests that went through the hotels doors. A thank you too to the duty manager, who also was very friendly and pleasant , he ensured everything run smoothly each morning.
As for food, Hugo's is a brand in the area that has a very good reputation, not only on the quality of food, but price. From the hotel you are no more than a few minutes from a Hugo's branded eatery, whether you fancy something lavish, or just a pizza or a burger, which we sampled a couple of nights, and they were delicious.
There is a lot of construction going on around the whole area, and not 24/7, but this is happening in the populated areas of the island, and did not affect our stay at all, as once we had a few hours by the pool, we were either wandering around the area, or diving.
We have already decided to return next year, and hopefully the standards we have seen this visit still be there upon our return.

Had a great time at this hotel, when we arrived the staff were very nice, we were staying in Hugo’s boutique which is round the back of H hotel, there’s a lot of steps to get up to the hotel entrance, but for us we didn’t mind. The hotel room was so lovely and clean and the decoration was beautiful. I recommend the indoor pool in H hotel that anyone that stays in the hotel can access, it’s very quiet and has a heated pool. You can also access their sauna and steam room which was great. The roof top pool was too noisy for us the music was really loud but the pool itself was very nice and the cocktails are lovely and a good price. I saw other people complain about the noise from the clubs at night but personally we didn’t hear anything and slept fine every night. They take a 50 euro deposit per night but I got this back the same day we left. Would definitely stay here again.

First things first, we arrived early in the morning and the lovely hotel staff did everything they could so we were able to check as soon as possible, usually it’s 4pm. So that was really nice and we appreciate it.
When we arrived the staff was cleaning the dirty trash cans on the road right in front of the hotel. We booked a room with sea view .. Well, we got sea view and a view of ALL NEIGHBOURS. We have had a hot tub in our room right in front to enjoy the sea view .. you can imagine it is not as enjoyable when there is everyone around watching you.
For breakfast you have to walk down to the H Hotel and also for the SPA and the towels for the beach or the pool. As I mentioned above the staff cleans the trash cans in front of the entrance, I advise to not wear flip flops it’s really disgusting. As if that’s not enough the second possible way to the partner Hotel is through the streets of last nights party people.
Breakfast is great. I don’t quite understand why I can’t pay for a good cup of coffee, because the WMF Coffee is just not the one for me…
the spa & rooftop pool don’t appeal to be in great shape. There have been construction workers at the spa pool (it was really loud). There has been black mold in the steam cabins and also at both pools.
We tried to get an upgrade to a suite with sauna and hot tub, as we had already booked a suite with hot tub, I thought that can’t really cost much more. But I was surprised that they would have charged 52,3 percent additionally to what I had already paid for.
We came to relax (nice hotel with spa and hot tub) and maybe if I had read all the reviews maybe it could have been spared me sleepless nights. The surrounding is soooo loud with all the clubs, if you’re with friends and you wanna get drunk - do it. But if you want to relax, get a massage and everything, go somewhere else. Far away from here.
The clubs play loud music up to 5am and the construction workers start at 7 am
Nothing much to do around, besides day drinking - so sad

The H Boutique itself is an oasis in the desert of St Julian’s. Our room was lovely, large and well equipped. It was cleaned nicely every day we were there. People should note that for breakfast you need to take the short walk to their sister hotel H Hotel, and ditto for the rooftop pool.
It was our fault really, for not properly researching the area and getting sucked in by the lovely hotel pictures! If you want a relaxing couples holiday or a cultural trip, do not go to this area. If you want to party, absolutely crack on and this hotel would be a perfect pick for you!
The streets were filthy every morning, and the short walk to breakfast was horrid with the smell of sewerage and the industrial bins directly outside the hotel entrance. We read reviews recommending earplugs and I’m glad we brought them because the sounds of the club would have kept us up otherwise (but bring ear plugs and you’ll be fine!).
The location provided a good base for day trips to valetta and taxis were cheap, but eventually we ended up moving to a different hotel on the island for a more relaxing holiday.
As I have said, our bad for not researching the area, and the hotel itself is nice, but unless you’re there for clubbing the area really is horrid!

Dear katierW7518LV, Thank you for staying at Hugo's Boutique and taking some time to share your feedback. We are pleased to know that you liked our stylish property, however, we are not pleased that you left earlier and moved to another hotel. It is true that our lively and vibrant area with a lot of bars and clubs is not suitable for a peaceful holiday, and we therefore understand your decision, while hoping you enjoyed the rest of your stay in Malta. Hopefully we will have an opportunity to welcome you during a less busy moment in the island, and ensure a pleasant stay! Kindest Regards, Customer Relations Manager

To be adverted as one of the best hotels in Malta, I e was incredibly disappointed.
We booked this one off the good reviews and the indoor pool (incase the weather was bad we had something to do still)
At check in there was no mention of the pool being closed, after walking up there and was told, disappointed as many other hotels had indoor pools.
The roof top bar was closed because of a private film being filmed up there, no mention of this either.
The roof top pool was a mess. Chipped tiles around the pool. Didn’t look the cleanest.
Breakfast….there’s no point in paying for a stone cold breakfast every prong here. May aswell go to a bar and grab one. It wasn’t the times we came down either, admittedly we came down about 10am for breakfast and thought it was cold so suggested we went earlier the next morning, made no difference the food is cooked and left in big pots with lids, difficult to take off and no where to put them while you were scooping your food.
No heat lamps on to keep it warm.
It was cooked and left.
Options for breakfast were very low too, not much choices and if you wanted an omelette or pancake you were waiting standing up there for a good 8-10 mins,
Rooms were slightly tacky but nice enough. Bathroom doors was very uncomfortable pure glass so your parter/roomie could essentially see you going to the toilet. Not something anyone needs to experience.
Not what we paid for. Trying to get at least a portion of my money back. Very very disappointed.

Dear Valued Guest, Thank you for staying at Hugo's Boutique Hotel and taking the time to post a review. The Team is not pleased to see your comments and realize that your recent visit was not enjoyable, and we apologize for not being able to meet your needs this time. We are aware that there are some things to work on, and we will therefore take your useful comments seriously when it comes to improving our procedures and services. Our ultimate goal has always been to become better and make our guests feel pleasant. It is important for us to mention that the Infinity Pool is officially not in operation after November 1st, and on certain days, if the weather allows it, we will open it in an attempt to provide more facilities to our clients. On the other hand, we are very sorry to hear that your visit fell during the renovation of our spa, which was done in the best interest of our clients (to improve some spa facilities, to ensure safety of anyone using it, and to continuously enhance our services, which we feel is very important). Still, we owe you an apology if any of our team members did not provide you with the correct information upon arrival. To be honest, your comments about breakfast took us by surprise, as it is not something likely to hear - we usually have so many nice feedback about the breakfast buffet, there is a variety of dishes, and there is always a manager on duty to assist in case you feel there is anything below your expectations. Still, all of these aspects will be checked into detail, and we will take the action to improve the efficiency of any aspects that require further attention. We thank you for your feedback once again, should you consider coming back, please feel free to contact us and we will do our best to make your next stay a better one. Sincerely, Customer Relations Manager

Beautiful hotel in middle of the party zone. We didn't know this when booking. We did sleep well despite the fact you can hear very loud music until 3am 5am at weekends. But location was handy to get to everything. Rooms are clean and beautiful designs. Staff friendly but lack efficiency at times. We didn't get fresh towels but old ones removed rang reception approx 4 times before towels arrived hours later. WiFi OK but definitely not fibre power. Mini bar expensive, coffee and tea charge also. Spa and pool in the H Hotel. The spa had non heated pool and steam room wasn't working, we didn't use it. Hot tubs on the infinity pool rooftop were lovely, but 1 day 2 couples decided to blast music out but staff said nothing. Very disrespectful to other guests. Not hotels fault but they're was major roadworks going on dust and dirt paths in bits. The balcony was covered in dust and to be honest pointless as we had no view and it was tiny, wouldn't book balcony again. Breakfast was delicious plenty of choice and very tasty. Despite the few annoyances we would stay here again but maybe in the H Hotel and not the boutique hotel.

Dear 939LindaS939, Thank you a lot for staying at Hugo's Boutique Hotel and taking the time to share your feedback. We are grateful for your suggestions and for mentioning both good and not so good aspects of your experience. It is nice to see that you liked our central location, clean and luxury designed rooms, delicious breakfast buffet and friendly front desk staff. However, from your review we can see that there is room for improvement, and we will definitely do our best to strengthen some of our team members and achieve more efficient and fast service. We are sorry that you stayed with us when we experienced some technical issues in the spa and when there was a construction in the neighborhood, we really hope it did not affect your satisfaction a lot. Hopefully there will be an opportunity to welcome you again at H Hotel & Spa and provide you with an amazing experience! Kind Regards,

The rooms are nice. The cleaners did an amazing job and were the best part of the hotel. The receptions were pleasant. The bar staff could have been more efficient although I appreciate they are working in hot and uncomfortable conditions. The noise until 4/5am is horrendous. Although I went for drinks each night and came back around midnight I still struggled to sleep every night. This isn't the hotel's fault, they can't help being situated on top of the strip but if you value your sleep this is not the hotel for you. The worst part of the hotel was that the management would allow people off the street to pay to come and use the pool. This meant I saw hotel guests unable to find sun loungers because they were in use by people who were not guests at the hotel. I appreciate they needed extra funds during COVID but as we have returned to normality I found this pursuit of profit over customer service left a very negative mark on my experience. The cocktails and food by the pool were very good. Overall I thought the hotel was overpriced for what it offered. If a high end experience is what you're looking for I recommend staying in St Paul's and visiting Cafe Del Mar which has better food, drinks, music, a better pool and better service.

Dear LCP93, Thank you for your detailed feedback. We're delighted we could have the opportunity to host you while you were in Malta. While we are glad to know your overall stay was pleasant, we apologize for any disappointment resulting from your experience at our Infinity pool. This is certainly not the experience nor the image that we wished for you to have. Your feedback has been shared with all of the concerned departments and we are already working to ensure such shortfalls are rectified and prevented in the future. We look forward to hosting you once again soon. Have a beautiful day! With kindest regards, Andre Ravan Guest Relations Executive

Hotel is more appropriate for 18-30s clubbers holidays than couples breaks and other than the fact that it looks good for Instagram there is nothing luxury about the place.
Rooms are very impractical with no well lit mirrors for ladies to do hair and makeup, there is also a lack of PowerPoints for hair straighteners etc within the reach of the mirror in the room. The decor is really dark and a bit seedy to the honest, clearly designed by and for men….
The staff were rude and acted genuinely inconvenienced if you asked them literally anything!!
The pool was like a scene from love island, very pretentious and the bar was ridiculously overpriced.
And the noise is just beyond reason, no chance of sleep before 3am what so ever with music blaring and then the cleanup operation begins which isn’t as loud but is still noisy!
Would not recommend and feel like the positive reviews misrepresent the place and must be written by those looking for a booze filled, clubbers holiday!
Oh and there are at least 6 lap dance clubs literally next door!!!
I have stayed at many true 4 & 5 star hotels - this is not one of them!!!
Seedy, awful place.

Staying in this hotel as we speak.
The hotel looks like a brothel, the staff are rude and customer service is a palling.
Booked this as a package with take that
Tickets.
Was thinking I was coming to a beautiful relaxing spa hotel. Instead it’s a like a 18-30s hotel in a brothel.
Paid extra for a balacany which overlooks a roof of takeaways and clubs.
The noise is appalling at night of drunken people, music.
Wanted to move hotels won’t move our room, won’t offer refund.
Told us if we leave we would get cancellation charges but it’s all paid in full.
Small pool on roof, with DJ, no space for beds.
The worst hotel and experience ever. I can’t wait to leave this hotel.
Most hotels booked up as it’s busy everywhere for take take.
Staff Couldent care less about you are solving problems 😡😢

Response from Customer Relation Manager, Owner at Hugo's Boutique Hotel
Responded Oct 22, 2024
Dear Valued Guest, Thank you for staying at the Hugo's Boutique Hotel, and for taking a moment to inform us about your feedback. We are sorry for not being able to meet your expectations, and offer you a better stay this time. As you have already noticed, last couple of days were extremely busy in all hotels in the island, which made it difficult for us to change the room, due to non-availability. It would have probably been much easier if you'd had the opportunity to check our website, and get familiar with our rooms, designs, location, Infinity Pool etc. prior to your arrival - we published it online to keep you informed and prevent any dissatisfaction as much as possible. We would also like to kindly remind you that third party bookings are modified with the agency directly, in accordance to existing cancellation policies, equal for all guests. Nevertheless, rest assured that we will speak to our staff, and make sure that they are following our standards in communication with clients, and respond to your complaints adequately - our apology if anyone failed to do so. In case you change your mind and provide us with another opportunity to host you - please let us know beforehand, and we will do our best to change your impression and offer you a enjoyable experience. Regards, Customer Relations Manager

Yes they do - you get cards upon arrival - you give them to the staff at the pool and can change after every use.
No you only pay for what you use
I don't know, I think it is card only
