Stayed here for the fourth time this summer. A wonderful, traditional Greek 'rooms to rent' establishment with a real personal touch from Maria, the matriarch of the establishment. This is not a five star establishment, nor is Maria very fluent in English. There is no business centre and there isn't even an elevator. However, the breakfasts are as divine as they are rustic. The noise from the charming African Grey parrot named Manolis is as loud as it is heartwarming. You might arrive here after a long flight and taxi ride up the winding road to Vouliotis, but a stay here is as energizing and relaxing as can be. Looking forward to returning next year!

At €65 a night, we felt this was poor value for money compared to all the other hotels we stayed in Greece.. Especially as there was no TV, no pool, no Wifi, and no breakfast included. Maria does provide a continental breakfast, at an additional €8 per head - expensive by any standards ie that was more than we paid for a full English breakfast with fresh orange juice and Italian coffee in the most touristy part of Kos Town! The two bed studio room is very, very small, rather shabbily furnished and not kept too clean. The balcony and one table is shared with the neighbour - luckily we had it to ourselves but if that room was occupied, would have felt very crowded. Beds rather hard and sleep often disturbed by barking dogs. On the plus side, the view from Mary's over the sea is lovely, and Vourliotes is a quaint hilltop village with a pretty square and restaurants. We went there for the walking but found the path to Kokkari in very bad condition ie narrow, steep and a lot of loose shale which is slippery. Walking up is easier on the feet but a steep 2 + hour climb. We preferred the €15 taxi ride from Kokkari. On reflection I would not recommend staying in Vourliotes, but rather stay elsewhere. And for walkers always ask about the condition of the kalderimi or path before setting off.

Maria and Marcos provide a warm welcome in the little mountain town of Vourliotes. Located near the school on the north west edge of the village (and well signed from the central square, the Platea), they have a small number of charming self-catering studios, each with balcony and beautiful view. Ours was very clean, with comfortable bed and (for an extra €5 air conditioning - worth it as this was the only night on our trip we had to close the window because of mosquitoes). They have a beautiful garden, vine-sheltered terrace and a parrot. The breakfast (an extra €3 a head) featured wonderful home-made apricot jam. They have a relationship with a restaurant in the square who will welcome you like old friends and offer you a great price if you're staying. A family we met at the hotel had been going their eight years and it was easy to see why.
