The Farm Cottages is a family-run business attached to our dairy farm. The owners John and Gertrude take great care and pride to present the best possible experience of luxury self catering in Ireland to all our guests. It is a charming property, set in a very scenic location of the Blackwater Valley with panoramic views of the Nagle mountains.

Our second visit and hopefully not the last. Gertrude and John always helpful and welcoming. Nothing too much trouble (and we had plenty). Thank you to you both for another super holiday.
Billy's cottage is a superior holiday cottage and central for visiting a great many places. Long may it continue. Have a good summer and hopefully the weather will improve. ????????????

Warm welcome, nothing too much trouble. The house and garden well worth a longer stay. Hope to stay longer next time and chill and relax. Many thanks for making our busy holiday so enjoyable. The dogs enjoyed the garden and the field. Looking forward to next year and a good catch up. Many thanks.

We have been holidaying for 20 years the Farm Cottages, I think only missing 4 years in the 20.
We have had fantastic extended family holidays with ages from 82 down to 1 years.
If you want a relaxing, stress free, typical irish hospitality holiday this is the place.
Great walks, fishing, beaches and great sight seeing all within an easy distance if not on the doorstep.
Gertrude and John are fantastic hosts and nothing is to much trouble.
"Good Crack in the local Spinning Wheel Pub"
Would highly reccomend if your considering visiting.

My husband and I and 3of my girlfriends from Corpus Christi,Texas based our travels in Ireland out of this wonderful house. It was clean, beautiful ,roomy and a real pleasure to stay in. Our hostess was wonderful.she even took us into town to rent a car. We got in late the first night but she had a pie and fresh milk from her cows waiting on us. Sorry it took me so long to write this but I really really did love our experience .

We have stayed at the wonderful Farm Cottages (Sand and Rock Cottages) twice now. They are superb for extended families, we have stayed with a mixture of 6 adults and 5 children (aged 4 to 11 at the time of stay) and every single person had the time of their life.

The cottages themselves are gorgeous, have everything needed and are lovely and cosy. The gardens have to be seen to be believed - they are huge, beautifully kept with their own tennis courts, football area, swings and just loads and loads of space and fresh air. The views are also fantastic.

There is plenty to do in the area, we have spent 2 separate weeks there and found different things to do both times and still have a list of what else to do. We've had walks in the country, shopping in Cork, a night at the races, paddling in the river at Castletownroche, horse riding, days on the beach - the list goes on....

Best of all are the wonderful hosts Gertrude and John, hard working but never too busy to chat and always happy to show the children life on the farm which is a wonderful experience for them.

I simply cannot recommend these cottages highly enough and we will certainly return again and again.

This cottage is a very special house. It still retains many of its original "Church" features. The house facilities are excellent and the location is central to many wonderful holiday spots. Our children loved the farm environment and the space that Billy's Cottage provides. Gertrude is a brilliant hostess, we loved meeting and chatting with her. We can highly recommend this cottage to anybody who is considering holidaying in Mallow/Fermoy (Blackwater Valley). We day tripped to Lismore Heritage Town, Killarney Lakes, Ballyhoura Bike trails, Cork City and Cashel. Our return journey to Dublin took just over 2 hours on the motorway. This was the ultimate pleasure to a wonderful holiday.

My wife and I have been going back to the Farm Cottages twice a year since May 2008, and will keep going back.
They are very roomy cottages with three double size bedrooms that will sleep 6 people easily.
The gardens are large and well kept, also there is a full size tennis court and swings for the young ones.
The village ( Castletownroache ) is 1.5kl away with good shops and a very good butcher, also the people are helpful and friendly.
Mallow & Fermoy are not far away if you need to go for the supermarkets to do a big shop.
You are also in a good position for going siteseeing as you are based in the middle lower half of Southern Ireland, so days out are on the cards.
The owners of the cottages also run a dairy herd on the farm 1/2kl away, in the spring they have calves that are a joy to see and feed, also chickens.
There is also fishing down on the river just below the farm, if you dont fish its a nice walk.

We stayed in Billy's Cottage which was spacious and nicely decorated, the kitchen contains a plethora of cooking utensils and aids, so you can actually cook when there (I have been to many self catering places where this is not the case). The lounge is cosy and has a real fire, and John and Gertrude kindly provided us with a bucket of coat, it was April in Ireland afterall. The bedrooms were light and airy, a great nights sleep, every night!

However the reality is that you will probably spend most of your time when not out exploring Ballyhoura County, (or the Cork Cost, Ring of Kerry or the Dingle Peninsula), will be in the Dining Room which adjoins the Kitchen, and overlooks the fields and looks across to Rock and Sand cottages. The Garden is a real treat, our dogs loved it, there is a picnic table and formal chairs too on the patioed area at the back of the property.

However what sets the farm cottages apart is the level of care from John and Gertrude, we had fresh made scones, I was even taught how to make them and although Gertrude is too modestto acknowledge this, I really do beleive that in a cook-off, Rachel Allen would lose. John's passion for his farm is really lovely to see and we were visiting when calves were being born, and it was lovely to see the new additions to his herd.

Sorry I digressed, what is great is the situation, at night there is no light pollution and you can see the stars, you are a short hop from the whole of South, the coast, mountains and all accessable for day trips away. Mallow has a great little town centre and Castletownroche, the 'Village' is amazing and has some lovely little pubs, village shops and is well worth a walk around.

I am afraid that my experience of self-catering has been set now, and I fear I will be unable to go anywhere else.....I would love to live in any of the cottages, we were lucky enough to have a peek at Rock and Sand Cottages too (my mother-in-law has stayed at Farm Cottages many times over the years and said that any would be fine and she was right. The Games rooms and in Rock and Sand were great and they both back on to the Tennis Court.......Although from Billy's it is just a few minutes walk along the lane.

Gertrude and John are consumate hosts and the care and attention to the properties is extended to the guests. It was a very welcome break and we even had amazing weather (we only need a fire once in 9 days). The whole holiday was amazing, and it was the Farm Cottages that made it so. None of us have ever felt so comfortable in a holiday let. John and Gertrude made it so. Highly recommend (unless of course it is when we want it!).

If you love the countryside this is the place, yes you will hear farming going on now and then but that is country life.
You also hear lots of wild life around you and see it, this time we heard lots of Grouse and the odd Fox.
There are some nice walks to be had down by the river Blackwater valley, also close to Mallow & Fermoy which are good shopping,
Also in Fermoy the Grand Hotel is for Breakfast, Dinner and Lunch.

We LOVED our stay at Billy's Cottage! It was perfectly located to get out and do stuff during the day (lots of castles and parks), but have a beautiful home to return to. The fresh scones and milk from the cows was a gift on arrival! The local town of Castletownroche was great for our daily shops and the butcher was a legend, then Mallow near enough for the bigger stuff.

A great set up at the cottage meant lovely meals all together as a large family with kids in the open kitchen/dining space. I loved the sun beaming in that room during the afternoon as well. The backyard was perfectly groomed Irish grass for lay down under the tree or run around with the kids.

We took advantage of the welcoming nature of Gertrude and John with daily walks down to the farm to see the cows milked. The kids loved Max the dog, picking wild strawberries along the road, and getting to walk home with eggs from the chicken coop.

All in all, a beautiful stay in a perfect farm cottage! Thank you Gertrude and John!!
