Castello di Spessa is an historical residence in the heart of Collio in Friuli Venezia Giulia, one of the most famous Italian wine regions. It was built in 1200, and for centuries it was the residence of the aristocracy and a destination of illustrious personalities as Giacomo Casanova and Lorenzo Da Ponte; the castle offers 15 romantic rooms decorated in Venetian ‘700 and ‘800 style, and is part of a resort consisting of Castello di Spessa winery, Wine Shop, 18 holes golf course, Bistrot Il Gusto di Casanova, Hotel and gourmand Restaurant La Tavernetta al Castello, bar and restaurant Hosteria del Castello, digital detox Apartments in the vineyards furnished in country-chic style, and country hospitality at Casale in collina with 10 double rooms. It is also possible to visit the medieval wine ageing cellars, the most ancient in the area, and taste our wines by appointment. The Resort is the ideal location for ceremonies and classy events, as well as to organize meetings and conferences, thanks to the equipped Conference Room Casanova.

Travelled to Castello Di Spessa as a wedding guest, and easily got lost in the charm of this magnificent building. Set atop a hill with stunning views of the surrounding vineyard and golf course, this property, off the normal tourist path was a breathe of fresh air. Steeped in history it was a place to truly unwind and relax.
Things to be conscious of, as a historic building, it is not modern so some normal comforts may be lacking. The rooms were massive and as such the air con was not very efficient, and absent in the bathroom altogether. The property was not 'cheap' and things like the pool are additional costs which isn't great, plus the Castello does not have a restaurant on site.
The golf course is wonderful though

After a 5hrs motorbike trip we arrived around 4pm in the Castello di Spessa and were looking very much forward to staying in this magnificent estate and enjoy their wines and hospitality. To our dismay, the pool cost 25EUR per person, what we didn’t know. We only wanted to enjoy a quick dip and refresh ourselves but were told that since it is part of the spa, it costs an entry fee. I could not believe that having booked a room for 170 EUR per night as well as reserved for four people in their Michelin star restaurant the (simple) pool was not part of the facilities like in every hotel we had stayed during our trip. And considering the late time, there was no exception made despite the spa lady asking for it. Unfortunately, it spoilt our stay there, since we felt not welcomed. Pity, because the estate is very beautiful and the reception and person showing us the room were friendly. So was the competent service in the restaurant.

Castello di Spessa is just something else! It's a place at which you can feel like a princess in the most magical castle while simultaneously feeling as relaxed as you would on a tropical island! The room was the most glorious room I have ever stayed in! It was so spacious and luxurious but also cozy and homelike. There is one thing that completely left me speechless, and that is the spa. It feels like taking a bath in the middle of the luxurious castle, with the wine, of course. Since you can literally bathe in wine! The view from each pool and bathtub is insane. On top of that, Andrea did such an incredible and unique massage. The spa experience was just like I imagine Greek gods to live in stories, in a state of tranquility surrounded by an abundance of wine and beautiful art.

The food was amazing! The dinners at La Tavernetta al Castello were so good. But what made it really stand out, were the people that truly cared for our enjoyment. They paid attention to what we liked the first night and kept making recommendations based on our preferences on the following nights.
To my surprise, I absolutely loved the golf lesson! I took a lesson with a golf pro, and I fell in love with the sport. He was so supportive and a truly amazing teacher even for a complete beginner like myself. I also liked that you can rent bikes and drive through the vineyards.

In the end, I have to mention how beautiful the location is! There are hills and vineyards wherever you look. It's just as beautiful as Toscana, for example, while being peaceful and undisturbed at the same time. Incredible people at Castello di Spessa are also the reason that this stay was so memorable! I can't wait to return to Castello di Spessa in the future!

We got married at Castello di Spessa last year.

The location is beautiful, and that’s why we initially decided to celebrate there, but the overall experience was absolutely awful.

The manager, which is the wife of the owner, has no experience and no manners.

We booked a tasting menu trial in August for October, and we flew from London for it but unfortunately she forgot to inform the chef, so we did not have the chance to taste the actual food selection. After that, instead of apologising, she blamed us because we could not “follow the procedure” that apparently consists in visiting the restaurant twice: 1 first time to meet the chef and discuss food preferences and a second time to taste it. Please note that I was pregnant and I live abroad, so I could not travel after October, and she knew that very well as I made it clear from the very beginning, and I also emailed her several times to remind her that was the only time I could come for the tasting.

As we did not feel comfortable committing for such an expensive food selection without trying it first, we decided to go for another catering.

Because of that the agreed price for the rental of the castle suddenly doubled. This is understandable, so we did not blink and agreed on the new price.

The annoying part was that those £7000 did not include the use of the spaces of the castle: each room was roughly £500 in addition (£500 for the church, £500 for the cellar, £900 for the Medieval party room, etc…); the cleaning was not included either; the use of the kitchen supplies was not granted to the external catering; the price did not even include the use of tables and chairs, that we had to rent from them at an additional charge.
It was also mandatory to buy their own wine.
We found a bit ridiculous the all thing but we agreed anyway.

As we had had more than 50 guests coming from abroad, we also asked her a quote for the sleepover. She gave us a price that was more expensive that the price they were actually selling their rooms on Booking.com (and indeed we booked them from Booking.com. Pretty silly on their behalf as in this was they also had to pay a commission on the platform).

We also asked if it was possible to organise a brunch for the morning after the wedding for all the guests, but even this apparently was a problem, so we have to book elsewhere.

To conclude, the morning after the wedding they tried to charge us £5000 more that the agreed price, for some allegedly use of the terrace after midnight, despite the fact that we agreed in writing that the party could go ahead until 2 am.

Franckly, if I could go back I would never pick this place.
There are so many other beautiful wedding location close by, this castle is very nice but it is not worth the headache.

Dear LaCriTs, we are sorry and surprised in reading such a negative review, moreover after so many months from the day of your "yes, I do". First of all, we regret having to point out that the prices indicated by you do not correspond to the rates applied by us. All our wedding services are tailor made and are studied and agreed specifically for - and with - our spouses, until reaching the perfect design for your dream wedding. Each step of this 6-handed study is then sealed by a written contract between the parties that protects both from unpleasant surprises. That's why we don't recognize ourselves in your feedback, not even under the aspect of unmotivated extras. Being used to often hosting foreign couples, we always do our best to guarantee an appointment with our chef - when required - combining your travel needs with the tight scheduling of our catering service. Anyway, it remains understood that this cannot - and must not - interfer with the personal taste of the spouses. Furthermore, our company policy says that no external companies are accepted for catering services. We therefore invite you to contact us privately for any further information and clarification as, even with the best willingness and research among our beloved spouses, we have absolutely not been able to find a single couple with so many particular vicissitudes.

While we enjoyed the hotel grounds and found most of the hotel staff polite enough, we had disappointing experiences at both restaurants, particularly at La Tavervnetta. We ate at that restaurant twice and the staff completely ignored us, checking on other patrons multiple times while blatantly avoiding us and mocking us to our face on the few occasions they came to our table and we tried to say a few phrases in Italian. Other Italians and European non-native English speakers were waited on hand and foot, getting checked on multiple times by multiple servers, while we we could not flag anyone down to order more drinks or dessert. Eventually, after waiting an hour, we got up, paid, and left. When we ate there for lunch the prior day we had to wait 45 minutes for the check after we asked for it multiple times and the staff continued to attend to other patrons instead. The hotel has enough to spend an entire vacation on its grounds, but we were so uncomfortable that we started leaving to do other things and eventually checked out a day early. The gentleman at the front desk didn’t even ask us how our stay was or why we decided to leave early. We had been in Italy for 2 weeks, had stayed at 4 other hotels and had not experienced anything like this elsewhere. Would definitely not recommend this hotel to any native English speakers.

Fabulous that is it and also secluded peaceful quaint wonderful tranquil you can not fault this place for pure peace and quite and total relaxation . The staff are fantastic can not do enough for you . The golf it is like having your own golf course . Restaurants lovely choices and staff great. We where there for our 30th wedding anniversary and had family in Slovenia which we can also recommend a visit .Don't expect lots of British lots of different nationalities. The breakfast kitchen is great as you will meet the other guest there but there is only 15 rooms so its not busy. Recommend this place for anyone who just wants to watch the wine grow as you are surrounded by vineyards A must for foodies and wine lovers p.s Casanova used to go there .

We were invited to a beautiful wedding party at the Castello di Spessa and decided to stay longer after the function. Extremely beautiful and relaxing place with good local wines and food. Very nice, personalised, service throughout. The breakfast service in the old castle kitchen is something special.

We spent two nights here in April in one of the loveliest rooms possible, #13. Spacious, exquisite in decor, and quiet. Also, the eat-in breakfast kitchen was a dream! As the place wasn't busy, we had time to talk to the multi-purpose bellman/breakfast helper, who had been there for seven years. He gave us a private tour of the entire ground floor, which is used for weddings, etc. Just amazing, with Murano glass chandeliers everywhere, a bride's room, a hunting room, a billiard room and more!
