Jungle Lore Birding Lodge is the first birding lodge of India. It is an iconic lodge that brought this region to the world map of bird watching. A very pretty lodge in a remote part of the Himalayas, easily accessible from Nainital. The lodge is located at 2000 meters and surrounded by thick oak forest. A base for trekkers and nature lovers. We organise bird walks, short day treks, also 2 nights or 3 nights treks from Pangot to Corbett NP that are appropriate for families and adventure seekers. All comforts are provided for holiday makers. Friendly staff. Fresh farm produce. Bar-be-cue and special dinners, private sit-outs, cooking classes, guided sightseeing. A complete Himalayan experience where you will have a chance to visit the local village, enjoy photographing their lifestyle and daily routine, share a meal or a cup of tea with them, understand their customs and traditions. Great Nainital tourist excursions with boat, cable car and horse rides, zoo visit, shoping etc. We promise you fun.

I have stayed at Jungle Lore Birding Lodge in October 2020 and again in October 2021. Both times with family and friends, in the window period when Covid fears seemed managably low. Hygiene was at the top of our minds, followed by quality of food and sighting of birds, in that order. Pangot is an acknowledged bird watching destination with a wide range of species found at different seasons of the year. This has drawn more visitors over the years, giving rise to more and more places to stay that emerge at a necessary cost of loss of trees.
Jungle Lore birding lodge is one of the early movers and laid out in the form of cottages at different levels, all nestled amidst trees. It offers privacy if you choose it, and group bonhomie at your choice if you get together in a cottage, at the restaurant or at a clearing in between.
On both occasions we were greeted with very well sanitized rooms with clean linen and toilets, endless supply of tea/coffee with pakodas and other savouries on demand, well laid out spreads at breakfast, lunch and dinner with dishes that will make you compliment the chef, and cheerful and helpful staff. The resident naturalist, Mahesh, was competent to start with and has been steadily enhancing his expertise with greater familiarity of the entire habitat.
There is a hide to observe birds coming to have a drink and it is extremely rewarding, both for photographers and for those who love to watch birds without the pain for scanning dense foliage with binoculars.
Absolutely delightful place to spend at least three nights, whether alone, with a small family or in a group.

I had the most wonderful time at Jungle Lore Birding Lodge. The photos online don't justify how good the place actually is. The cottages were beautiful, spacious, aesthetically designed, and separate from each other for privacy. The location is quiet and serene, bird friendly and hence one gets to see a wide variety of beautiful birds from within the Lodge itself. The cafe area is cute and a nice place to sit at, and the food was all kinds of amazing! The staff is also very hospitable and I didn't have anything to complain about and left feeling extremely good about my stay. I will definitely return next time with family and friends. Thank you for such a wonderful stay, team Jungle Lore!

Jungle Lore Birding Lodge is tucked amongst a crowded bunch of resorts in Pangot. It's down a steep slope & easy to miss. The car goes a short way down the driveway, close to the entrance, but from there on its a walk to the lodge down a number of steep steps.

Once inside the property it's a little peaceful haven tucked amongst tall trees. There is the constant sound of birds. Each “couple” gets a private cottage and there are 4 cottages in total, some of which can accommodate more than 2 people.
• The rooms are well appointed and tastefully done, in a rustic fashion, with plenty of shelf space for your stuff & bags and a balcony with chairs to sit out.
• Also provided are rubber slippers and a tea kettle.
• The geyser gives piping hot water. And the bathroom is designed such that the toilet and sink area floor stays “dry”.

The food is awesome and there was a great variety, served in a charming dining room. The staff is very helpful and polite and happy to serve.

It is a gorgeous spot for nature lovers and birders. There are a couple of hides- one covered and a bit claustrophobic, but it’s great for seeing the Kalij pheasant and for taking bird photographs. There’s not a huge variety of birds on the site, but the calls of the rufous sibia and the laughing thrushes permeate the air, as also the shriek of the slaty headed parakeets that fly overhead all day at great speed. The laughingthrushes are very charming and the streaked laughingthrush hops to within a few feet of you. The dining room verandah is the best place to hang out and watch the birds.
The place is not meant for anyone with knee problems- the stairs are steep and numerous. The location of the cottages is NOT OBVIOUS from the website.

• The dining room is at the highest level:16 + 10 steps down from main road/ entrance
• Cheer cottage (4 beds- 2 up a flight of stairs), has the fewest steps..
• To get to Koklass cottage (2 beds) – it takes 15 steps from the dining room level.
• Kalij has 3 beds. And it takes 34 additional steep steps from the Koklass level to get there... it is the same level as the covered hide.
• Marten (4 beds) is at the lowest level down a further set of steps from Koklass.

Book your birding guide ahead of time. I recommend Puran Joshi 9756540772

Dear Guest, The well-wooded campus of Jungle Lore Birding Lodge means that plenty of birds can be seen within our lodge itself. This, and our expert in-house naturalist, ensure that your birding visit is fruitful, easy, and memorable. We thank you for your valuable feedback, and are glad you enjoyed your birding holiday with us. Whether you are looking for another birdwatching tour, or a quiet tranquil escape to any of our other ecolodges, including Van Serai in Jageshwar, Walterre in the Doon Valley, or Gir Birding Lodge in Sasan Gir, our team will be glad to help you plan your next holiday. Jungle Lore offers the best location if you are looking to disconnect with the world yet remain connected (via wifi) if needed! All cottages offered have their own distinct features. If you like cosy, then stay in Koklass, if you are with family or bunch of friends, then choose Cheer! Martin & Khalij offer extra privacy and even more proximity to the jungle. The Lodge has a small and well-managed library where you can read all about birds and can also enjoy fiction (thrillers etc) and non-fiction books. The lodge has an old world charm to it and they respect the local culture as well.

The staff at Jungle Lore Birding lodge are the best! They ensure your stay is comfortable and memorable. They treat you to delicious home style cooked food, suggest bird watching trails, and even go for hikes with you if asked nicely! Bhuwan, Tajpal ji, Kishan ji, Mahesh & Chandan are an amazing team! Not to forget Bob – the dog who ensures your safety from the monkeys!

I have stayed at Jungle Lore 3 times so far and I intend to return whenever I get a chance. It’s home away from home for me!

Thank you Jungle Lore Team for taking such good care of me, my family & my friends!

As the name “Jungle Lore Birding Lodge” suggests the four cottage property is developed . All at different levels. Top most is double decker, so 4 people of same family can stay, using single bathroom. Next level has dining and library. Then a small cottage just enough for two. This has some plane horizontal ground for sit out and even bone fire. Next two are still lower level, surrounded by tall trees, mostly Oak.
Coming to amenities, modestly decorated, with reasonable quality linen, fittings and fixtures. Room heater and geyser are provided in all rooms. For back up they depend on invertor. Hygiene and nearness are average. The washroom is quite clean and has all necessary fittings and fixtures.
While booking here, one must consider that this is peaceful place, very near to nature for those who love such environment, bird watchers and trackers. So must not expect 5-star or even 3-star facilities
Food is just like made at home. With limited resources, they are doing commendable job. Staff as usual is very polite and eager to serve, even ready to go out of the way

We thoroughly enjoyed the room and food in this property. Jungle lore made this trip memorable for our family.

Room:
We stayed in Marten cottage which is at the farther corner. The room has an attic and my kids loved it. Based on a few reviews, I was really tensed to have preferred this room. We are in our early 40s with kids and had no problem doing a short walk before and after gulping hot parathas. The room has heaters and good blankets which was sufficient as we visited this property in March.

Staff and Food :
The friendly staffs offered us fruit juices after our tedious birding walk and took care of our food preferences. Bhuvan took care of all the guests with equal care and attention. Worth mentioning about the dog, Bob, he was very caring, accompanied us till the room scaring all the monkeys away. As we go for birding in the morning, the staffs provided packed breakfast in a nice little wooden box.

Birding : They have a good guide, Mahesh. Book him advance besides your stay.

Jungle lore is a hidden paradise in the quaint little town of Pangot. I wanted to work from hills for 2 days and do birding for 2 days. I stayed in the Khalij cottage - its a beautiful cozy cottage a bit away from the main area, some 25 steps down. Surrounded by oak forests, himalayan cherry trees and beautiful views, this lodge itself attracts many birds. It has a covered hide and an open hide shared with another neighbouring property. Wifi in Khalij cottage worked fine one day but was choppy the other day, but manageable. The service and hospitality provided is par excellence, they wont say no to anything (reasonable of course!). The food was so delicious that I ended up overeating every meal - simple home cooked food but so fresh and flavourful. The Kumaoni dishes are a key highlight, do try. Staff is really friendly but also they know how much to mingle with who, if you are in a mood to chat they have many interesting stories, else they give you your privacy. The dining hall is a cozy place with fireplace where you can mingle with other guests or try to befriend Bob (tough one though ;)
Pangot is a birding and scenic paradise, for those interested in birding, go at least 2 days. Mahesh is their excellent in-house guide and great company. The views of Himalayas on the way are surreal. I had over 1000 pics from here in 4 days.
Being a solo traveller, I was thoroughly pampered and always had someone at my service and company when needed. Huge thanks to the team, to the owner for having a vision to make and maintain this place since so many years, and especially to the Manager Bhuvan. Will surely love to go back again.

We spent 2 nights here but could easily have spent 2 weeks. This stay was like a home stay, as we had the place to ourselves. The staff were friendly, warm, happy and helpful and incredibily proud of their place. The food was excellent, the room was spacious, clean and comfortable and we had a breathtaking view from the balcony. Our principal reason for staying here was to see the rich birdlife of the area and we achieved this with the help of our local guide - Mahesh Rajpoot, who was extremely knowledgeable. Even the birds were stunning! The real icing on the cake though was the lack of WiFi because that allowed you to just be there and enjoy the place without distractions.

In popular birding hotspots, usually the resorts can help in hiring a birder. These resorts also keep field guides by renowned birders (The book of Indian Birds by Dr. Salim Ali, Birds of the Indian Subcontinent by Richard Grimmett etc.), these can also be used if you have some basic knowledge and understanding of birds.

it'll be cold enough for sure, but that time you can do good birding. less crowed of non birding guests. so it's a beautiful time. if snow fall will be heavy this year, you might get snow also near around.
