A turn-of-the century jewel set on a knoll, this elegant farmhouse has been in one family for more than 200 years.

When we arrived it was decorated for the holidays, and snow was beginning to fall. It was like stepping into a movie scene. The surrounding landscape was rolling dun farm fields crisscrossed with fencing.

Entering the foyer, its massive newel post seemed the anchor the entire place. We were the only guests at the time so we had our choice of upstairs bedrooms. All had a landscape artist's dream of a view. Some rooms have a dedicated work area; some have more books than others (I raided another room and there was something for everyone - fiction and non, local interest, art, travel), all have an electronic fireplace, TV, and super poufy beds. This poodle was very pleased with the bedding.

The shared-by-all-second-floor-occupants' spacious bathroom was a charming mix of antique and modern. Stone steps led to the garden tub surround which had a bath caddy for guests who wish to soak with a beverage and a a book. There's a also a shower with a river stone floor and a Jack-and-Jill sink. Behind the door is a bin filled with things travelers might have forgotten to pack.

The eat-in kitchen is as well-appointed. There were many Keurig options - coffee, tea, cocoa - and to-go cups. Shelves with puzzles, games and books are along another wall. Guests who don't want to cook can go to Christiansburg. For dinner we like The Farmhouse, Sal's and Macado's. For breakfast and lunch, try Baking is for Lovers, which is right around the corner from Antiques on Main In downtown Christiansburg.

The property is about 10 miles from downtown Christiansburg, Va., eight miles from Radford, Va., and about 25 minutes from Virginia Tech.

The owner is fabulous. We will definitely return.
