The Seehotel Kastanienbaum is located directly on Lake Lucerne with a view of the impressive mountain panorama. The hotel not only has its own vineyard, but also a landing stage for course boats and private boats. The comfortably furnished rooms with lake view open up a breathtaking view of Lake Lucerne and the mountains and invite you to enjoy the peaceful Horw peninsula. Sunbathing on the hotel's own beach rounds off the all-round vacation experience. The kitchen is dedicated to classic dishes, and the service team is particularly happy to serve wines from regional vintners to accompany them.

Detailed Reviews
Do yourself a favor and stay here, just a 15-minute bus ride from the Lucerne transportation center (buses, train station, boats); the bus stop is right at the hotel, and parking at the hotel is free. Parking for other hotels in central Lucerne is usually at public garages and runs about 40 Euros overnight.
The hotel itself is very charming, with a large patio restaurant/lounge overlooking Lake Lucerne and a small vineyard that runs down the steep slope to the banks of the lake. The restaurant's food is quite good; service was so-so one night in the larger dining room, but much better when the very personable Rogerio served us in the smaller sunroom dining area the following evening. The guest rooms are very nice, we chose balcony rooms and had great views of the lake. The facilities are modern and well kept. The Reception staff was very helpful and informative.

I visited with my family for 1 night. There is a large car park. We had lake view rooms with balconies & they had spectacular views across the lake & mountains. The rooms were very clean & spacious with very comfty beds we could have done with some extra pillows in the rooms though. There was also a coffee machine with a selection of pods. With the hotel stay we recurved a free bus pass which we took advantage of & travelled into Lucerne in the evening which was a lovely city with a large choice of shops & restaurants. The breakfast was delicious with an excellent variety of hot & cold food on offer & sitting outside on the terrace overlooking the lake was a lovely setting.

There is building works next to the hotel that was not pointed out before my stay and the huge tower crane is slightly off putting combined with the general construction noise. Also, there were roadworks on both approach roads to the hotel which made me have to U turn on leaving one morning to go back in the opposite direction. Not the hotels fault obviously but nevertheless rather annoying. The rooms get very hot as there is no A/C but the supplied fan made the room bearable if noisy. The balcony blind in my room was very tatty and needs to be replaced. Supplied fruit in the bowl was bruised so I did not eat any of it but was a nice touch. Breakfast was ok but no more than that. On the one meal I ate at the hotel I was shown to a table in the middle of the walkway outside next to the restaurant check in. This left me not only overlooked by guests standing next to me waiting for a table but also subject to passing cigarette smoke. I had not reserved a table so presumed that the empty and better positioned tables were reserved for people, but they remained empty all evening. This was a business trip so I was not overly disappointed in my stay however I stayed here three years ago and the hotel seems to have deteriorated in that time.

Stay for the view only. The hotel had a sterile cheap commercial enterprise feel and atmosphere. Nothing inviting. My wife and I woke early with backaches from the very poor bed / mattress.
Supper was a complete disappointment. The entrecôte was clearly not an entrecôte. When I asked the waitress what the Black Tiger fish was she did not know (it was prawns). The entire meal had the prepackaged microwave taste, appearance and texture to it. Unfortunately at 157 francs it did not have a price commiserate to quality.
Overall the hotel could use some care as carpets are dirty in places and small trees were growing between the tiles on our balcony. Overall not bad on cleanliness.
I travel through region frequently, already four times this year (in the year of COVID lockdown). Value for money in Swiss accommodations appears to be difficult to find.
I will however never return due to bad bed and poor food quality.

Breakfast is just disgusting. There is nothing at all. Every day the same thing. In the hot pot there was a scrambled egg, fried sausages (burnt on the third day), fried bacon, and in the fourth pan there were beans in tomato or tomatoes sprinkled with breadcrumbs. The coffee machine was broken and terrible smoke and noise came out of it, and sometimes it was impossible to pour anything at all. On the second day, the rooms began to smell of sewage in the toilet. There is a possibility that the drains are not cleaned regularly. The building is old, the sewerage needs to be renewed and cleaned. At my request, the cleaning lady came and cleaned it with something. In sunny weather, the pool was closed. There is no normal control over those who rest at breakfast. There is no notebook where you can check in and go eat in peace. Instead, every waiter runs around like an idiot and interrogates several times. It's annoying. There are still a lot of questions to such a miserable breakfast. What was good. This is the place opposite the mountains. There was juice for breakfast, it looked like freshly squeezed juice. Comfortable bed. A good sauna area, with tea, but on the street there was a very strange small round pool with a jacuzzi that had smelly water. After swimming, my skin itched. On the second day, the water in the jacuzzi was cleaner, but I couldn't get in anymore. The area below the pool and the summer veranda, where the steps to the water are, is very unkempt, old and dirty. The waiters usually don't let you sit quietly on the street; you definitely have to order something. The room has a small fridge and a coffee machine, but the water is not heated to 100 degrees. The hotel offers very low-quality shampoos and shower gels. It is better to take your own hygiene products. The end.

I had chosen this hotel for a single night's stay because it seemed to me to be the one with the best quality/price ratio in the area and I must say that I am satisfied with the choice. It's certainly not cheap, but these are Swiss costs.
I really appreciated the fact that, despite having booked a room on the hill side, they instead assigned us one with a view of the lake, given that the hotel was not very busy, without any extra charge.
Comfortable and very clean room, bathroom not large, but more than enough, quiet, wonderful view.
Varied and abundant breakfast, very friendly staff at reception, sober in the room.
Free parking in the hotel area.
The bus stop is a few meters from the entrance, the line takes you quickly to the center of Lucerne and the ticket is offered by the hotel.

I enjoyed a relaxing stay at Seehotel Kastanienbaum. It is very easy to reach by bus from Lucerne. The staff are friendly and helpful. The food is good, and the atmosphere is comfortable. It is definitely worth paying for a room with a view or balcony on the lake; the views are gorgeous.

My wife and I wanted to celebrate our wedding anniversary with an overnight stay and dinner in the chestnut tree. When we checked in we wanted to reserve a table in the restaurant and were informed that no tables were available. This Due to a wedding and another event that was supposed to take place in the restaurant that evening.
For a hotel in this price range (400th/night) we would have expected to be informed in advance about these conditions. Both the expected noise level at a wedding and the lack of restaurant seats would have led us to look for an alternative.
Together with the relatively pronounced sewerage smell in the room led to us leaving immediately. On the positive side, I can only note that we were refunded half of the booking price without discussion.

If you don't necessarily want to/need to stay overnight in Lucerne, the Seehotel Kastanienbaum is the perfect place for you. The location right on the lake with a view of the Bürgenstock is breathtaking. Thanks to the great connection to public transport (16 minutes on the 21 bus to Lucerne) and the boat trip (direct connection to Kehrsiten/Bürgenstock), you can travel very flexibly - without a car!
The food and drinks are very good, the staff in all areas are very friendly and the garden terrace is simply sensational!
A place to switch off and enjoy.
It's definitely worth choosing a room with a balcony (even if they aren't that big). But the view and the view are definitely worth it!
We'd love to come back!

The hotel is in a great location, with a boat stop. Lucerne is only 16 minutes away by bus (bus is free with the guest card and is faster than by car) and 25 minutes by boat.
The room with a lake view was great (you feel like you are on a boat). The restaurant is definitely too expensive for the service....salad 28.-....+ 3 prawns at 12.- each....so 40.-....pasta 27.- with no taste.....a shame.
Breakfast was so-so and at 10:28 everything was slowly taken away....service at breakfast was zero. Nice people but for 350.- per night we would have expected a little more and better quality/service....

Dear guest
Thank you very much for your message.
The easiest way is to catch the train at the airport which brings you directly to Lucerne mainstation. From there you can take bus number 21 departing from platform Q. The Station "Schiffstation" is right in front of our Hotel.
We are looking forward to your visit in June and wish you a nice day!
Kind regards
Your Seehotel Kastanienbaum Team
Dear John, it is allowed to take luggage with you on the bus. Bus Nr 21 is a small bus but usually not too crowded, you shouldn't have a problem taking the luggage with you.
Kind regards from Seehotel Kastanienbaum
