Detailed Reviews
This is a resort on Modessa Island - a gem in the middle of the ocean close to Roxas, Palawan. The staff on the island were wonderful and kind, extremely helpful and welcoming. We stayed in huts on the beachfront which were amazing - lovely inside with an outdoor bathroom. The are limited times for electricity, but nonetheless it was fantastic. The beach itself is fantastic, perfect location for snorkelling which was the highlight of the trip to Modessa. We went with Ryan who was very patient with us and we had an amazing time! The island is also small enough for you to walk round - and you get a great sunrise and sunset. Cannot recommend enough!

If you look for air-con, luxury and high class this is not for you. If you look for a paradise beach, nice staff and relaxation, GO!! Marco met us when we arrived the island and a more kind, smiling and helpful guy you will not find!
We have been here once before. In 2009. It is pretty the same to day.
It is not important which cottage you get, but you sure should book a beachfront villa.
You will have 3 meals included. You might want to bring some snack to have in between the meals.
There are some dogs around at the resort. They are very friendly so do not worry.
We will come back some day!

I recently had the great pleasure of spending two nights/three days on Modessa Island. It is a perfect tropical getaway paradise for a person like me! The family and staff who live and work on the island were very welcoming, always smiling, and eager to help with anything they could provide.
Modessa is a small, idyllic coconut palm-covered island that can be circumnavigated on foot in about twenty minutes. On Google Maps, Modessa shows up as "Coco Loco" (an old name). Getting to the island is a 45 minute boat ride from the town of Roxas, on the mainland of Palawan. The free boat operated by Modessa leaves the wharf in Roxas around 2:00 pm. If you miss it, you may have to take a private boat, which can be quite expensive, so plan on being in Roxas before 2:00 pm. Roxas is a 3 1/2 hour van ride from Puerto Princesa, where the international airport is located.
There are several huts on the island to stay in; very simple and comfortable. There are hammocks throughout the village, a ping-pong table, volleyball court, beautiful coral reefs fringing the island for snorkeling/scuba diving (dive shop available to rent gear or schedule a dive), kayaks for rent, and incredible white sand beaches.
Meals are provided during your stay. They included fresh seafood (shrimp, fish, squid, etc.), fruits, rice and other items such as pasta were available too. I found the meals quite delicious and filling. Free coffee, teas, and drinking water are available. There is also a well-stocked bar with drinks/sodas/snacks for purchase.
Some things you should know and consider if you are thinking about staying a night or two, a week or longer, or if Modessa may not be the right "fit" for you:
Electricity is provided from the hours of 6:00 pm to 8:00 am, and 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm only! This is to run lights and fans at night. It really isn't needed any other time of the day. There is no air conditioning on the island. If you need to be in a sealed-up, air conditioned room, Modessa may not be the place for you. The sea breezes and fans were enough for me to feel comfortable while sleeping.
Fresh water must be imported onto the island, so it is available for drinking and cooking only! The showers are saltwater. It doesn't take long to get accustomed to saltwater showers, but if you feel you must have a freshwater shower every day, this may not be a good place for you.
Bring insect repellent. Mosquitoes, flies, and some other insects enjoy tropical weather, too. I didn't use repellent, and probably did not receive more than five or six mosquito bites the whole time I was here. There were no biting flies here while I visited, a problem I encountered on the mangrove beaches of mainland Palawan.
If you want to party all night to loud music, disco lights, and drunken tourists passing out on the beach, Modessa may not be the place for you. There is a well-stocked bar in the main community hut, and music can be played (cannot be heard from the living huts), and plenty of tables and areas are provided to get to know others staying on the island, but this is not a Party Animal kind of place. All I could hear late at night were the waves and breezes in the palms.
There is wi-fi available, but it can be difficult to maintain at times. If you feel you must have super-fast/always-available internet so you can update your Facebook every five minutes, and count the "Likes" from your last selfie, this may not be the best place for you.
It is a perfect place to "get away from it all" if that is what you want to do. I will return when I visit Palawan again. T.B.W.

We have been to coco loco 3 times before the new owners took over. Unfortunately we did not even make it to the resort as the resort kept us waiting 4 hours with our children for a boat and then offered a boat that was beyond dangerous - we have lived in Asia for over 15 years and have been going to the Phils for years so we know what to expect and this little boat was not even a banca - even the boat men suggested the 2 hour journey across the straight would not be safe with our Children 4 and 5 years old. So after arguing and waiting for now 5 hours as sunset we stayed in Roxas and returned back to Manila the next day. We had booked 4 nights on the island - paid for flights and changed everything as we were shocked at how we were treated. To say the least we were so very disappointed our island paradise no longer cared if we came again or not.

If you check my profile, I reviewed this hotel when it was still Coco Loco because I had a great experience with them and to my disappointment, my next visit or should I say attempted visit was a DISASTER.Â
We booked thru EPALAWAN (I also warn you not to trust them as they do not know what they are doing as well). We are group of American, European and Filipino - 4adults and 2 kids aged 3 and 4 years old.
It was all smooth starting from Manila to Puerto Prinsesa airport to the nice van until we get to the Roxas Port. A lady in pink shirt named Sally welcomed us at the Port but told us to wait for 5 minutes. She said she works for Modessa. It was a warm welcome and she asked us to stay at the 2nd floor of the restaurant and gave us a menu to order our lunch so when we get to the island, which is by the way could take up to 2 hours banca ride (depending on the weather).
After 10 mins, she told us we had to wait a little bit as more people are arriving. We are all relaxed, happy and very excited to visit the island again. After an hour or so, we told her we have to take the boat before it gets dark as we have 2 kids with us. To our disappointment, she was giving us a boat without the outrigger, even saying, it's like a 'speed boat'. Of course, we complained and then another boat arrived with outrigger but it is also small for 6 people and very DANGEROUS; let me note that the wave is strong that day, even other boat men were confirming it. Again we complained and looked for the big boat that they always use. Obviously this is not our first time to go there BUT our first time to go under new management. So either we won't make it to that island or we will be soaking wet with crying, seasick kids. She made some calls and looked very tensed until she suggested for me to call the manager to ask for the big boat.
I speak tagalog and I asked him nicely that we need the big, usual boat that we take and here's his rude replied "you are late, the big boat leaves at 2pm". NO ONE - not even the travel agent told us about the 2pm rule. I told him that it is not acceptable as the last time we were there, we took that boat around 530pm (which probably is already against the coast guard law if there's any?). He was angry and said it is the rule of the new management and we have to follow. We told him the only rule that we all should follow is that "Customer is always right!." Honestly, we are very easy to please (knowing that we are staying in old huts) BUT WE ARE NOT GOING TO RISK OUR KIDS' LIVES - THAT IS VERY UNFAIR TO THE KIDS.
So to summarize it all, some of us wasted their vacation leave from their work, our friends spent money to fly from Singapore to Manila for this 6-months long preparation vacation, we again spent hundreds of dollars for our flight from Manila to Puerto Prinsesa, we paid 9000 for the van and travelled 2-hours each way just to get stuck at Roxas town and then we paid another 1600 for the pension rooms in Roxas. The travel agent tried to convince us to go there the next morning but who would want to deal with these people again. We got a refund for the rooms but we didn't get any for the van telling us 'we were the ones who didn't want to take the small boat.' What a great way to handle a hospitality business. Guess it is just fair for me to say, AVOID THIS RESORT and think twice about EPALAWAN travel agency. There are other islands in the Philippines that you can try.

There are many other options around the Palawan than Coco Loco (Modessa) Resort.
The food here is absolutely horrendous and half was blatantly inedible. The accommodation has seen better days and pieces are all falling off day by day.
My partner and I would certainly never return despite being regular visitors to beautiful Palawan.

even the name changed to modessa island is these island still my favorite place to go in palawan. The beach in front of our room was perfect and even rooms where simple like they have always been we enjoyed our stay.new mattresses and bedding's are improving the sleeping quality from before and it was absolute quiet during our stay.Service is simple once a while but the perfect snorkeling and diving possibility's just in front of our bungalows made our stay perfect.where can you find still find a good - perfect reef without going on a boot tour.even prices went up a bit from our previous stay (like everywhere) still a good place to go even for families.food was from better quality than before i would say.all in all still a highlight from palawan
dive shop is still existing and i would say a perfect place to do a diving course or refresher

The island itself is beautiful. It is less than an hours boat ride from Roxas. Several boats come and go each day.
Unfortunately about a year ago a major coral bleaching event killed almost all coral. It is still nice for snorkeling.
We also did a few scuba dives. The place doesn't claim to be the greatest dive spot on earth. Depending on your expectations you can be very disappointed or find it enjoyable We found it enjoyable and the dive centre well run and very accommodating.
Electricity is on from evening till morning. The huts are simple and bathrooms a little bit run down. Each hut has its own hammock and beach chairs and a nice view of a well cleaned beach.
The food was simple and taste-wise it ranged between great and mediocre. The selection is not very big and often items are not available. The portions were good, we are small eaters and always shared one main.
But the service is bad. Especially for 110AUD (~90USD) a night considering the cost of living and wages in this region.
A few examples: the only drinkable water on the island are two water dispensers in the restaurant area. Twice in five days the water dispensers were both empty.
When we felt like having some juice in the afternoon, we couldn't find anyone to order it from. During dinner we asked when we can order juice or similar in the afternoon and we were told from 5 pm on. So we tried that the next day and didn't see anyone till around 6pm. Another day we did get something but even then it felt we intruded on their time, a feeling that we had many times during our stay.
It seemed that we really inconvenience the staff with our presence. E.g. several times there were no plastic cups in the instant coffee & tea area or the some other part was missing. When something was missing, it would take half a day or longer to get replaced or refilled and only once we finally found someone to ask about it.
The cups sometimes tasted salty (ie bore water was used to clean it).
The same "we are out of mango, papaya, etc" happened a few times. Considering that there are several boats coming and leaving each day, we thought their stock management was underwhelming. They were even out of coconuts.
We had a worker sleep in "our" hammock even though there we plenty vacant huts left and right and ours was clearly occupied. Later in the evening you could find part of the staff playing pool and occupying the lounge area in the restaurant so none of the guests could use it. The sunset viewing platform was probably originally meant to have a nice dinner with a view, but now is used as a sleeping area.
There were several similarly small things which combined left us feeling slightly unwelcome and underwhelmed.

Hello, I believe you meant to ask this question to the resort owner. I received the message in response to a review I wrote. Enjoy Modessa! It's quite amazing.
