Although from the outside the building looked a bit of a shocker we were told they had recently had some building work done as the roof had been damaged in the recent storms . The manager Ann was very enthusiastic in her welcome and although we were put in the wrong room initially we were quickly moved to the right room which was up just one flight of stairs and was lovely and cosy. The room was clean and everything we needed was there. The bathroom was quite modern and the shower was excellent. I would come to this hotel again although there is a downside . It is at the top of a long hill leading into Durham city and although going out would be easy coming back would be a bit of a trek but as that’s the only downside I’d be happy to get a taxi back . There is a bar and Indian restaurant attached to the hotel but is reached from the outside . We had not made a reservation but they managed to squeeze us in and while we waited to eat the cocktails were 2 for 1 between 5 and 6.30 so a couple of those filled the time in the restaurant is hoti and bhang ( they also do takeaway)

We stayed for 3 nights and found the whole experience excellent. Right from ringing our booking in, with the super helpful and friendly Anna, to the super breakfasts and comfy bed. We also ate in the "in house" Indian Restaurant, which included one of the best Tikka Masala that I have ever eaten. Quirky and friendly (and importantly) very very good value for money. A short walk to Durham City Centre too. We will definitely be returning. Tony & Fiona

Anna was a breath of fresh air from start to finish ! Top helpful from helping us find a taxi on new year's eve at late notice to helping us with drinks late on. We stayed in the Cathedral View room one of the attic rooms. My boyfriend is 6ft 6 and plenty of head height! We even looked to buy one of the mattresses like the one we slept on, it was that comfy! Room was spacious with great views and facilities and the room was warm

Stayed for a night with my daughter. Close to town and quiet location. Great room, clean with lovely linens and comfy bed. Hotel is quirky and fun. We ate in the Indian restaurant attached which was really nice. Breakfast was delicious with lots of choice and lovely breakfast room with a view. Anna is just fabulous and makes the hotel. Would definitely return next time I’m visiting my daughter

We stayed in a lovely room - twin beds as for my Auntie and myself, on Suite room - wonderful breakfast - lovely staff - can't thank them enough for a great stay. So close to the city - you can see the cathedral and castle from the dining area. Clean and very friendly. Will be coming back

Lovely welcome, great stay, delicious breakfast. Clean and comfy room, can’t ask for more. Anna is so attentive, welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. We had two small dogs with us and she was so accommodating and made it such a lovely stay for all. We arrived by train and were able to check in early and leave our bags while we explored Durham on foot and again when we checked out. The dogs got a special breakfast made for them and it was their first taste of black pudding which they loved. We enjoyed a yummy cocktail from Holi and Bang in the evening and really enjoyed our tasty breakfast next morning. Nice walk into town through all the interesting wee streets. Overall a great stay, thank you Anna and family.

Well located for the town centre although it's a steep walk which didn't concern us. Very clean throughout and a nice big bed which we are used to at home. Room cold though (12) which was a shame. Breakfast good and a nice dining room. Anna made us very welcome and works so hard. Thank you Anna

Just to thank all the crew for a great stop over. Typical Geordie hospitality led by Anna ! Excellent hospitality in comfortable surroundings. Food at breakfast was just what you’d expect in a 4 star hotel. Shame we couldn’t stay an extra night to sample the I dian res adjacent.. if the smell was anything to go by! Such a shame it’s slightly out of town but a £4 taxi ride didn’t deter us. Already planning our next trip. Thanks to all
