I stayed at the castle for 2 nights in a standard courtyard double. Having checked the website I am wondering where half of the amenities were as my room didn't have them. There was no wardrobe, iron, hairdryer, telephone, alarm clock hand sanitizer,as stated. Pretty standard stuff expected in a hotel room these days. The room had atrocious sound insulation from both above and the sides, and a window (at ground level onto the car park right in front) that was left open but was too high up for me to close. I had made the mistake of booking room only and found that I could not book breakfast or dinner both days as they were fully booked with wedding guests. As I don't drive this meant that I had to get taxis out to dinner and breakfast, and on the Sunday there were no cafes open in Chester-le-st for breakfast, so I had to wait until I had got to my day out destination that day. The castle itself is superb, and I'm sure the rooms inside are very special and do not have these drawbacks. The situation of the castle makes it somewhere I cannot stay again because I don't drive. The local public transport is poor and its very costly to get taxis everywhere. I have seen many premium hotels offer a shuttle bus to the nearest town, which would have been perfect for me. They should run a shuttle bus to Durham station. Overall, I felt I could not fully experience the Castle as I could not eat there, and seemed to spend all my time booking restaurants and taxis.

On arrival we waited (standing 2nd in line) to check in for ages because of what seemed to be a computer problem. The hastily shouted directions to our room would prompt me to suggest you bring your sat nav. We were allocated to Room 57 (Castle Keep) on the second floor. We had light luggage which was just as well as you have to scale 2.5 sets of stairs to reach the second floor as the lift only reaches the first floor. Then a round the houses treck to find the room. The room was small. The toilet is accessed down a mini corridor off one side of the room by stepping through the shower tray. Potentially hazardous for folks especially if needing to nip to the loo at night! The decor was traditionally wallpapered in dark paper but it looked shabby and the paint finishes were damp and flakey I would say don’t be taken in by the romance in the adverts.

Brilliant visit! Lovely castle set on a golf course. Stayed one night. rooms not as big as expected and mirrors not near socket for hairdryer. But just minor detail. Rooms clean, great towels and boiling hot water in shower, which was great . But make sure get temperature right before getting in shower. Visited for Sunday lunch - you must enroll with the hotel scheme - and get vouchers/ same price lunch but free bottle wine (£20 each/3 course/coffee/free bottle wine). Then had late evening meal - same again get the £60 voucher with free bottle wine as get £30 each towards evening meal. Also ate breakfast in hotel- included. Food and staff absolutely amazing! Would definitely recommend but would enroll with lumley castle for lots of extra discounts. Thank you for a fantastic stay !

We booked a 3 night Romantic Lazy Break in a Castle Superior Room. Our first holiday for over a year. It was certainly not lazy and the room was definitely not superior. On checking in, we were given our room key and vague directions to our room (number 59) which was difficult to find. Indeed, we had to ask other staff for further directions. We were horrified to find that there was no public lift and we had to stagger up 65, yes 65, stairs to reach our room at the top of the tower. Assistance with cases is not available because of Covid so we had to struggle breathlessly with our cases whilst wearing a mask. I find it inexcusable that a room which is so inaccessible should be given to a couple in their 80's. Nowhere on the hotel website did I find any warning about there being no lift. I think it is irresponsible that the hotel have no measures in place which ensure that guests are allocated appropriate rooms. So far as our "superior state room" was concerned, it was attractive but impractical. There were no drawers for our clothes so we had to live out of our suitcases for 3 days. Lighting was very low level and the window was tiny. We couldn't see to read and the tv only offered BBC. No other channels were available. My wife commented that one could feel like a prisoner because it was difficult to go down to the Bar or garden as this meant a repeat of the climb up the very long staircase. We were advised that room service was optional. We were on holiday and looking forward to a bit of pampering so we requested room service. This materialised on one morning only. It is sad to write a negative review and, in hindsight, we recognise that we should have objected to the location of our room when we first arrived. Perhaps our generation were brought up in an age when you didn't make a fuss.
