AX The Palace garners appreciation for its spacious rooms and exceptional service, with guests highlighting the staff's attentiveness and professionalism. While the hotel offers commendable amenities like large beds and pools, and the cleanliness is often applauded, some reviewers point out minor issues and a lack of natural light in the rooms. Although opinions on value are mixed, with some citing high room rates, the location receives consistent praise for its convenience. The hotel's atmosphere is generally seen as relaxing, despite occasional noise and character concerns.

We have just returned from 9 nights at the Ax Palace, and this was my experience.

All the staff without exception are friendly and helpful, nothing is too much trouble.

We stayed in an executive room on the seventh floor. The room was large with a huge bed very comfortable bedding and soft pillows. The balcony gave picturesque views of Valletta and the room and accompanying bathroom were kept immaculate by the cleaning staff. On the seventh floor we were too high up to hear any street noise and the hotel in general was very quiet which meant a good night’s sleep, very important to both of us.

The outdoor pool on the seventh floor was again very clean with beautiful views to the sea, although the water is very cold. The indoor pool is also clean but of course much warmer.

If I have any negatives about the hotel they mainly concern the food. Although the restaurants are clean and at breakfast there a choice of cooked, fruit and pastries, I consider the food to be below par for that of a five star hotel. The cooked breakfast with the exception of omelettes has been cooked for some time, the fruit is lacklustre, and disappointing. Pears, cut and left to go brown, orange segments, and two types of melon. On three occasions there were strawberries but no other berries or mango, guava etc.

One evening we ate in TemptAsian The hotel’s ‘award-winning’ restaurant, and although as with the rest of the hotel the staff were friendly and helpful and the view from the ninth floor was very attractive, the food was disappointing. We both had different dishes but found them to be very highly salted, and deterred us from returning.

The worst meal we had in the hotel was in the Tabloid restaurant on ‘Maltese night’, basically the food was just not up to the standard of a 5 star hotel, chewy meat, over cooked vegetables and greasy potatoes.

In conclusion, The Palace is not an unpleasant place to stay, but lacks real 5 star touches. Apart from the food, there are other things that let it down, such as the shower over the bath. In an executive room in a 5 star hotel, I expect a dedicated shower, not to have to clamber in and out of a bath which I suspect no one ever uses.

Having said all this we still enjoyed our stay, mainly due to the nice room and lovely staff.

My husband and I stayed at this hotel for a week at the end of November. We travelled with Jet2 and had booked an executive room on the 7th floor. Check in was fine, but our room wasn't ready so we left our luggage and went a walk by the time we returned our room was ready and our luggage was brought up separately by one of the staff. The room was, large and well appointed with everything you would expect. The bathroom had, separate shower, toilet and bath and the hairdryer was one of the most powerful I have come across in a hotel room. I requested extra pillows for the bed and this was done straight away. The balcony was a good size and had a view towards the sea. My only complaint was that it looked directly into hospital rooms next door and didn't seem to get the sun. There is a large television in the room but it didn't get British Channels apart from the news and the only other one I could find was challenge tv showing programmes from thirty years ago. When I asked at reception they said it wasn't possible to get British TV I don't know if this has anything to do with Brexit, however would have thought with a five star hotel we,would have received more choice of channels. We had only booked bed and breakfast and always found plenty of choice from cereals and fresh fruit to hot dishes and freshly prepared omelettes we were spoiled for choice. The restaurant staff were always cleaning and resetting tables and appeared happy in their work and always had a,smile and good morning greeting for you. We did eat in the hotel one evening and the food and service were fantastic. The reception staff were helpful when I had a problem with my key card and dealt with it straight away advising me not to keep it near my phone as this messes with the card. Overall we had a good stay at this hotel. The rooms were cleaned daily and changed towels and toiletries when required. I cannot fault them in this regard. However where I did find fault was with the ongoing maintenance work which was taking place on floor five which started from early morning right through the full day. The grinder on the balcony was very loud and was my wake up alarm most mornings. I would have appreciated if the hotel reception had warned us off this and advised us off this ongoing maintenance as it was really noisy. I found reception staff to be helpful but not overly friendly. When we checked in the girl asked us if it was our first time in Malta I had said it was a very belated visit but she did not engage in conversation apart to explain the hotel itself. The location of the hotel is at the top of a steep hill, but close to all amenities. Overall we had a pleasant stay here and I would recommend it. It appeared to get a,lot of returning visitors which speaks volumes for the hotel itself. I would return to this hotel but ask them for a room not overlooking the hospital.

It's was our first time in Malta so we took a while deciding on the hotel, it turned out that we chose perfectly!
We booked an executive (level 7) room and had a beautiful view, the room was huge, modern and spotlessly clean. Huge comfortable bed (if you need firmer pillows just ask and they will bring you some)

The food in the buffet was outstanding, breakfast is the usual offerings that you get everywhere, but in the evenings they do different themes on certain days, for example Saturday is grill night, they cook all the meat and fish outside and the choice is amazing, steak, tuna, swordfish, ribs, chicken etc.
If you are half board you will receive half a bottle of wine per person with dinner, plus if you want to use one of the other restaurants you will recieve €16 euros per person credit towards the bill.
One particular member of staff who stood out to us at the main restaurant was Khine, what a lovely lady and an asset to the hotel!

The pools and pool bar are lovely with nice views, ine complaint would be that fir a 5 star hotel the sunbeds could be better quality, they are just basic with no padding which was a real shame.
There is happy hour at the pool 3-5 daily with BOGOF cocktails.
Our stand out member of staff at the pool bar was Dominica, again an absolute asset to the hotel, friendly and welcoming, we enjoyed our daily chats with her 😀
(Hope the tan is coming along ok 😉)

There is a Lidl literally doors away to the left as you leave the lobby, plus a smaller lovely little supermarket, same direction, just a little further away, called 'Little Greens' definitely worth a visit for a nicer selection and different produce.

The hotel is in a super location for either the sea side or the harbour side, both being aporox 10 mins walk.

There is an app called Bolt which is similar to uber but cheaper, we used this a few times.

We stayed for a week at the Palace, Sliema, 28th Jan - 4th Feb 2025. This is an excellent hotel with charming, enthusiastic, and professional staff. Housekeeping was immaculate and thorough every day. On check-in we were given a free upgrade from a Comfort to a Deluxe room including shared rooftop garden. Breakfast is buffet style service and whilst this isn’t my preferred option, every morning all dishes were fresh and constantly replenished, with fresh fried egg and omelette station, plus freshly made waffles/pancakes/french toast depending on the day. We didn’t try the buffet dinner but did eat at the bar/cafe on the ground floor one night which was very good. Well located for most things in Sliema, another reviewer mentioned hills but I don’t think you can escape this in Malta so hardly the hotel’s fault. We had a great stay and always felt looked after. Whilst we had no major issues, I felt confident that they would have been dealt with easily based on my experiences with all staff members.

What a lovely hotel with the most helpful, warm and genuine staff. Located just a few 100 m from the Sliema coast on two sides, this five star hotel is unlikely to disappoint. If your budget permits, book one of their designer suites on the 7th, 8th and 9th floors. We had the View suite, which lives up to its name, with 270 degree views across to Valetta and beyond. The suite is the size of an apartment, with two balconies, one of which sports a jacuzzi in which you can relax and admire the view, then retire to the sunbeds or chairs, or move indoors to watch one of the two TVs or relax with a glass of wine or two ... or three! The hotel offers two restaurants and a café, an infinity pool and sundeck on the top (9th) floor and a spa with indoor pool, sauna, steam room, loungers and terrace. And of course massage and other treatments. Everyone we met gave us a warm welcome and could not be more helpful, from the reception staff Navodga, Simba and others, to valet parking/delivering our car, to room attendants and restaurant waiters and others. And they made our special occasion all the more so with some complementary wine delivered to our suite. The breakfast was comprehensive and expansive, with something I suspect, for most dietary requirements. We would not hesitate to stay again when visiting Malta. It seems churlish to mention a few points, but if I did not, I suspect some might think this review a fake! The View Suite whilst wonderful, is directly below the restaurant and noise transference did disturb, most evenings and early mornings, so if you value your lie-ins (and who doesn't on holiday) ask if there are functions occurring during your stay. We were offered another stunning suite, the Music Suite (with its two King-sized beds and full drum kit, lovely bathroom, balcony jacuzzi, etc.), but we decided that we would put up with the transient disturbance for the superior views from our jacuzzi!! For breakfast, fresh juices rather than pasteurised and fresh ground coffee, rather than what was available, would be more appropriate in a 5-Star hotel. But there ends the gripe ... I wouldn't let it deter you from sampling this lovely gem of a hotel.

We have just returned from a 9 night stay at the AX Palace and the quality of service throughout the whole hotel was exceptional. Every single member of staff was helpful and enthusiastic in their desire to provide the highest quality service. In particular I would like to mention Lawrence Vella (I hope I have his name right) in the Talk of the Town. Lawrence is Maltese and I was chatting to him about authentic Maltese food and he provided me with plenty of suggestions where this could be obtained. Also the lady who welcomed us for breakfast (sadly I neglected to make a note of her name) had the cheeriest and brightest smile to start the day.
We opted for one of their executive rooms on the seventh floor (at 224 euros per night), as we wanted a balcony with a sea view. It was very spacious and has one of the biggest beds I have ever come across. It was at least 8 foot wide, very comfortable and the pillows were very soft too. The daily room service kept it immaculate. It lacked a few amenities no ice making facilities in the room, the small fridge didn’t have anything and strangely, the shower was over the bath. A serious oversight in an executive room in a 5 star hotel at this price, I think.
The daily two cocktails for 12 euros between 17:00 and 19:00 were a favourite that we enjoyed thoroughly too.
However, then there was the food. We tried all of the restaurants in the hotel and to be honest I have eaten better food in 3 star establishments. I will restrict my comments to two of the meals we ate, both taken in the Tabloid. Firstly breakfast, it is a buffet style more reminiscent of a canteen, plenty of choice but the food is not particularly attractive or, in my view, wholesome. I steered clear of the hot food mainly restricting myself to the cold buffet and the Maltese ftira (bread) with tomatoes (making myself a sort of Hobz biz zejt). If you go to almost any bed and breakfast in the UK they will prepare a full English breakfast to order. Yes you may have to wait 10 minutes but at least you know it will be good. We also attended the Maltese night special on the Tuesday and I sampled the following meats Pork; Lamb and the Rabbit spaghetti, in each case the meat was tough and chewy. Again not good enough for a 5 star establishment. I will not pass further comment on the other restaurants, other than to stay we were not overly impressed with them either and ended up going out of the hotel to eat, even though we had a 10% discount card as part of our deal!
I am always reluctant to carry out post visit assassinations of places that I have been too, If you read my other reviews you will see that I generally highly rate the places that we visit. The brutal truth is that AX The Palace, it’s facilities and all of the wonderful members of staff we met are let down by a few strange amenity omissions and a more general lack of attention to the food that they serve, and therefore, in my opinion it is not deserving of their 5 star status.

I booked a weeks holiday at The Palace, Sliema due to being a 5 star hotel in a central location and offering what appeared near perfect amenities and service.

On first impressions were the hotel lived up-to it’s 5 star rating. The staff are all very welcoming, polite and helpful.

The twin room was spacious and clean. Sadly, we had a few issues on arrival including a broken kettle, a broken (dangerous) desk lamp, a room door that didn’t lock properly and the beds were not made as twins (clearly stated this in the booking). Most of these issues were resolved promptly but some took several more phone calls to reception. Also, the Daily room service was inadequate on occasions, such as not replacing towels, leaving their personal drinks bottles in our room, not making the beds properly (just pulling over the duvet) and not taking the laundry (causing a 3 day delay) when requested.

Although these issues were resolved when mentioned to reception this is not something I should have had to do nearly everyday of my holiday considering it’s a 5 star hotel.

Dining - we were half board and all meals were buffet style (I would not have booked half board if it was made clear on the website all meals were buffet style). Breakfast was great and had plenty of choice. Although the hot choices weren’t hot as the dining room was constantly cold due to having the Aircon on permanently (it was November not the height of summer) by the time you were seated after choosing your meal it was lukewarm/cold. Sadly, the evening buffet was the same, as the dining room was very cold and the hot choices soon became cold after choosing. When asked to turn the Aircon off/warmer temperature I was told this wasn’t possible.
Therefore, we decided to eat in the sister hotel, The Victoria and the talk of the town cafe as the food was freshly prepared and hot, and very tasty.
I can also highly recommend the Temptasian restaurant as the food choices were outstanding along with the quality of the food. We received a €16pp credit for meals ordered outside the standard restaurant.

The pool areas both indoors and on the roof terrace were lovely and there were towels available for use, there was also bar service available on the roof terrace. These areas are also shared with the Victoria hotel next door.

Overall, our holiday was lovely, and although I would recommend The Palace as a great place to stay in Sliema, I do not think it is worthy of its 5 star status, albeit this could easily be rectified and standards improved if the hotel wanted to up its game - a recommendation could be to ask all guests to complete questionnaires about their experience after check out but I didn’t and haven’t received this which is disappointing as this could really improve the overall quality of this hotel.

Enjoyed a weeks B&B stay through Jet com holidays in a superior room with sea view.
Yes there was a sea view in room 636 and balcony but not looking towards Valletta. The room was comfortable and spacious and was cleaned daily. Unfortunately the beds had plastic coated mattress covers which did not help with sleep. I eventually removed mine which solved the issue.
Breakfast choices were extensive and varied and fresh omelettes were cooked to order.
Staff are friendly, helpful and efficient.
The dusting of lamp standards in rooms and beautiful glass chandeliers in the bar area certainly needed attention.
It is a good base for sightseeing and the ferry at the bottom of the road is easy to use to visit Valletta. Local bus stops are easily accessed too and reception had current bus and ferry timetables available.
Plenty of restaurants to sample on the sea front.
The roof top area is ideal for sun bathing and the pool was still available in November.
The roof top restaurant is excellent with super night time views of Valletta. We enjoyed the Lotus menu on our first evening and the Indian special on our last evening . Both quite pricey but well worth the money.

When we saw our superior room on the eighth floor we were thrilled with the view, the oversized comfortable bed, the large bath room with bath, walk in shower and everything you could wish for in toiletries. The towels were soft and white and we had towelling robes, a convenient bonus. We found the fridge and coffee making facilities tucked round the corner where we chilled our water, provided every day. The Temptation restaurant offered wonderful views, food and service. Nothing was too much trouble for the lovely staff. Although we dined out occasionally, we paricularly enjoyed eating on the terrace of the hotel's Talk of the Town after enjoying a cocktail or two during happy hour. Even though the bar/restaurant was busy the service was impressive especially from Lawrence who had been there several years and spoke highly of the hotel management. The food was excellent and we particularly enjoyed the steak, salmon and tacos. We used the outside infinity pool nearly every day even though it was very cold! The area was beautiful and spotless but the beds were arranged in straight rows and you were either in complete sun or total shade! The service once again was friendly and efficient and we thought Jake, who is training to be a pilot, was attentive and helpful. The only sour note of the holiday was caused by the sparkling water they served at a price of 4. 50 € a bottle. It had a best before date of February 2022 and we were served it in June. The young woman I pointed this out to, while lovely and reassuring, saying she drank it herself, basically dismissed my concerns. I notice a man refusing to pay for it a few days later but they continued to serve it after this! Nevertheless, this was a minor blip in a fantastic holiday, made so by the exceptional and friendly staff from reception, housekeeping, porters as well as the staff who waited on us. They all had a smile and a greeting. For us it was the staff who mad our holiday superb.

I was looking for something to surprise my fiancé this Christmas and whilst looking for the perfect place to stay, I came across this beautiful five star hotel. Upon entering not only were we mesmerised by the warm and welcoming atmosphere of the foyer but also with how kind and nice the staff were with us. We were offered a small complementary drink each and one of the staff members kindly offered us his help whilst carrying our bags and other belongings up into our room. Upon entering our suite, not only the design and furniture but also the scent of the room were delightful! Cleanliness was top too! We also had a lovely view out of our balcony. We loved our room to the littlest of details. Our suite was equipped with everything we could ever come in need of such as a hair dryer, an electric kettle, a small fridge, an iron and ironboard, bathrobes & bed slippers. Also, we never ran out of soap, shampoo & conditioner as well as other supplies such as coffee, tea and sugar
sachets and bottled water, as these were replaced whenever necessary. Also, the room’s temperature was perfect, neither too hot not too cold. Our stay included breakfast every morning. We’d like to honourably mention the great staff service we experienced and the abundance and a wide selection of food we could have every day in the breakfast room.
Thus, having experienced such good care from the hotel administration, we had a wonderful stay and we will definitely come back!!! Thank you AX!

We never had a problem finding two together. There’s a smaller adults only pool on the level below the main pool and there are quite a few loungers there as well.
