101 Hotel earns acclaim for its modern, clean rooms and helpful staff, with the hotel's central Reykjavik location being a highlight for guests eager to explore the city. However, some guests have called out issues with noise from nearby clubs and streets, impacting their sleep, and others mention the lack of USB chargers and design inefficiencies in rooms.
While the atmosphere is deemed stylish, the value proposition is questioned due to high costs and unexpected charges, leaving room for improvement in guest satisfaction.

Detailed Reviews
Poorly designed rooms:
Bathrooms have no doors nor separation from the bedroom.
No storage space other than a small hanging rail and 3 wall mounted open cubes.
No electricity sockets anywhere near the beds.
Blinds not made to fit the windows with big gaps on either sides. In the winter this is not an issue but In summer it would definitely be.
Poor soundproofing. However during covid there are curfews so the noise from the bars is not an issue.
Amenities and service:
Good housekeeping twice a day. Nice Aveda toiletries for free, however you have to pay for anything else ( shaving lots, toothbrush, female kit…). Decent hair dryer, bathrobe and slippers provided though.
Friendly staff all over.
Room were not inspected before check in. First room the heating was not working. Second room had 2 dead squashed mosquitos stuck on the blinds!
When I asked for still water instead of sparkling complementary water someone suggested I drank the tap water. Only one offered per stay.
Very limited selection at breakfast and restaurant food menu.
Bar closed on Sundays and Mondays, again possibly due to covid.
I never stay in 4 star hotels so I am not sure if this is the standard in 4 stars and can’t compare it like for like to anything else I’ve experienced. And to be honest had I known the edition had opened I would have gone there without hesitation. But this one was recommended by friends who had visited Iceland before edition had opened and it was probably the best option then.
It is probably not a bad hotel if you’re not a fussy demanded guest I guess and it is quite pleasant if you look past the room issues. It even has a little gym and spa and some interesting art.

Overall I really liked this hotel - the rooms are modern, clean, and comfortable although a little more closet space would be nice. We received upgraded rooms, which was a nice touch as there was an email glitch that did not forward my confirmation, so I wasn't 100% sure we had a room when we arrived late at night (but we did!)
We stayed twice during our trip, and I would definitely stay here again. The staff were very friendly and accommodating, and the location to the sights, shops, and restaurants of Reykjavik are all easy walking distance. There are parking garages nearby too if you cannot get (or fit into) the 6 spots the hotel has reserved. We had nice views from both our rooms.
Be aware that there are bars nearby that are very popular on weekends so you may hear some street noise during your stay (obviously not the hotel's fault.) But this is the same anywhere you stay downtown in Reykjavik. Earplugs are available, and I use a white noise app on my phone, which helps.

The hotel is right in the middle of most area sights and had a great view of the harbor. However, we did get the techno party noise as mentioned by a prior reviewer, and we had forgotten to ask specifically for a room away from the noise. There are rooms where you don't hear it at all, our daughter's room was directly facing the harbor and she didn't hear it. The hallways are VERY dark, but the rooms very bright. The staff was super helpful and friendly, we had an early departure for a tour the next day and they boxed some breakfast for us prior to the breakfast opening time.

Booked this hotel for January 2020 trip -- booked one night for arrival in Iceland, and one night three days later after a tour. I've been to Iceland several times, but decided to try this hotel on this trip because of its Marriott connection.
First booked night: Icelandair cancelled our flight from USA to Keflavik a day before the trip because of bad weather at KEF, so I called the hotel and cancelled the room more than 24 hours before scheduled check-in. Hotel still charged us $300+ for the room for the night I cancelled. I'm a Marriott platinum elite, so Marriott contacted the hotel twice to attempt to get a refund on my behalf. The hotel refused.
Second booked night: We stayed at the hotel and had a comfortable room and no major issues.
Summary: OK hotel physically, but the hotel management appear to be more interested in getting revenue for service not provided than in customer satisfaction. Iceland is a wonderful place to visit, and we had a great experience with Arctic Adventures, but this hotel is the epitome of greed and poor customer support. There are several other better hotels in Reykjavik.

Dear Kitty Howk, I appreciate you choosing to reserve at our hotel, and I have attempted to reach out to you but have not received a response. Unfortunately, I am not able to identify your reservation with us and quite frankly it was incredibly disappointing to read your comments. It would have been great for us to have had the conversation with you directly. I'm writing this review as I saw a rash of 1 star reviews which almost swayed me from staying here despite my desire for a Marriott Bonvoy affiliated property. Following my stay, my suspicions were confirmed that the reviews were more COVID related angst versus reality.
The 101 is a fantastic "boutique hotel" right with a "modern" design sensibility in the heart of Old Town. It's centrally located and a 5 to 10 minute walk in any direction will bring you to a multitude of bars and restaurants, museums and other assorted sights. The room itself was clean with an interesting open layout including a free-standing bathtub and separate shower. In my opinion it's a 4+ star hotel in a neighborhood where true 5 star hotels don't exist perhaps until the Edition opens.
As regards the "noise" mentioned in the previous review, there was one Friday evening where the rooftop bar next door had the music pounding until about midnight. It didn't bother me much but realize that every room in the hotel will likely be impacted differently and best to see if the front desk can accommodate if that's a concern.

The rooms are designed with great care offering comfort and a great night’s sleep after a long day of exploring.
Last but not least the hotel is situated right in the heart of Reykjavik where so many must- sees are within walking distance!
We hope we will 101 again in the near future!

This hotel is in a great location, across the street from the downtown Tour Bus stop #6, making it very convenient for the airport bus and all the bus tours. Every tour company picks up there. The neighborhood around it is full of restaurants, bars, and shops. It's centrally located, and easy walking distance to both Hallgrimskirkja cathedral and the historic city center. I walked around a lot in the evenings and loved the vibe of the neighborhood.
Oddly, there are no signs identifying the hotel from the street or sidewalk level. Just walk where your phone map tells you, and go inside. The 101 doormat inside the lobby was the only hint I was in the right place. Hotel owners: could you etch a 101 in the glass on your front door or put up a small sign for pedestrians?
My room was very modern and clean, with a comfortable bed and all the amenities one expects. There are two things to be aware of though. 1) Only stay there with a spouse or partner (or solo), not friends or children, because there is nothing separating the glass shower from the bedroom (no wall, no doors). 2) The street side of the hotel can be quite loud on Friday and Saturday night, as this is a big night-life district and the street is busy with people loudly having a good time. But my room faced the inner courtyard and was very quiet.

Pros: Great location and great lobby.
Cons: The walls are paper thin and you can hear everything. Surrounded by several bars that are open till 2am. Sounded like the party was in our room. After arriving in Iceland and staying here the first night we were exhausted, and because of the noise level we could not sleep till after 2:30am.
If you sleep sound or don’t mind a 90’s dance off on your room you might be okay.

Nice hotel. We stayed in the double king room. It was spacious although the layout was a little weird. The shower was just sort of a doorless alcove that was pretty near the entrance to the room. One wall of the shower was also made up of mirrors. Aside from strange layout, the room was fine. We also had difficulty opening the door to our room because the doorknob was very hard to turn, but I don't know if it was just our room that was like that.

From start to finish, this was an excellent choice! Staff could not have been more helpful in making the reservation, recommendations for dining, etc. The hotel is modern and super comfortable. Aveda items a nice touch as well as the BO sound system! I had a great view of the park and found it to be very quiet. There are a few bars nearby but even on the weekend it wasn't a problem. If you are a light sleeper they provide earplugs.
The spa was under maintenance but concierge recommended a local pool and spa which was unique local experience.
Kudos to the staff, the property is terrific but the service makes the experience!
