Detailed Reviews
Athena guesthouse was an unexpected jewel in our trip to Iceland - when we first decided to book rooms there, we were a little bit nervous about what it was going to be like staying at a private guesthouse, instead of a larger hotel, as we usually do during travel, but our anxiety was laid to rest as soon as we arrived: Egill, our host was really friendly, yet professional, explained to us how to get around in Reykjavik in great detail and was ready to answer any questions we had. The service at Athena gusthouse is very customer-oriented, and when booking, Egill also informed us on the various ways to reach the guesthouse from airport, as well as offered us a lift from the bus station, if we needed it. The guesthouse has all conveniences - there is free wi-fi, and in case you need it, the owners can even lend you a mobile phone with Icelandic number for your stay free of charge! The location of Athena guesthouse is also very convenient - it's not right in the city centre, which makes it pleasantly quiet, but near enough so that you could get to the downtown area in less than 10 minutes. If you are interested in taking bus tours around Iceland from Reykjavik, there is also a pick-up point for those nearby. As usually with guesthouses, the breakfast is self-service, however, everything that you might want is offered: there is cereal, always fresh milk in the fridge, as well as eggs that you can boil or fry, jam and cheese for toast, and always fresh fruit on the table, and, of course, coffee and tea, as well as a shelf in the fridge, so if you wish to do so, you can even cook your other meals instead of always eating out! All in all, I would recommend Athena as a great place to stay in Reykjavik, when visiting Iceland and we will probably return there the next time we go to Iceland.

It is a great location located in a residential area and is very quiet. The wharf area is only a 10-15 minute walk, plenty of restaurants. Breakfast is provided in the full kitchen and you may also prepare lunch and dinner at the Guesthouse.
I would stay there again.

I stayed in Athena guesthouse in August 2012.
It is about a 10minute walk to the main town and is situated in a quiet neighbourhood. So it is a great location.
The guesthouse is spotless! That is one of the main things I am fussy about when it comes to accommodation but this place was really nice. Even though the bathrooms were shared this was not a problem either as they were always kept so clean!
Above all the service is excellent! Egill, the host was so friendly and would go out of his way to help us. It was the personal service that made the stay worth it.
Athena guesthouse felt like our home in Reykjavik and we will definately stay there again when we come back!!
Thank you for a great stay!

You'll feel very welcome at Athena Guesthouse! I've had a great stay there, two summers in a row, and I stay there because of the friendliness of the owners, the cleanliness, and the great location. The owners are very kind and go out of their way to make sure you enjoy your stay. You get a lot of value for your money.
The rooms were bright, newly renovated, and very clean! Breakfast was plentiful and included fresh fruit! There were always snacks and coffee/tea available. You get your own shelf in the fridge and access to the fully-equipped kitchen too (which was also always very clean). The location is in a peaceful neighbourhood just minutes from the downtown/harbour area. It is close to the BSI bus terminal, the National Museum, the University, and the Tjornin too! I plan to stay there again, the next time I visit Reykjavik.

Super clean. The guesthouse is near downtown 20 minute walking time. The rooms are small but you have access to a full kitchen shared with other guests. The owner of the guesthouse was very helpful and went out of her way to help us when we needed assistance. I recommend it.

We stayed for 8 days. Operator was so helpful and cleaned the shared areas daily. New towels and sheets exchanged every few days. Bathrooms (2) were tight but functional...same as kitchen.
Breakfast was not just some items laid out, but full access to meats, cheese, bananas, apples, different breads, tomatoes, cereals, coffee/tea...and all appliances if you want. You could buy more items and really cook for yourself here.
Quieter area of town, about 20 mins leisurely walk to downtown. I really liked the area of town - close to a movie theatre, community pool, awesome ice cream parlour, corner shop for groceries, and a delicious bakery.
Only stick point for me was that there was no place to do laundry. That said, we would totally stay again.
Thanks, Athena Guesthouse!

Stayed at the Athena for two nights before joining a tour round Iceland, the location is good being just a 15 minute stroll into Reykjavik old town where old harbour, restaurants and bars reside. The rooms are clean and big enough for a stop over. The two shared toilet/shower are a bit tight but adequate, the self service breakfast from the fridge offers a reasonable choice and met our needs of bread, coffee/tea, fruit, meat and Skyr (Icelandic yogurt), note the kitchen is small so not all guests can use it at the same time. Egil the young man who looks after you is pleasant and helpful. For the price and what we needed it was good value in a reasonable location and I would stay there again in future.

Athena Guesthouse is in a quiet location about a 10 minute walk to downtown Reykajvik. The guesthouse is clean and the owner is very friendly and helpful. The room and bathrooms are small, but clean and quiet. I would recommend this for anyone searching for a small, quiet, clean B&B. Breakfast is "do it yourself" but plenty of food. Wi-fi works great and I loved being near the thermal pools which were relaxing and fun to swim and visit.

This was an amazing place. It had fast internet so I could FaceTime perfectly. It was extremely clean and a great location for many different visits to the city or connections to excursions. The breakfast was diverse so I could choose what I wanted. Truly family owned and run and it shows they care!!

We were very happy with our stay here. The owner was very pleasant and helpful. The place is kept very clean. We had a pretty spacious room with large wardrobe and sofa and the kitchen is well equipped with a self serve breakfast included.the old harbour/ town center are 10-15 mins walk away. You can be picked up for tours at a hotel 4 mins walk away and the city pool (£3 entry) with outside thermal baths is 4 mins away. There's also a food shop nearby. All the other guests during our stay were pleasant clean and quiet. I would definitely come here again for a budget stay in Reykjavik. Only minor quibble is that the curtains didn't keep the bright sunlight out at night in July.
