Good points:
All of the employees are lovely, helpful and friendly. It's easy to find. Centrally located in Funchal with truly easy walking access to most of what you want to see there. Great view from front windows directly at the port and cruise ships. Very clean & cleaned daily. Free wifi (when it's working-90% of the time it is). They wash/dry/fold/deliver your laundry for 5 euros. Free breakfast (only bread/butter, OJ and coffee). No bed bugs (I checked for 20 minutes when I arrived)! Plenty of water/plenty of hot water, decent water pressure, clean bathroom. I'm sure I'll think of more and can update later...
Bad points:
1 - There are 20 steep stairs to reception, 20 to the 3rd floor and another 20 to the top floor. Not easy going to the top floor with a 50 lb suitcase, much less to climb after walking up up up up for hours a day in Madeira.
2 - The single most uncomfortable mattress I've ever slept on in my life, and lumpy unsupportive rewashed pillows that were equally bad for the neck/back. I'm a physical medicine doctor, so believe me, if you have any back problems or are over 25 years old, they're likely harmful (not neutral) for your back (I couldn't turn my neck the last week I was there). I understand the pillows being washed, and appreciate how clean they were, but take your own if you go there and if you're uncomfortable in the bed, ask for another room.
3 - Ask for a room at the back of the building, NOT on the square. It is the noisiest place I've ever had to sleep for many nights with almost 24/7 loud traffic, shouting and background noise. The trashmen picked up glass recycling at 12:20 am, crashingly audible at every restaurant for many blocks around for at least 20 minutes.... imagine that sound waking you. My only full night sleep was my third Sunday, when it was raining.
4 - This might just be a personal pet peeve, but there are few things I hate as much as a plastic or fabric corner shower curtains billowing in and clinging to my butt, arms, back, belly...while I'm showering. Corner showers are never big enough, and I spent literally half my time in the shower fussing and fighting with the curtain just to give myself enough room, and not be shoving it off me constantly. This, to be fair, happens in many small hotels.
I gave them a 4/5 because I would and will absolutely stay at Zarco again, the people and location are fantastic and absolutely worth it (while making a few modifications).
Please notice: this is not a 5 star hotel, so, we can't be very demanding...
But, we liked staying here. Next we'll tell you the good and bad things, but, I can say right now that, if we go back to Madeira, we will stay here again.
I must start with the location: it's excelent. Really! Near everything and really really in the center.
The people there were nice. We dind't talk that much, but when we did, they were. :)
They changed the towels every day, and they were clean.
Lot's and lot's of hot water (really hot lol).
The breakfast... Well, we're portuguese and for us, who don't eat much in this meal, was more than suficient.
They have laundry service. We used it.
24 hour reception.
We stayd in a room with see view / The room had cable tv, not that we used it.
The price for the 7 nights in the center of the town.
Negative aspects (remind again: this is a residencial, not a 5 star hotel):
The room was not very clean, particulary the walls. But, nothing extreme. Would stay here again.
In the street, there's a metal bar. So, lots of noise in the street until late night. Warning: they'r nice young people just having fun! lol They don't mess with anyone! Just make noise! :p
It's difficult to park near the Residencial, but, there's a pay park near. We used it every day.
And I think we're done. We recomend it. We would come back. If you have any questions, be glad to message us! :)
The room was spacious, kitchen corner functional, balcony small but lovely with a great view to a small street with little restaurants, clean bathroom with hot water. We originally booked for 3 nights but we were too comfortable and lazy, so we ended up staying 8! This place is indeed in the middle of Funchal, walking distance from anywhere and the street is not very busy so it is just a good solution in the middle of a beautiful Funchal.
.The price (30 Euro/night for the studio) was just 5 Euro more than for a standard room in Residencial. We really recommend their studio, ask for the one with a balcony!
The higher rooms and rooms in front praça colombo and backrooms are quiter.
the breakfast is very basic,2 breads, jam and a triangle cheese
I recommend this place whether you’re intending to discover Funchal and walk around. The Zarco is located in the downtown and it’s close to everything: the cathedral, stores, museums, restaurants. From it you can take touristic buses, normal buses… you know.
Nice rooms....Not luxurious but very comfortable and clean!
Simple breakfast but good for the cheap price!
The best location possible....1min from Avenida do Mar (the main one)!
I recommend it!
They were like sleeping on rocks !! The springs stuck out so much i had red marks on my back in the morning and the pillow was so bad that my ears were sore when i awoke. That's to say when i awoke from the only half an hour of sleep that this bed allowed me. It was awful, didnt sleep at all not only due to the bed but the noise outside.
It is situated on a small street near the centre of town but was very noisy from 6am onwards. Also the shower only allowed enough hot water for 10 mins so only one person could take a decent shower or two cold take a very quick one. Not enough water to wash the hair aswell.
We had decided to move out after four days as we had already paid in advance for these days and at the end i was covered in bites presumably from the grotty blankets they supplied.
The staff were not helpful when we explained the problem of the beds and shower. When they did change the beds on our last day all they did was put a plastic sheet over the matress which didnt help at all.
"My window faced the inner courtyard that was also covered. Request an outdoor window if it is important."Read full review
"Avoid rooms opening on to the noisy courtyard, or at the front of the hotel above the neighbouring bar. Ask to see the room first and, if sleep quality matters to you, ensure it is not in these two areas."Read full review
