What an absolutely fabulous honeymoon. The hosts of the accommodation are so friendly and cant do enough for you. We had the apartment which had amazing views over the sea and right next to the pool. We had fresh bread and jams delivered to our balcony every day. You need a car or be prepared for taxi prices to get anywhere but when you stay somewhere so beautiful you dont mind. Would definitely return and recommend.

Casa do Papagaio Verde is a guesthouse in the hills just a few minutes drive from Funchal and above and away from all the hotels and apartment houses that have been built these last years.
The house is a modern one with enormous windows (doors) instead of walls that overlook the sea from all the rooms. Some guestrooms are in the main building, opening on a garden full of tropical flowers and nice wicker chairs and tables.Others are on the swimming pool level just a flight of stairs below. The Pool has comportable sun beds.. There is even a complete appartment (house) with two bedrooms in the garden.
.The appartment and 3 studios with kitchen facilities are self catering. There are normal doubles too.
The owner is Filomena a lady in the real sense of the word. My husband and I stayed there over Christmas 2006 On arrival we were welcomed with a glass of........ Madeira wine of course in a living room decorated with taste and sense of a "warm" traditional Christmas with a tree touching the ceiling.
. In the morning of the 25th we all got a gift, wrapped
up beautifully, a kind of honeycake, deliscious, speciality of the island. You can have breafast in the mornig if you wish and other meals too if you ask in advance. Filomena has some small pets, but they behave very well and do not go into the rooms.
Staying at Casa do papagaio you need a car, but you will need it anyway if you want to visit the Island which Is a real paradise.
. You have the sea, a nice clean interesting town (Funchal) the mountains and beautifull walks along the famous Levadas, the irrigation channels of the Island and last but not least restaurants with fantastic fresh fish. If you do not like fish , the grilled meat is a real treat. Do not stay at home during a cold winter or a
hot summer go to Casa do Papagaio Verde and Madeira and enjoy the best of life.

We wanted peace and quiet during our winter break in February 2007, and we had it, at Casa Papagaio. We had expected from the photos on the website that the place was situated right by the ocean, but the view of hotels, to the left, and grown fields, to the right, was entertaining to look at, so we were not disappointed. And the view of the ocean is certainly mindblowing.
What we had not expected could be bought for money (!) anymore was the totally non-commercial atmosphere we lived in for five days.
We did not want to rent a car because we did not have the guts to test the twists and turns of the island. But there is a levada - walking path - 5 minutes from the hotel, which leads you to Funchal in about an hour. Or if you prefer the local bus, you can catch it within a 10-minute walk from the hotel.
The landlady Filomena, a kind and intelligent woman, provides ecologically homegrown lettuce and vegetables, and lovely Isa from Cabo Verde serves the delicious food. And try their passion fruit mousse! (Filomena was kind to mail us the recipe, but there is no way it will turn out like hers).
We’ll be back, Filomena. Ole and Eva

Just like the previous reviewer, I was hesitant about writing a review about Casa Do Papagaio because the people there were very nice and it seemed to exceed most people's expectations.
However, I feel it's important that we be honest about our stay here.
The main problem that we had was that the house was in such a remote location. There was no bar or restaurant at the house and none within walking distance. As we were staying bed and breakfast we had no fridge and no coffee or tea making facilities so we had to take the hire car all the way into Funchal ( and pay for parking too- which isn't in abundance) to get any food. When we got back at night there were no lights. The roads were windy and narrow and the parking was poor. There were also no lights on at the premises so we struggled to see to get back down the steps to get to the room.

We couldn't sit out at night as we had no balcony (and no light) and our room was so close to everyone elses that we were worried about making any noise. Similarly, at night it was hot in the room, but there was no ventiliation without opening the door. Then we felt we had to whisper all the time. We had a problem with insects too and I suffered with many mosquito bites. Plus of course, there's the 4 dogs and 5 cats that live on the premises who I was concerned could wander into the room at any time.

The continental breakfast was OK, but wasn't substantial enough for me and was somewhat inconsistent. Some days we were offered eggs, some days not. On our 4th day we had no hot water. We spoke to the lady ( Filomena) and she was very apologetic, but we decided to leave to go to another hotel which we arranged with our Thomson rep. The owners were kind enough not to charge a cancellation fee and for this we have to be grateful. The people who own the house and very nice and the staff are lovely, but this accomodation just didn't meet our expectations.
I think this place is probably suited to older couples who want to ' get away from it all'. I would certainly recommend self catering rather than bed and breakfast to anyone thinking of coming here.

My husband and I stayed here in early July 2011. I had read the reviews on Trip Advisor and was quite excited to be going here, especially as I am not a fan of mass tourism and large hotels.

I have to say, I am finding it hard to believe that I was in the same place as the others who have so positively reviewed this B&B. Yes it is a bit remote - that is fine and what we were looking for. We knew that and that is why we chose it and, in fact, the grounds are quite lovely. What I had a major problem with was the intense smell and presence of mildew in our room. The room had mold stains all around the walls near the ceiling, in the closet and mostly in the bathroom where the bathroom walls had so much mold on them, I found it surprising no one has noticed this? I am very aware of the fact we are on a subtropical island which is very humid. I am from the South of the US and know about humidity, but it is unacceptable that no one has done anything about this. In fact, the general state of the bathroom was surprising (very old bathroom fixtures, an old white plastic shower curtain (with mold), rust stains in the tub, a broken clothes rack with the broken pieces on the floor still (how no one noticed this and removed it is beyond me). And of course, as previously mentioned, the quantity of mold on the walls is not acceptable.

Unable to sleep in the room because of the smell, we had to sleep with the sliding glass doors wide open and during the night, found the resident cats in the room and on our bed. I have my own cats and do not necessarily mind this, however when I went in the bathroom to find the cat on the toilet seat, drinking the water out of the toilet bowl, this is where I draw the line.

The following morning, I asked the assistant manager if we could move to another room, but unfortunately there wouldn't be one available until the following day - which meant another night in the moldy room we were currently in. Not knowing if the room in the main house would be any better, my husband and I decided during the course of the day to change hotels. As there was no one in the house to inform, we left during the evening and came back the next day to settle our bill and inform them why were leaving.

We lost what amounted to slightly over 3 nights worth of payment (although technically having been checked in only 2 nights, but this was due to an issue with the outside booking agent), but it was worth leaving to save our vacation. When my husband mentioned the mold to the owner, she said we needed to understand this was not a hotel but a B&B. I believe mold is not acceptable no matter what type of establishment one is in. It is a shame because the property is quite nice, however I believe not maintained properly. When I mentioned the mold to the Assistant Manager, she told me she didn't know as she had never seen the rooms? I find this quite strange as someone should be controlling the upkeep and as this is quite a small property, there is not really an excuse for more rigorous control.

And yes, there are dogs barking. A lot, in fact. I do not believe they are the dogs of this property at all however (who are, by the way, extremely friendly as are all the animals) but neighboring properties, but this seems to be a problem in this area of Madeira in general. This is easily overlooked though as the island is astonishingly beautiful and very underrated. Definitely worth visiting and revisiting.

Response from CasaPapagaio, Owner at Casa do Papagaio
Responded Sep 23, 2011
Despite the fact that we were surprised and very sad with this review , we would like to say the Apartment mentioned below was completely renovated the end of July 2011. All the decor and furniture of the Apartment was changed, as per the photos on our website. It was an unusual very cloudy July in Madeira Island with a lot of humidity, and this can cause some mould problems. The main goal of all our staff members is to try and keep all our guests content, and to improve and meet higher standards. We have guests that come every year to this Apartment and they love it. As per the other reviews below, most of our guests appreciate our hospitality and facilities and plan on visiting us again. The Casa is situated in a rural setting, even though it is close to the Funchal City Centre. We do, however, realise that some guests are more sensitive to odours than others especially if they are not used to Island humidity.

The hosts, the views, the place and the meals are unquestionably brilliant. The location , you know before you go is out a bit , but that is a good thing so no complaints until....we are given a room, quite remote, fine..but next to the dog pen !. The dogs did not stop barking from 6am and then by the pool all day the dogs are in a pen in the field just across the way from the lovely pool area. A tremendous place, and lovely dogs but I did wish just for a few hours they would be quiet.
The hosts did all they could to make this a truly good visit to Madeira, even taking us shopping, and dropping us 'downtown'. We had a dog of our own once but the 'animals warning did nothing to prepare us for this. The rooms I understand around the rest of the house are very quiet.
I feel apologetic writing this review but this site has never let me down. I am sure people will have an enjoyable time both in this hotel and the hosts could not have done anything more but we suggest you ask about the dogs especially if you intend spending days by the pool or are in the room away from the house.

The first thing you're greeted with is a glass of Madeira wine, and after that, just take it easy.

There's a beautiful swimming pool to take a dip in after going on one of the many hikes on the island, or maybe after lying in the sun all day.

You can order dinner in advance from their menu of typical Madeiran dishes for a very reasonable price (about 12 Euros per plate), which is highly recommended, especially the laurel branch beef skewers.

They have a garden in the back where they grow a great deal of fresh produce and fruit for their breakfasts. Apparently, arugula grows wild there and they picked huge bunches of it for us.

The owners are amazingly kind and generous.

Contact them ahead of time about transportation. They have a deal with a particular taxi driver who will take you to and from the airport for 25 euros, but it has to be arranged ahead of time. They also have a contact for car rentals at a very reasonable price that we took advantage of (I think it came out to about 25 euros a day?)

Highly recommended.

This is a fabulous place to stay! Our only mistake was to book it through Simply Travel rather than direct, as they messed up the booking (we think they just forgot to book it) and we ended up with a standard room rather than the self-catering one we'd expected. Not a massive deal, but big enough when you're vegetarian in the land of meat and fish...!

We're living proof that a car's not essential to stay here, though I guess it would have been a big help. However, it's an hour's pleasant walk along the lavada into Funchal and between 5 and 10 Euros by taxi back (it's remote enough that most taxi drivers didn't have a clue where to go!).

The room we stayed in was spacious and comfortable, the buffet breakfast was lovely and the cats and dogs were a good excuse to put down your book! I would highly recommend staying here - just book it direct!

From the moment that we arrived to our departure a week later, we felt very relaxed and well looked after in this very special guest house. Our apartment was very clean and comfortable, with everything we needed and more, including a panoramic view out to sea. The owner and her staff made us feel very welcome, and provided us with wonderful breakfasts and dinners on the days that we didn't want to cater for ourselves or eat out. We look forward to a return visit. PS a good book to read whilst in Madeira is Robert Goddard's novel 'Past caring' which is partly set in the island.
