We Stayed at the pestana ocean gardens aparthotel, it is right next door to pestana ocean bay aparthotel.
As we seemed to be out of season or the ocean gardens wasn't busy as no bars etc were open in the hotel, swimming pool and jacuzzi were though.
We used the facilities at the ocean bay which is right next door only a few minutes away. we had b&b and this is where we had our breakfast, buffet style which had eggs, bacon etc.
some guests had all inclusive and this is where all the food is served. only one restaurant here so if you want to eat out then there is only a couple of places local to walk to.
A cab or car ride into town is only about 10 minutes drive away
although the restaurants do seem to do the same and octopus is the only "fish" which isn't imported or so i was told. we ate out every night and never had a bad or expensive meal.
hotel itself was lovely, maid service every day and we felt really safe. pool could have been a bit warmer as it was heated but still only 23, and jacuzzi was nice too at 32. steam room and sauna nice aswell.
Hotel staff very helpfull and english spoken very well as it was on most of the island.
Most of the guests were 60+.
There isn't a sandy beach on madeira just rocky ones.
overall an a1 holiday and would use pestana again.
Madeira is well worth a visit.

Regular visitor to Madeira and have used Pestana before. Our friends were visiting both for first time and were not disappointed. Apartments, gardens, food and service first class and we all will be back.

Great appartments with gardens, well maintained. Pool area, with greased area, friendly staff. Also Miramara Restaurant, which we used many times in our two week stay, excellent service, delicious food. I love the different areas you could sit in , especially outside in the cool of the evening. Save a bit of room for desert, they were devine.

Before you book this hotel be warned of the following facts:
There is no beach, just a moon-scape of boulders and, when we were there, a JCB boulder bashing.
The "village setting" includes a disused oil refinery. Nice!
There is no restaurant which must be a first for a 4 star hotel.
The room was a pokey airless hole. My heavily pregnant wife had to sleep on a camp bed.
To say there was nothing to do would be an understatement. By day 3 we were spending our time watching TV cartoons in Portugese.
When we complained we were told basically 'tough luck'. We endured this dump for 7 days and could not wait to get home.
If you still go ahead and book this hotel be aware we were only offered £120 pound compensation for our troubles (5% of our costs!) My advise: Don't go near it.

Room was ok but the facilities advertised were non existant, there is no poolbar,no snack bar,no entertainment ,no shops close bye, infact nothing to do at night except watch cable tv with lots of subtitles in Portuguese. This apartment was advertised on Owners direct website which boasted and proved pictures of all the wonderful facilities. After visiting I find Some of the pictures are of the hotel next door The Pestana Bay Hotel which is stil advertising as I type this report.I specificaly looked for accomodation that would allow smoking,The website and other websites stil advertising this apartment does not inform potential renters that it is no smoking.
On my return to UK I received an email from rental company informing me that my £100 deposit would no be returned and that I owed them an extra £40 for funmegating the apartment due to smoking. There was no information displayed that the apartment ,was non smokig.
Dont waste your money and dont think you can use the facilities next door at the Pestana Bay Hotel as they seem to despise guests staying at Pestana Gardens

We booked this direct with Pestana and stayed for 8 nights. The short version is, I wouldn't go back.
The hotel itself is quite nice. The gardens and pool pleasant, view across the bay wonderful. I found the staff mostly professional, but many were unhelpful in an ignorant way. We only ever had breakfast, which was a blessing, meal times were a shambles with a fight over clear tables. I constantly had to request top ups of fruit and pastries at the buffet. Coffee was good if you ordered it from behind the bar, the other stuff was mud.
Guests are mostly old people on package tours, British or European. So it's kinda sedentary. Rooms are ok, but walls a bit thin. Pray you don't get a room next to the lift!
Beyond the hotel grounds the beach is a complete no go zone unless you want a broken ankle. The boulders would bring a health and safety inspector out in a cold sweat. As would the path (promenade) made of pallets wired together. That leads to a wet and muddy tunnel going through the rock, which is quite exciting but plays havoc with posh shoes! Take care with the tunnel - they lock it at night. Much to my fury I established this one late evening, and meant walking about three hazardous miles to the main entrance of the hotel. The staff were entirely indifferent when I asked why they hadn't bothered telling us this would happen. Grrrr!! lol, I'm still angry now :o)
The walk to Funchal is quite a challenge - there are lots of steep bits, but plenty of cafes and restaurants. It's a curious mixture of lovely cliffs, pleasant sunshine and cranes shifting things about.

We stayed at the gardens 13th -20th August ' 07.

The location of pestanan gardens is wonderful; right on the beach.

The cleanliness of the rooms and public areas is second to none.

All staff from the maid to the manager were helpful.

We were shocked by the size of our one bed apart. it was so big, and actually could sleep seven.

The pool bar to which a previous review refers, was never open during our stay, although it was peak summer. The wooden pallets along the beach are there to provide a pathway, which worked well. The water in the tunnel, was noting more then natural leakage through the rocks.

Useful advice before you go:
Take tea, coffee, sugar and coffee mate, there are none provided in the room, and are very expensive in the supermarket.

Take mosquito plugs, and repellent if you are prone to bites, I got eaten alive, particularly at night, made worse I think because the apartments have no air-conditioning; it's hot!

Eat at the 'Regency Yacht Bar' right on the beach, food, staff and location were amazing, and certainly without doubt the highlight of our holiday.

Fifth trip to Madeira. Fourth Pestana Hotel I have stayed in and definitely the best. Most rooms I believe have a view of the ocean and ours certainly had a great view. The staff were particularly helpful - especially Filippe on Reception. He could not have done more for us from recommending restaurants to Best buses/routes for where we wanted to go. I fell on the last day of the holiday and he was a great help ensuring everything ran smoothly (wheelchair etc). The breakfast was fantastic and the hotel could not have been in a better location. It will be my first choice when I wish to visit Madeira again

Booked through holiday lettings room 406 reasonably priced
the atlantic gardens must have been at some time part of the pestana chain long ago
and now private owned to let out.
the place is in need of some T.L.C the room 406 had a great sea view ,and was very spacious , as a base it was great. The patio doors need some serious attention any body with no strength will struggle.
could have had some form of heating as we were frozen in there ,the weather was a bit on the cool side so this reflected indoors.
Atlantic gardens is a bit out of the main strip and access is up and up and up to the main road for taxis and buses.
the best way is from the grounds along the so called promenade flat on the unsteady broadwalk some steps up to restaurants and a huge supermarket this is the nearest one.Carry on and you have a lovely walk to the harbour .
from the grounds going the other way along a better promenade is a few seaside restaurants which are very reasonable and good.
Carry on and takes you to the next village lovely for a break ,you'll need one!
the public transport is brilliant for getting around .
but do the red and yellow tours with extras first they include a few of the attractions and hop on hop off facility.
the highlights from this trip were the cable car and the toboggan ride down, haggle with the taxi drivers for a lift back down town ,as the toboggan only go's half way.
on the yellow tour go to the cliff ,great views downwards from the platform look out for the glass section whow.
good food ,pleasant enough people, weather well say no more on that, accommodation ok for the cost .been to Maderia ,return I don't think so .
never did the levada walks due to bad weather,
go to Nuns Valley tour well worth it have chestnut soup very filling and warming ,honey cake, and of course the Maderia wine.

There's no way this is a 4* holiday venue. We were "upgraded" to it after making our booking in Pestana Ocean Bay, which was incredibly disappointing. The apartment was large and had a balcony overlooking the sea, but that's probably the most positive thing I can say about it. The lino was peeling off the floor in the bathroom, the bathroom walls had holes in, the lampshades had all manner of stains on, the pillows were lumpy and the bedding was unpleasantly smelly. It was fairly quiet during the day which made for some easy relaxing, but that's most likely because it was the last week of the season or everyone else just picked better hotels! Very disappointing, won't be returning.
