we have stayed in this hotel for consecutive years because we enjoy it so much. It is small, friendly and family run. Enter through the big green gates and you are in a different world from all the huge hotels in the area. There is a garden and a small swimming pool. Rooms are spotlessly clean with lovely linen and tea and coffee making facilities. We had to quarantine when we arrived until our test results came through and the staff ensured that we were supplied with food and wine until our results came through later in the evening. The location is very good, a pleasant stroll takes you to funchal centre one way, the other direction goes to the Forum shopping centre. There are plenty of restaurants and bars in the area and a very good public bus service. We stayed in the family room this time, which was on the top floor with a big balcony with views of the sea. Other balconies overlook the garden or the swimming pool. We had breakfast outside every morning which was served by a member of staff, this was a change from previous visits when there was a breakfast buffet. The change was made to keep guests socially distanced.
There is an honesty bar in the lounge where you get wine, beer and soft drinks., fill in a slip and pay when you checkout. We are already planning another visit as we enjoy staying here so much.

We stayed at the Vila Vicencia over New Year and absolutely loved it. With all the tall concrete hotels round about, it was a pleasant surprise to find this little Hideaway behind the large black gates. From the moment we walked in, the staff were so friendly & helpful. Our suite on the second floor was lovely, consisting of a lounge, large bedroom with plenty of hanging & drawer space, a safe in the wardrobe (charged at €5 a week) and a bathroom with shower over the bath, shower gel & hairdryer. There was a large balcony with chairs & a table, the only downside was that we didn't get the sun on the balcony but we only used it in the mornings. Everywhere was spotlessly clean with rooms cleaned & beds made every day. Breakfast included hot & cold options & the cakes every morning were delicious. The grounds were so colourful with so many beautiful plants, a medium sized swimming pool ( I had a swim on New Years Day!!!) and sun beds with comfortable cushions. There is free wifi & a selection of books in the lounge. Locationwise it was perfect. There are lots of bars, restaurants & shops on the doorstep and the Lido is closeby down a hill. It takes approximately a 25mins easy walk into Funchal but there are plenty of buses & taxis if you prefer them. All in all, we will definitely return to this lovely, homely little hotel, it was just perfect.

We chose this hotel from the TUI “ small and friendly” hotels. We have always enjoyed these types of hotel in different countries. We do not like “ high rise concrete monstrosities” and always avoid them.
This hotel could not be faulted
We chose to pay more for a sitting area, fridge and kettle and balcony/ terrace which was worth doing for our 10 day stay.
I was a bit grumpy when we arrived late at night and I saw the tiniest balcony ( all the curtains were drawn)
The next morning I found that we had the small balcony overlooking the pool for the afternoon/ evening sun and a much larger balcony/ sitting area for the morning sun. Our room- 45 was very quiet at night although we were in an urban area and was extremely clean and comfortable
All the staff were lovely and we were very happy with the breakfast choices - especially the different home baked cake put out every morning, and the Portuguese tarts which were delicious.
I did swim in the outdoor unheated pool which was small but surrounded by lovely plants and flowers
There was a heated one but I did not use it. We sat in the sitting room by the open fire in the evenings.
There was also a bookcase full of books- mostly in English which was a bonus for me!
We ate a lot at the restaurant next door which was also very good if we got back after a day of walking ( the O Dragoeiro)
I have read other reviews of this hotel and they are overwhelmingly positive and I agree with them
A lovely quiet clean friendly quiet hotel.

We booked this place because of the reviews on here and were expecting a charming bed and breakfast. What we found was a basic hotel. Here are the positives:

1) Staff at the bar are very nice especially the older gentleman.
2) The drinks prices are good. For example, you will pay 80 p for an espresso and 3) the water pressure in the shower is pretty good.

Now to the the negatives:

1) There is no double bed, it's two single beds joined together with a gap in the middle. Pillows are terrible, you can't get a good night sleep. I have a neck ache

2) Cleaniless. Our room was just wiped clean a few times and the bed made but the dust on TV, toothpaste marks by the sink were left. They don't give you any new shower gels, at least we didn't get any even when we left an empty bottle by the sink to remind the cleaner, she left the empty bottle behind. The bath tub has stains and the whole room is very very basic.

3) there is no way to heat the room and we had few chilly nights

4) there is no duvet but just a sheet, a thin blanket, then another sheet and they leave some sheets if you want more....at night it becomes a mess of many different sheets.

5) there is no fridge in the room

6) there is no privacy on the balcony. They could put some bamboo screens so if you want to sit there all you see are people literally next door to you

7) the breakfast is basic and nothing exciting. They don't make anything like an omelette on request

It is a good place for budget Travelers but don't expect a relaxing experience. At least for us, the less time spent in this place the better. I wasn't expecting five star hotel but this reminded me of when I was a student and stayed in a few hostels. Just not my idea of a relaxing holiday. There is just no privacy in this place. Also the walls are thin and you can hear people showering, moving about in their uncomfortable beds. Everywhere you look there is a building overlooking this place.

We loved our holiday in this charming hotel. It feels like a little community, once you're inside the gates. Set in pretty gardens, there are plenty of little areas to sit and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. Inside and outside pools are well maintained, sun loungers and little tables where you can relax and let the day go by. The area around the villa is lovely, beautiful gardens just a short walk away . The restaurants in the area all serve lovely food, and there's lots of choice ( indian, Italian, tapas, traditional Portuguese, everything great quality). We used the local transport, twenty euros each for the open topped tourist bus which you could use for two days, hopping on and off and it took you all around the local area. Very friendly staff, great breakfast sitting in the autumn sunshine ( either inside the conservatory or on one of the outside tables). Cosy lounges, comfortable bar area where you can get wines, beers, etc and we enjoyed coffee and delicious cake each afternoon. Room was spacious and comfortable, with lovely old wood furniture. Large bathroom and sitting area with setee and small fridge. Staff came in every day and serviced the room. Perfect break in a little madeiran sunshine to break up the darker days.

This is truly a lovely hotel. You step through the gates into an oasis of calm. The rooms are lovely and clean, with tea and coffee making facilities, a fridge, safe and lovely bathroom. Our room was on the ground floor and we had a lovely veranda outside, right next to the pool. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The lovely ladies at breakfast especially so. The breakfast was very relaxed, with a serve yourself buffet, and plenty of choice. The hotel is close to lots of restaurants and only a 30 minute walk to the harbour, although the bus stops and taxi ranks are only a few hundred yards away (a taxi to the centre of town cost us €9). Funchal itself, is a beautiful town, with lots to see and do. We were there at Christmas and the decorations were stunning. A lovely holiday, we will definitely visit again.

A lovely boutique, colonial style hotel tucked away in beautiful well kept gardens with a small swimming pool and plenty of shaded, terraced outside space for relaxing. The rooms were clean with the necessary furniture and a ceiling fan. There were shutters on the windows to keep out the street lighting. The bathroom was clean and modern.
There were ample restaurants to choose from nearby and the Dragona next door was a favourite for us. This was a good location and base for our holiday.
The only downside to our stay was the building works, which was part of the hotel’s own expansion. We were unaware of this prior to our stay. Just 10 metres away from our room, the builders started every week day morning at 8am and finished at 6pm. The noise from power tools was relentless and because of where they were working, privacy was a big issue for us as the workmen could see into our room (number 17). Luckily, we were spending most of the day out exploring the island so we enjoyed the garden and time relaxing at the hotel during the weekend.
I would 100% recommend Vila Vicencia as a typical characterful hotel with wonderfully attentive and friendly staff had it not been for this issue.

Our second stay in this lovely small hotel and we will return! It is furnished in 'traditional' style with wooden and tiled floors and dark wood furniture. We enjoy the lush green garden which surrounds the hotel buildings, mature trees and shrubs, which means there is always somewhere shady to sit. It is very laid back, no rush for a sun bed, whatever time of day we always found somewhere to relax. The outdoor pool was too cold for me but the indoor pool is a good temperature and the jacuzzi is great! Our room was spacious with comfy beds and a balcony overlooking the garden. Breakfast is buffet style with hot and cold options and we could never resist a slice of Madeira cake to finish with! A special mention to all of the staff who made the stay really enjoyable.

This is a small (under 50 rooms), independently run hotel set in beautiful grounds. The outer gate leads into a veritable oasis of calm away from the hustle and bustle of the busy resort. The style is traditional and our room, no. 43 in the newer building was large, comfortable and had plenty of storage space. The large balcony with comfortable furniture overlooked the garden and was surrounded by bougainvillea which was in flower. The breakfast room extended into the garden and the breakfast itself was really good with fresh fruit and bread, meats and cheeses and a cooked element every day. I wasn't brave enough to swim in the outdoor pool but the indoor pool was heated and was lovely. The staff are friendly and couldn't do enough for you. We will definitely return!

We arrived at night and was welcomed from the moment we stepped in. Morning came breakfast is buffet style with most things available. Grounds are spotless the all place is kept tidy, yes there is building work going on in the grounds but doesn't really affect your stay plus the most noise really is from the works around this hidden gem of a vila. The staff are hard working and nothing is to much trouble they will go out there way to help you with anything. Very pleasant and polite they are a credit to you. Would definitely recommend. Not really suitable for people who wish to party all night its very quiet and tranquil with easy access to most places.
