There is an honesty bar in the lounge where you get wine, beer and soft drinks., fill in a slip and pay when you checkout. We are already planning another visit as we enjoy staying here so much.
This hotel could not be faulted
We chose to pay more for a sitting area, fridge and kettle and balcony/ terrace which was worth doing for our 10 day stay.
I was a bit grumpy when we arrived late at night and I saw the tiniest balcony ( all the curtains were drawn)
The next morning I found that we had the small balcony overlooking the pool for the afternoon/ evening sun and a much larger balcony/ sitting area for the morning sun. Our room- 45 was very quiet at night although we were in an urban area and was extremely clean and comfortable
All the staff were lovely and we were very happy with the breakfast choices - especially the different home baked cake put out every morning, and the Portuguese tarts which were delicious.
I did swim in the outdoor unheated pool which was small but surrounded by lovely plants and flowers
There was a heated one but I did not use it. We sat in the sitting room by the open fire in the evenings.
There was also a bookcase full of books- mostly in English which was a bonus for me!
We ate a lot at the restaurant next door which was also very good if we got back after a day of walking ( the O Dragoeiro)
I have read other reviews of this hotel and they are overwhelmingly positive and I agree with them
A lovely quiet clean friendly quiet hotel.
1) Staff at the bar are very nice especially the older gentleman.
2) The drinks prices are good. For example, you will pay 80 p for an espresso and 3) the water pressure in the shower is pretty good.
Now to the the negatives:
1) There is no double bed, it's two single beds joined together with a gap in the middle. Pillows are terrible, you can't get a good night sleep. I have a neck ache
2) Cleaniless. Our room was just wiped clean a few times and the bed made but the dust on TV, toothpaste marks by the sink were left. They don't give you any new shower gels, at least we didn't get any even when we left an empty bottle by the sink to remind the cleaner, she left the empty bottle behind. The bath tub has stains and the whole room is very very basic.
3) there is no way to heat the room and we had few chilly nights
4) there is no duvet but just a sheet, a thin blanket, then another sheet and they leave some sheets if you want more....at night it becomes a mess of many different sheets.
5) there is no fridge in the room
6) there is no privacy on the balcony. They could put some bamboo screens so if you want to sit there all you see are people literally next door to you
7) the breakfast is basic and nothing exciting. They don't make anything like an omelette on request
It is a good place for budget Travelers but don't expect a relaxing experience. At least for us, the less time spent in this place the better. I wasn't expecting five star hotel but this reminded me of when I was a student and stayed in a few hostels. Just not my idea of a relaxing holiday. There is just no privacy in this place. Also the walls are thin and you can hear people showering, moving about in their uncomfortable beds. Everywhere you look there is a building overlooking this place.
There were ample restaurants to choose from nearby and the Dragona next door was a favourite for us. This was a good location and base for our holiday.
The only downside to our stay was the building works, which was part of the hotel’s own expansion. We were unaware of this prior to our stay. Just 10 metres away from our room, the builders started every week day morning at 8am and finished at 6pm. The noise from power tools was relentless and because of where they were working, privacy was a big issue for us as the workmen could see into our room (number 17). Luckily, we were spending most of the day out exploring the island so we enjoyed the garden and time relaxing at the hotel during the weekend.
I would 100% recommend Vila Vicencia as a typical characterful hotel with wonderfully attentive and friendly staff had it not been for this issue.
