We found that these awards are well deserved.
This is a small family run hotel of about 30 rooms that works on a B&B basis.
It is situated at the top of the Old Town district of Funchal and is well located for a short walk to the cable car and bus station. If you use the back gate out of the hotel it puts you in the heart of the Old Town area and it’s abundant restaurants.
There is a hearty breakfast available in the mornings with a selection of cooked, cereals, fruits, yoghurts, breads, pastries, juices and beverages. Breakfast can be taken inside or on the sunny secluded terrace by the pool.
There is also a bar area with a comprehensive selection of beer, wine and spirits available during the afternoons and evenings.
The hotel is spotlessly clean and the gardens well kept. These provide a secluded screen around the pool area.
The family and all the staff are the nicest friendliest people you could hope to find and they make sure your stay is as comfortable and pleasant as possible.
The room we had was a good size, nicely decorated and we had a balcony that overlooked the pool. There was a bath and mixer shower attachment and soap and shampoo provided. The room also has a refrigerator.
The only thing for me that was missing was a kettle in the room.
The hotel pool is not really usable unless you like cold swimming! It was cold in May the last time we stayed so it is not just a winter issue. The bathroom is quite small (not enough room for 2 people at once) with a shower over the bath rather than a shower cubicle. Whilst a good size empty fridge was in the room for wine, fruit juice etc from the supermarket there are no tea/ coffee making facilities though these can be purchased at the hotel bar.
I had a problem with my credit card when I paid our bill but I raised this with the hotel after I realised the problem on returning home. The hotel manager agreed to put it right which is good of them as the mistake was not of their doing (or mine) but seemed to be caused by the card machine company. This is a very good indication of the hotel's attitude to customer service that they were willing to sort this out for me promptly and to my satisfaction. Many thanks to them for doing this - much appreciated.
I really recommend this hotel for a peaceful getaway and don’t doubt we will stay here again.
We did have a couple niggles, the bath towels are a bit thin, the pool towels are lovely, perhaps the time has come for replacements.
Our other niggle was that smoking was allowed around the pool and in the covered area by the dining room, as well as the balconies. I know smoking in these areas is within the legal guidelines but a small number of smokers can make it a no go area for the majority. Perhaps a dedicated smoking area above the entrance
could be created.
Will we return, off course, already booked!!!!
Also I had the privilege of meeting the family who own the hotel, they are lovely and took an interest in how our holiday was going.
We will definitely be back
It’s a small, family run hotel and the care and attention to detail all show. Our friends, visiting for the first time, loved every bit of it and, like us, will certainly return.
We have travelled for many many years and stayed in loads of accommodation, but this place has to have the most friendliest and attentive staff we have ever encountered.
From the moment we arrived to the moment we left every single member of staff has been fab.
Carla, Katrina, Monica and Celia clearly love their jobs and could not be more genuine and fabulous. (Sorry not sure the name of the cleaner and the lady in the kitchen that was equally as nice).
My partner was Ill for his actual birthday and they were so caring, asking how he was and offering remedies, cancelling pre arranged bookings and offering alternatives.
They even did a belated birthday sing song at breakfast when he felt better, along with a bottle of bubbles.
If we returned to Madeira we wouldn’t stay anywhere else!
Thanks albergaria dias you have been top class in every way!
