The service was awesome, we heard reviews raving about Fabio who brought the best customer service to them and we weren't let down, as the legend himself greeted us upon arrival. He speaks very good English and will help you out with anything, from restaurant recommendations, to ordering a decent takeaway, and even allowing you to watch your favourite football team lose against inferior opposition on the big TV in the communal lounge... The environment is also a sociable one, as the communal courtyard and lounge allowed us to chat with other guests and share stories. Great casual place; brilliant value for money.
Good and plentiful continental breakfast with cereal, yoghurt, cold meats, boiled eggs, excellent selection of rolls, croissants and cake. Although small, our room was spotless , plenty of hot water in the shower area and good views over the mountains on one side and to the harbour area from the bathroom. Small tv in the room, which was old, but certainly adequate to catch up with the news.
The road to the hotel is fairly steep, but certainly manageable if you are fit, we are not youngsters and managed the walk every day without fail and sometimes twice. It is a 10 minute walk down to the old town area and probably 20 mins back.
There is a lovely terrace/seating area to the front of the hotel which is great on a nice warm evening to enjoy a drink, there is also a lounge area with Flatscreen tv and free wifi is also available.
Would certainly have no hesitation in returning.
Because of it's location on the hill it is actually rewarding with views and tranquility, away from the old town noise. We were lucky to get top double room with balcony opening to Funchal and see view! Count it 10 - 15mins to go down to the old town and restaurants and 20-25min to come back by foot up the hill.
Staff - I was stunned of the warmth and welcome we got! It is actually the highlight of this hotel. The staff were truly excellent & helpful.
The room was clean, equiped with all you need except hairdryer. ..well TV didn't stream very well either but since we didn't come for TV it didn't bother.
One major disadvantage that we unfortunately got to know about thanks God only for the last few nights were thin and extremely not sound proof walls....so if you get overexcited neighbours or unpolite and unsensible with noise and time appreciation as we did - you may not sleep as well. Other than that the hotel is bargain!
Breakfast not a feast but certainly will keep you well stuffed till lunch and again to my surprise there were lots of fruits! (no eggs though for those who need them).
Other bonus was that the food store was just few minutes away down hill if you wanted to get water, wine or snacks for the evening.
So overall, better than expected!
The town is amazing as is the island that we saw with day tours.
The hotel facility is nice, the staff excellent. The room was small, but they have a nice sitting area with TV and refrigerator. Breakfast was basic, but included in the cost. The reception doubles as a bar. The cost to visit Portugal is very reasonable and especially now while the US dollar is strong.
I would recommend this hotel if you are on a budget and do not mind being on a hill.
"Just ask if there's anything wrong! There wasn't for us, but I'm sure they will be happy to accommodate any preferences."Read full review
