A lovely place, with lots of plush sofas and carpets and wooden floors. Quiet, in a side street. Rather small rooms, but the beds are excellent. The breakfast is basic, but a lot, and you can have it in the open (there's no buffet, though). The lady-owner is a separate gem and will go out of her ways so that you enjoyed your stay. Ask for a room with the terrace, the view on the city is excellent.

A wonderful experience staying with Residential Do Vale in Madeira. Clean room, fantastic sea view, decent buffet breakfast, convenient location, friendly staff......at a reasonable price. Although it's more like a budget hotel (in terms of facilities), when with service, it's more than what a five-star hotel would offer! The exceptionally dedicated staff, Fabio, would offer help and advice to almost every aspects during your stay from airport transfer, restaurant suggestions, tour arrangements, to best sights to see...... Originally we intended to stay for 5 nights, but due to his great hospitality, we decided to stay 2 more nights! We didn't regret to have chosen Residential Do Vale (even climbing up the hotel was something unforgettable!) and would be more than happy to recommend it to anyone!

The place was great, very comfortable, spotless, accessible, and quiet at night. It is in walking distance of Funchal; although the uphill return is a bit of a drag it's still under 30 minutes walk even if you take a break or two. Beds comfortable and bathroom spacious.

The service was awesome, we heard reviews raving about Fabio who brought the best customer service to them and we weren't let down, as the legend himself greeted us upon arrival. He speaks very good English and will help you out with anything, from restaurant recommendations, to ordering a decent takeaway, and even allowing you to watch your favourite football team lose against inferior opposition on the big TV in the communal lounge... The environment is also a sociable one, as the communal courtyard and lounge allowed us to chat with other guests and share stories. Great casual place; brilliant value for money.

Very good indeed. Spotlessly clean. Friendly, helpful staff. The continental breakfast was excellent, cereals, yoghurt, big bowl of fruit, meat, tomatoes, boiled eggs, delicious rolls, croissants. Ok there is a steep hill but only takes 10 minutes to go to main centre. Taxi from church at bottom of hills 5 euros. Nice sitting area outside and also lounges. Very reasonably priced excellent coffee. TV is old in bedroom but never had it on, don't go on holiday to watch TV but perfectly big flat screen in lounge. In my view an excellent budget hotel.

Stayed 4 nights here. Room quite small but had what was needed and a great view over Funchal going down to the sea. There was some exterior noise from animals at night, so ear plugs would be advisorable if you are a light sleeper. Breakfast was better than expected considering the bargain price with good quality salami particularly appreciated. It was my birthday while staying there and the staff must have noticed this from my passport and when we returned at the end of the day they had left cake and flowers in our room which was very kind of them.

I had a nice clean room with a little shower bath . The people are very helpful and welcoming . Every day fresh towels . The breakfast was fantastic fresh bread rolls from the bakery around the corner , fresh fruits ect . Good value for the money and only 10 minutes to walk down to Funchal. I thank all of them for making my last holiday week special . If I come one day back to Madeira , I would stay anytime with you

Beautifully clean, great value hotel with friendly, helpful staff who are always on hand to help with anything you may need.
Good and plentiful continental breakfast with cereal, yoghurt, cold meats, boiled eggs, excellent selection of rolls, croissants and cake. Although small, our room was spotless , plenty of hot water in the shower area and good views over the mountains on one side and to the harbour area from the bathroom. Small tv in the room, which was old, but certainly adequate to catch up with the news.
The road to the hotel is fairly steep, but certainly manageable if you are fit, we are not youngsters and managed the walk every day without fail and sometimes twice. It is a 10 minute walk down to the old town area and probably 20 mins back.
There is a lovely terrace/seating area to the front of the hotel which is great on a nice warm evening to enjoy a drink, there is also a lounge area with Flatscreen tv and free wifi is also available.
Would certainly have no hesitation in returning.

First, the hill that the hotel is situated on is not a problem at all, unless you have mobility issues or carrying heavy load! P.S. take taxi if you arrive with luggages or rent a car. There isn't ample of on street parking around but we did not struggle to park over the seven days we have spent.
Because of it's location on the hill it is actually rewarding with views and tranquility, away from the old town noise. We were lucky to get top double room with balcony opening to Funchal and see view! Count it 10 - 15mins to go down to the old town and restaurants and 20-25min to come back by foot up the hill.
Staff - I was stunned of the warmth and welcome we got! It is actually the highlight of this hotel. The staff were truly excellent & helpful.
The room was clean, equiped with all you need except hairdryer. ..well TV didn't stream very well either but since we didn't come for TV it didn't bother.
One major disadvantage that we unfortunately got to know about thanks God only for the last few nights were thin and extremely not sound proof walls....so if you get overexcited neighbours or unpolite and unsensible with noise and time appreciation as we did - you may not sleep as well. Other than that the hotel is bargain!
Breakfast not a feast but certainly will keep you well stuffed till lunch and again to my surprise there were lots of fruits! (no eggs though for those who need them).
Other bonus was that the food store was just few minutes away down hill if you wanted to get water, wine or snacks for the evening.

So overall, better than expected!

We had booked this hotel on Booking.com. We were looking for an economical place to stay 6 nights. Madeira island is all on very steep terrain and the location of this hotel is very much uphill from town. They told us a taxi would cost abut 4 Euro. We choose to walk it. Part of it is so steep the sidewalk has steps.
The town is amazing as is the island that we saw with day tours.
The hotel facility is nice, the staff excellent. The room was small, but they have a nice sitting area with TV and refrigerator. Breakfast was basic, but included in the cost. The reception doubles as a bar. The cost to visit Portugal is very reasonable and especially now while the US dollar is strong.
I would recommend this hotel if you are on a budget and do not mind being on a hill.

Very nice and cozy hotel. We booked only one night at Residencial do Vale but then we liked it so much that spent there ten nights of our honeymoon! We had a nice view from our balcony to the city, ocean and harbor. The staff was very helpful and friendly. In our room we had an electric teakettle with free tea bags and sugar that was very convinient when it was hot. The breakfast was also very good on the terrace with a beautiful ocean panorama. It was possible to order meal from the nearest restaurant, the portions were very big tasty and by reasonable price. We definitely remained pleased by the hotel! Anna and Vladimir
